How to Edit a Cookie Consent Banner (Cookiebot, HubSpot, Wix and Custom Code)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To edit a cookie consent banner, first identify the consent-management platform (CMP), plugin, site builder or custom component that renders it. Edit the existing banner in that system, then preview, save or publish, and test the live accept, reject and settings flows. The wording and controls must match the choices your implementation actually provides.

There is no universal dashboard path. The instructions below cover documented routes for Cookiebot and HubSpot, a limited Wix API pointer, and a code-based approach using the GOV.UK Design System.

1. Find what controls the banner

Do not start by creating a second banner. First determine which system currently displays the notice.

  • CMP dashboard: Cookiebot, OneTrust, Usercentrics and similar services usually inject the banner from an account-level configuration.
  • Marketing or analytics platform: HubSpot can manage its own consent banner and category controls.
  • Site builder or plugin: Wix and CMS plugins may expose settings in the site administration area or through an API.
  • Custom implementation: The banner may be an HTML, CSS and JavaScript component maintained in your repository.

Useful clues include the script URL in the page source, a vendor name in browser developer tools, and the location where the banner’s JavaScript is loaded. If you cannot identify the owner, ask whoever installed analytics, advertising or privacy tooling; editing unrelated page HTML will not change a banner injected later by a CMP.

2. Decide exactly what should change

Write down the intended change before opening the editor. Typical editable elements are:

  • the explanatory message and legally required disclosures;
  • links to a Privacy Policy, Cookie Declaration or preference center;
  • button labels such as “Accept all,” “Reject non-essential” and “Cookie settings”;
  • descriptions for analytics, advertising, functional and other consent categories;
  • confirmation messages shown after a visitor accepts or rejects; and
  • supported colors, spacing, typography, position and other visual styling.

Do not promise an option that the interface does not implement. For example, if visitors only see one “Accept” button, changing the text to imply granular rejection is misleading. Where consent is category-based, every category description and the route for changing settings should agree with the actual scripts that will be enabled or blocked.

3. Edit an existing Cookiebot banner

Cookiebot Support says its existing template text can be customized in several ways. Its instructions were updated March 26, 2026. The documented route is:

  1. Sign in to Cookiebot Manager.
  2. Open Settings > Content.
  3. Click the text you want to change in the banner content editor.
  4. Use the formatting toolbar for bold, bullets or numbering. Use the HTML control when the editor supports the markup you need.
  5. Add or update links such as your Privacy Policy or Cookie Declaration. Verify that each link opens the intended document in the correct language.
  6. Use the preview control to check line wrapping, buttons and the appearance on a narrow viewport.
  7. Save with the checkmark in the blue sidebar.

After saving, open an incognito window or clear the site’s consent cookie and inspect the published page. Check both the first-visit banner and the preference view that appears after a visitor changes settings. A dashboard preview can differ from the script version cached by your site or CDN, so test the real domain as well.

Cookiebot checks before publishing

  • Every claim in the message matches the categories and vendors actually used.
  • Accept, reject and settings labels describe the resulting behavior.
  • Links are keyboard reachable and have understandable text.
  • The banner remains readable on mobile and at increased browser text size.
  • The saved version is associated with the correct domain or language configuration.

4. Edit a HubSpot consent banner

In HubSpot, open the consent-banner settings and select the name of the existing banner. Edit that banner instead of creating a new one unless you intentionally need a separate regional or language configuration.

When category-level opt-in or opt-out is enabled, review the default text for each category. Edit the category descriptions and the text of the cookie-settings button so visitors can understand and revisit their choices. Then save or publish using the controls shown by your HubSpot account and test the resulting banner on the live site.

HubSpot cautions that its settings are not a substitute for situation-specific legal advice; its Knowledge Base says your legal team is the best resource for compliance advice for your particular business circumstances. The technical editor cannot decide which legal basis, categories or retention disclosures apply to your organization.

HubSpot validation

  • Confirm the banner name you edited is the one assigned to the domain and region being tested.
  • Check each category’s default copy, not only the headline message.
  • Verify that the cookie-settings button opens the preference controls rather than a dead link.
  • Test accept-all, category selection and rejection in a fresh browser session.

5. Wix and other site-builder APIs

A Wix API reference search-result excerpt describes an endpoint for updating banner settings and displayed text. It also states that the API cannot change the list of consent types shown to visitors. Because the underlying Wix API page was not available for verification here, treat that as a limited pointer: consult the current Wix reference, authentication requirements, request schema and version before putting an API call into production.

