How to Change the Background Color in WordPress: Beginner’s Guide

The correct method depends on your active theme and the scope of the change. With a block theme, use Appearance > Editor > Styles > Colors > Background for the whole site, or select an individual block and change its Background setting. With a classic theme, look in Appearance > Customize for a theme-provided color control. Preview the result, save or publish it, and verify that text remains readable.

First, identify your theme and the scope

WordPress does not show identical design controls on every installation. Block themes use the Site Editor and global Styles; classic themes generally use the Customizer when the theme supports it. The theme also determines which blocks expose local background controls. See the official distinction between block themes and other themes before troubleshooting a missing menu.

What you want to change Theme or editor Where to look How it is saved
Entire site, including templates Block theme Appearance > Editor > Styles > Colors > Background Save in the Site Editor
One block or section Block theme or a block that supports the setting Select the block, then Settings or Styles > Background Save the page or template containing the block
Entire site or theme-defined areas Classic theme with Customizer support Appearance > Customize, then Colors or Background Color Click Publish

Change the whole site with a block theme

Global Styles are the documented route for a site-wide solid color or gradient. The Styles feature requires an active block theme and WordPress 5.9 or later, the minimum documented version for this workflow (WordPress Styles overview).

  1. Sign in to the WordPress dashboard.
  2. Open Appearance > Editor.
  3. Open Styles, then choose Colors.
  4. Under Elements, select Background.
  5. Choose a solid color or a gradient from the available palette or color picker.
  6. Review the preview, then click Save in the Site Editor.

Because this is a global style, it can affect posts, pages, and templates that use the theme’s inherited background setting. Check representative views in the preview before saving. The Site Editor documentation explains how saved style and template changes apply across a site.

Change the background of one block or section

Use a local block setting when the rest of the site should keep its current background. This is useful for a callout, hero area, group, column, paragraph, or other selected section.

  1. Open the page or template in the WordPress editor.
  2. Click the block whose background you want to change.
  3. Open the right-hand Settings sidebar and check the block’s Background control. In some blocks, it is under the Styles tab.
  4. Pick a color, then save or update the page, post, or template.

Not every block supports background colors, and available palettes differ by theme and block. A local block color does not replace the global background in Colors Settings; it applies only to the selected block and its content.

Change it with a classic theme’s Customizer

Classic themes do not use the block-theme Site Editor. If your active theme supports the Customizer, open Appearance > Customize and look for a section named Colors, Colors & Dark Mode, Background Color, or a similar theme-specific label. For example, the documented Twenty Twenty-One workflow places the control under Colors & Dark Mode (Customizer documentation).

  1. Go to Appearance > Customize.
  2. Open the color or background section supplied by your theme.
  3. Choose the background color and inspect the live preview.
  4. Click Publish to make the change public.

The Customizer is conditional: a theme can omit it or provide different controls. If you cannot find a background option, consult that theme’s documentation rather than trying to force the block-theme Styles path.

Color, gradient, or background image?

A solid color is the simplest background and is usually easiest to keep readable. The Styles Colors panel can also offer a gradient. Background settings may separately provide an image control for the site or a block; an image is an alternative design choice, not a requirement for changing a color. WordPress documents image-related options in its Background Settings overview.

Check readability before publishing

Preview light and dark text over the new color, including headings, links, buttons, navigation, and form fields. WordPress’s editor can warn when a selected text/background combination may be difficult to read (Colors Settings overview). If the warning appears, choose a color with stronger contrast or change the text color as well. Also inspect a post, a page, and any template that uses a different layout; a global style can appear in more places than the page currently open.

If the background option is missing

  • You are using a classic theme: check Appearance > Customize and the theme’s own documentation.
  • You are using a block theme but cannot open Editor: confirm that the active theme is actually a block theme and that WordPress meets the documented 5.9-or-later requirement for Styles.
  • The block has no Background control: that block or the theme may not support the setting. Try a containing Group or Cover block, or use the global style where appropriate.
  • The color appears in the editor but not on the front end: save the Site Editor or click Publish in the Customizer, then clear any caching layer and reload the page.
  • Only some pages change: inspect whether those pages use different templates or block-level overrides; a local setting can take precedence over an inherited global style.

Which method should you use?

Choose the smallest scope that matches your goal. Use global Styles when the same background should be inherited throughout a block-theme site. Use a block’s own setting when one section needs emphasis without changing other pages. Use the Customizer when a classic theme exposes the control there. In every case, preview the affected layouts and save through the interface that made the change.
