A web app icon generator turns one square logo or image into the different icon files a website needs for browser tabs, bookmarks, progressive web app (PWA) installs, and mobile home screens. Choose a generator that gives you control over the icon sizes and formats you need, creates a web app manifest when appropriate, and produces separate favicon, Apple-touch, and maskable assets if your project needs them. Then inspect the generated files and test them in the browsers and devices you support.
What a web app icon generator does
A generator takes source artwork and exports resized versions for browser and operating-system interfaces. Depending on the tool, it may also package the files, create a manifest.json or .webmanifest, and provide the HTML needed to connect those assets to your site.
“App icon” can mean several things. A favicon is the small icon associated with a website in browser tabs and bookmarks. A PWA icon is declared in the web app manifest and used in installation and app-launch contexts. Apple-touch icons and maskable icons serve additional platform-specific purposes. A single logo can be the source for all of these, but one output file does not necessarily replace every other asset. MDN distinguishes PWA app icons from favicons: MDN: Web app manifest icons.
What size should a PWA icon be?
For Chromium-oriented PWA installs, Google web.dev recommends providing icons at least 192×192 and 512×512 pixels. Include both in the manifest rather than relying on a tiny favicon to scale up. A larger source image can help a generator create smaller versions, but check the actual exported files: upscaling a small or blurry source does not add detail.

Other browser and app contexts use other sizes. Chrome’s icon guidance gives 16×16, 48×48, and 128×128 examples for extension and app contexts, and recommends square PNG icons when transparency is needed. Choose a generator by the files it actually delivers
Before uploading artwork, check the output list against your site’s requirements. Generators differ: some focus on favicon files, while others create manifest entries, mobile assets, or platform-specific variants. A tool’s advertised “full icon set” is not a guarantee that it includes every file your project needs.

- Favicon: Look for the favicon format and pixel sizes your site intends to link. ICO may bundle multiple size layers; PNG files are useful when you want explicit individual assets.
- PWA icons: Confirm the export includes at least 192×192 and 512×512 icons for Chromium-oriented installs, plus manifest entries pointing to the correct paths.
- Apple-touch icon: Include this if your target workflow calls for a dedicated icon for Apple home-screen use. Do not assume a manifest icon automatically covers it.
- Maskable icon: Check that the generator can create a maskable variant and that the artwork leaves enough safe padding to survive the shapes an operating system may apply.
- Manifest and HTML: Prefer output that shows the actual manifest icon array and the manifest link for your HTML, so you can verify and adapt them.
- Format and control: See whether you can choose output formats and inspect exact dimensions, rather than receiving an opaque archive with unclear filenames.
- Privacy and preview: Check whether processing happens in the browser or requires an upload, and whether the tool lets you preview how transparent backgrounds or icon masks affect the artwork.
Examples illustrate the range, not an endorsement or a guarantee of current availability. MagicBell’s browser tool describes accepting PNG, JPG, WebP, or SVG and generating an icon set and manifest.json. Websifu advertises favicon.ico and PNG sizes, Apple-touch and Android/PWA icons, maskable icons, Microsoft tiles, manifest files, and an HTML snippet. PWAicos describes a layered favicon, PNG icons, and a manifest icon array. Firebase’s App Manifest Generator describes using app metadata and a 512×512 image to generate remaining sizes and a ZIP. Compare the current output of any tool you choose with your own browser and deployment requirements.
How to generate favicon and manifest icons
- Prepare a square source image. Use a clean, high-resolution version of the logo or symbol, centered on a square canvas. Keep important details away from the outer edge: small icons lose fine detail, and maskable icons may be cropped to different shapes. If the design needs a background, include one deliberately rather than assuming every platform will display transparency the same way.
- Choose a generator and inspect its input requirements. Confirm that its accepted input format supports your artwork, and determine whether it processes the image locally or uploads it. If you need SVG output or a particular favicon format, check that before starting.
- Generate the assets you need. Select favicon files for browser contexts and PWA icons including 192×192 and 512×512 for Chromium-oriented installs. Add Apple-touch and maskable variants when relevant to your supported platforms. Download the generated files and note their filenames and directory paths.
- Review the manifest. The web app manifest has an
iconsarray. Each entry identifies an image with fields such assrc,sizes,type, andpurpose. Make sure everysrcpoints to a file that will exist at that path after deployment, and that the declared sizes and formats match the files. - Link the manifest from your HTML. Add a
<link rel="manifest">reference in the document’s head, using the deployed path to your manifest. Add separate favicon or touch-icon links if your site’s needs call for them; the manifest link alone does not make a favicon file appear in every browser context. - Deploy and test the real paths. Open the deployed icon files and manifest directly, inspect the browser’s loaded resources, and test installation or home-screen behavior on the target browsers and devices. A generator’s preview cannot confirm that your server paths, caching, or browser behavior are correct.
Check the manifest fields
A raster manifest icon should state its usable dimensions. SVG can use sizes: "any" when appropriate. A maskable version should be identified with the manifest purpose, for example "purpose": "any maskable"; use the appropriate purpose value for each icon. MDN documents the manifest icon fields. Keep separate entries when the files or purposes differ, and avoid claiming a raster image has sizes it does not have.

Mind transparent backgrounds and safe areas
Transparency is not guaranteed to look identical across operating systems. web.dev notes that some platforms can apply an operating-system-controlled background to transparent icons. Preview the result on the platforms you care about, especially if the logo relies on a transparent edge or a particular background color. For maskable artwork, preserve padding around the essential mark so a platform’s icon shape does not cut it off.
Can one logo make every app icon?
Usually, one suitable square logo can serve as the source artwork for a family of outputs. That does not mean every output should be the same file at every size. A detailed logo may become illegible at favicon scale, while a mark designed for a browser tab may look too sparse as a large installed-app icon. Some projects need a simplified small-size variant or a deliberate background for particular platforms.

Use the generated set as a starting point, not proof that one image works everywhere. Check the favicon at its actual small dimensions, inspect the PWA icons at their exported sizes, and verify the maskable crop. If a generator produces files but not a manifest, add and validate the manifest separately. If it produces a manifest but not a favicon link, connect the favicon separately.

- Open each referenced URL and confirm it returns the intended image rather than a missing-file page or an HTML error response.
- Check that manifest
src,sizes, andtypevalues correspond to deployed files. - Verify that the HTML points to the deployed manifest path.
- Inspect transparent icons against the backgrounds and shapes used by the platforms you support.
- Check the maskable variant with its safe area in mind; the central mark should remain recognizable after cropping.
- Test the result in the target browsers and, where applicable, through an actual PWA installation or home-screen workflow.
If the browser continues to show an older icon, first confirm that the updated file is deployed at the referenced URL. Then account for browser or device caching and retest after the updated resources are available. A successful generator download does not establish that the deployed site is serving the new files.
