How do I show popular products on a WooCommerce product page?
WooCommerce has a built-in Best Sellers collection for products purchased most on your site. To add it, edit the page or product template where you want the collection, insert a Product Collection block, choose the Best Sellers recipe, and adjust the block’s display settings. WooCommerce documents that the block can be added to any page or template.
- Open the page or template you want to edit.
- Add a Product Collection block.
- Select the Best Sellers recipe.
- Adjust the block’s display settings and save or update the page or template.
If you want to choose every item yourself rather than rank products by site purchases, choose the block’s Hand-Picked Products recipe. This is useful when you want a deliberate selection—for example, a seasonal edit—rather than an automatically generated best-seller list. See WooCommerce’s Product Collection block documentation.
How do related products, upsells, and cross-sells differ?
These WooCommerce features are not interchangeable. Related products are generated from shared categories or tags; upsells are alternatives you assign to an individual product; cross-sells are complementary items associated with a product and typically presented in the cart. None should be assumed to mean “best sellers.”

How do I choose which products appear?
Assign upsells to a specific product
- Go to WooCommerce → Products and edit the product that should have recommendations.
- Find Linked Products.
- Search for and select products in the Upsells field.
- Update the product.
The block-based product editor provides similar Linked Products controls in its editing sidebar. Upsells are manually chosen alternatives, not a site-wide popularity ranking. Theme support affects whether and where they appear on the product page. WooCommerce explains the linked-product options in its Related Products, Up-Sells and Cross-Sells guide.
Shape the related-products pool
WooCommerce generates related products from categories or tags shared with the current product; you cannot pick related products one by one in the product editor. To influence which products qualify, review the product’s categories and tags and those of the items you want to appear. WooCommerce says: “Related products are automatically generated by WooCommerce based on shared tags or categories with the currently viewed product.” Their output is sorted randomly, so taxonomy determines the candidate relationship, not a hand-set ranking.

Whether related products appear on a single-product page depends on the active theme. If the section is missing, check the theme’s product-page layout and support before changing product tags or installing an extension.

The documented attributes are limit, columns, and orderby. The shortcode still uses shared categories or tags to determine related products; it does not create a best-seller ranking. limit caps the displayed items but does not add pagination. WooCommerce documents the shortcode and its options in its related-products shortcode reference.

When is a recommendation extension worth considering?
WooCommerce Product Recommendations is a paid extension for rule-based recommendations, placements across a store, and analytics. Its documented strategies include frequently bought together, category-based recommendations, and trending or best-selling recommendations. WooCommerce warns that Recommendation Engines may not work as expected with an active block theme, so verify the theme setup before relying on this route.
The WooCommerce listing accessed on September 30, 2026, states a minimum of WordPress 6.8 and WooCommerce 10.6, tested with WordPress 7.0 and WooCommerce 11.0, and a one-year plan priced at $99. These are time-sensitive listing details; check the current Product Recommendations listing for updated requirements and pricing. The extension is not necessary for the built-in Best Sellers block, hand-picked collections, related products, or manually assigned upsells.
Which method should you use?
- Show what sells most across the store: use the Product Collection block’s Best Sellers recipe.
- Control the exact products in a showcase: use Hand-Picked Products or assign product-specific upsells.
- Show items related to the current product with core WooCommerce: use related products and manage the relevant categories and tags; confirm the theme displays them.
- Control a compact related-products display: use the shortcode, remembering that it does not paginate or rank best sellers.
- Set conditional rules and review recommendation analytics: consider the paid extension, taking the block-theme compatibility warning into account.
WooCommerce’s documentation does not establish a conversion or average-order-value lift for these methods. Choose based on the selection logic and placement you need, rather than assuming a recommendation section will produce a particular sales result.
