WooCommerce does not provide native weight-band pricing in its core Flat Rate method. To charge by weight, first configure shipping zones and accurate product weights, then install a weight-focused extension for the calculation you need. Core Flat Rate remains suitable for fixed per-order, per-item or shipping-class charges.
How WooCommerce decides which shipping rate a shopper sees
WooCommerce evaluates the customer’s shipping address against your shipping zones. A shopper is matched to one zone, and only the methods enabled in that zone are offered at checkout. Set up destinations before building weight rules so the same weight can receive different prices in different regions.
Create or edit a shipping zone
- Open WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping > Shipping zones.
- Add a zone or select an existing zone.
- Define the region, and use postal-code restrictions when the zone needs them.
- Choose Add shipping method, then configure the method that will contain your weight rule.
Repeat the method setup for every zone that needs its own rates. Zone matching is geographic; it does not calculate a fee by itself.
Enter the weight data WooCommerce will use
A weight rule can only be as accurate as the product data behind it. Set the store’s measurement units before entering values, then add each item’s weight in the product editor.

- Smart Tare & Hold Functions: Effortlessly subtract container weight or lock readings for larger boxes.
- Clear LCD Display: Large, backlit screen makes weights easy to read, even in dim rooms.
- Multi-measuring units: Kg, lb/oz, oz
Set the store’s units
Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Products and configure the store’s weight and dimension units. Use one consistent unit for your catalog and shipping rules.
Add a product weight
- Edit a shippable product in Products.
- Open the product’s Shipping tab in the Product data panel.
- Enter the product weight (and dimensions when your chosen method uses them).
- Update the product and repeat for every shippable item, including variations where they have different weights.
If an item’s weight is unknown, measure the packed item with a suitable scale. The scale is optional equipment; entering a reliable value in WooCommerce is the requirement.
What core WooCommerce can and cannot do
Core Flat Rate
In a zone, the built-in Flat Rate method can charge a standard amount per order, per item, or by shipping class. Its documented advanced formulas cover quantity and a percentage of order cost. The core documentation does not document native minimum-and-maximum weight bands for Flat Rate.
Shipping classes are categories, not rates
Shipping classes group products such as bulky and small items. A class does not create a checkout charge independently. A method such as Flat Rate must be configured to assign a cost to each class.

- 660 pound (300kg) capacity reads to 0.11 pound/50g/2 ounce in 0.1 ounce increments; minimum load weight is 6 ounces (150g)
- Measuring units in kg, ounces, and pounds
- Additional separated large back-lit LCD display allows for reading the weighing data from a distance of up to 2m
Other built-in methods
Core WooCommerce also includes Free shipping and Local pickup. These methods can be enabled in a zone, but they do not turn Flat Rate into a weight-range calculator.
Choose the right weight-based setup
| Requirement | Suitable starting point | Capabilities to verify |
|---|---|---|
| One predictable charge per order or item, or different charges by product class | Core Flat Rate | Per-order versus per-item calculation and shipping-class costs |
| Different fees for weight bands, optionally limited to selected products or classes | Weight Based Shipping extension | Minimum and maximum weight, fixed or per-unit fees, extra fixed cost, and rule scope |
| Show or hide an existing method when cart weight falls within a threshold | Simple Weight Based Shipping | Minimum and maximum cart weight, optional maximum item size, and defaults for missing data |
| Several rates using weight plus conditions such as item count, class or price | Table Rate Shipping extension | Multiple rows per zone and the combination of weight, quantity, class and price conditions |
These are documented capability distinctions, not a guarantee that any extension is universally best. Check the extension’s current compatibility and interface before installing it.
Configure weight-band prices with Weight Based Shipping
The official Weight Based Shipping extension is intended for rules that calculate a fee from cart weight. Its rule rows document a minimum weight, maximum weight, fee type, fee amount and an optional additional fixed cost.
Build a rule
- Install and activate the extension, then add its method to the target zone.
- Create a row for each weight interval, using the same unit configured in WooCommerce.
- Set the lower and upper weight boundaries so every intended cart falls into one clear interval.
- Choose a fixed fee or a fee per configured weight unit.
- Add an additional fixed amount when the rule needs a base handling charge.
- Limit the rule to particular products, categories, tags or shipping classes when required.
- Save the method and repeat the configuration in other zones whose prices differ.
When the extension is enabled on an existing shipping method, its documentation warns that the extension’s rules override that method’s standard cost. Disable the extension if you need to restore the original standard-cost behavior.

Prevent boundary mistakes
- Decide whether a boundary belongs to the lower or upper band and apply that convention consistently.
- Include a rule for the lightest possible shippable cart and one for the heaviest cart you accept.
- Decide what should happen when a cart exceeds the highest band: add another band, offer a separate method, or block checkout according to your business policy.
Use Simple Weight Based Shipping for eligibility thresholds
Simple Weight Based Shipping is suited to a different problem: making an existing shipping method available only when total cart weight is within a specified range. It also documents an optional maximum item-size condition.
Use it when the price is already supplied by another method and weight should control visibility. Configure the minimum and maximum cart weights, add the item-size limit if needed, and set the extension’s default weight and dimension values for products that lack data. This approach is not the same as creating a separate price for every weight band.
Use Table Rate Shipping for several conditions
Table Rate Shipping fits stores that need a rate table with multiple conditions in a zone. Its documented criteria include product weight, item count, shipping class and price. Create a row for each combination your carrier or business policy requires, then verify how the extension handles carts that match more than one row.
Choose this route when a single weight threshold is not enough—for example, when a heavy order and a low-value order need different treatment, or when bulky classes must be priced separately.

Test before publishing
Rate configuration should be checked in the store itself; documented features do not establish that a particular installation, theme or checkout behaves correctly. Test representative carts in each zone before making the methods public.
Minimum test matrix
- A cart just below, exactly at and just above every weight boundary.
- A cart containing one product and a cart containing multiple products whose combined weight crosses a boundary.
- Products with different shipping classes, where class-specific rules are used.
- Each destination zone, including postal-code edge cases.
- A product or variation with missing weight data, if your catalog contains one.
- A cart heavier than the highest configured band and a cart with no shippable items.
Confirm the displayed method name, fee, tax treatment and order total at checkout. Also verify that an extension has not silently replaced a standard Flat Rate cost.
Troubleshoot common problems
No weight-based method appears
- Check that the customer address actually matches the zone where the method is enabled.
- Confirm the method is active in that zone and that the product is marked as shippable.
- Check the product and variation Shipping tabs for a weight value and the store’s selected unit.
The wrong band is selected
- Recheck the cart total, including every item and quantity.
- Inspect adjacent minimum and maximum values for overlap or a gap.
- Make sure the extension and product use the same weight unit.
The expected Flat Rate amount changed
Review whether Weight Based Shipping is enabled on that existing method. Its documented behavior is to override the method’s standard cost while active.
Some products calculate as zero or use a fallback
Find products or variations without weight data. Enter measured values, or configure the fallback weight and dimension defaults provided by an extension that supports them.
Practical decision rule
- Use core Flat Rate when the charge is per order, per item or shipping class.
- Use Weight Based Shipping when the amount itself changes across weight ranges.
- Use Simple Weight Based Shipping when weight only controls whether an existing method is shown.
- Use Table Rate Shipping when several conditions and multiple rate rows must be evaluated together.
Whichever option you choose, zones determine availability, product records supply the weights, and your own carrier costs determine the actual amounts and boundaries. WooCommerce administration labels, extension features and compatibility may change, so review the current documentation for your installed versions (accessed September 30, 2026).