The same principle applies to other builders and plugins. An API may let you change labels or messages while leaving consent categories, script blocking or layout outside its scope. Confirm which fields are writable, whether changes are published immediately, and whether the endpoint is tied to a specific site, locale or banner ID.

6. Edit a code-based banner safely

If your team owns the HTML, CSS and JavaScript, a component such as the GOV.UK Design System cookie banner provides configurable content, messages, actions and classes. Its examples show separate accept and reject outcomes and a persistent “change your cookie settings” route.

  1. Locate the banner template and the JavaScript that records consent and enables or blocks scripts.
  2. Change the message, action labels, category descriptions and settings route in the component configuration.
  3. Update confirmation messages so they accurately describe what happened after accept or reject.
  4. If you allow HTML in configurable options, sanitize supplied HTML as the GOV.UK documentation instructs. Do not insert administrator-entered markup directly into the DOM.
  5. Run your unit, integration and accessibility tests, then build and deploy the change.
  6. Clear the consent storage used by your site and exercise every path on the deployed domain.

Text alone does not implement consent. The code that sets cookies, loads tags and reopens preferences must enforce the choices represented by the banner. A visually correct banner that loads analytics before consent is still a behavioral failure.

Minimum custom-code test matrix

Scenario What to verify
First visit Non-essential scripts remain blocked until a valid choice is made.
Accept all The confirmation message appears and only the configured categories are enabled.
Reject non-essential Optional tags remain blocked and the rejection state is persisted.
Granular settings Each category can be selected independently when the UI offers that control.
Change settings later The persistent route reopens preferences and updates stored consent.
Keyboard and mobile Focus order, labels, contrast, wrapping and touch targets remain usable.

7. Preview, publish and inspect the live result

Previewing is necessary but not sufficient. Use a clean browser profile, private window or cleared consent storage, and test the URL visitors actually use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Load the page with JavaScript enabled and with common blockers disabled for the test.
  2. Record which banner buttons and categories appear.
  3. Choose accept, reject and a granular combination where available.
  4. Reload and confirm the selected state persists.
  5. Reopen “cookie settings” and change the choice.
  6. Inspect network requests or tag-manager previews to confirm optional resources follow the stored choice.
  7. Repeat on a small screen and at a slower connection, where delayed banners can otherwise hide or shift content.

Check translated versions and regional banners separately. A saved change may apply only to one banner, domain, language or consent mode. Vendor interfaces change over time, so use the current documentation for the platform you administer.

8. Troubleshooting common editing failures

The old text still appears

You may have edited a different banner, failed to publish, or be seeing cached JavaScript. Confirm the banner ID and domain, save or publish, purge the relevant CDN or site cache, and retest after clearing consent storage.

The editor strips my link or formatting

The platform may allow only a restricted subset of HTML. Use its toolbar or supported link control, and do not paste unsanitized markup. In custom code, sanitize HTML before rendering.

Buttons say “Reject,” but tags still load

This is an implementation problem, not a wording problem. Inspect the consent callback, tag-manager triggers and default script behavior. Ensure optional tags are blocked before a choice and disabled when consent is withdrawn.

The settings button does nothing

Check its target, click handler and consent-storage key. Test from a fresh session and after a prior choice; a route that works only on the first visit does not provide a persistent preference mechanism.

Wix API fields do not work

The available excerpt indicates that consent types cannot be changed through that API. Recheck the current Wix reference for endpoint version, writable fields, authentication and publication behavior before changing code.

The banner is unreadable on phones

Reduce unnecessary copy, test long translated strings, preserve visible focus, and check fixed positioning against browser UI. Never remove essential choices solely to make the banner smaller.

9. Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture the edited banner or verify the deployed page at scale, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Common parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.

For AI workflows, its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I edit a banner without changing its consent logic?

Yes, when the platform separates presentation from enforcement. Still test every choice afterward, because a label or category description that no longer matches the logic can mislead visitors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I remove the reject option to improve conversions?

Do not remove or rename choices without checking the requirements that apply to your organization and the consent model your site uses. The interface must describe the real available choices.

Why does a banner reappear after I edit it?

Changing content can invalidate or replace stored consent, and a cleared cookie or local-storage record will also trigger a first-visit state. Check the platform’s versioning and storage behavior.

The Bottom Line

Edit the banner in the CMP, builder, plugin or codebase that owns it; then verify the live wording, controls, persistence and script behavior after every publish.
