The right method depends on what you need to capture. An operating-system screenshot records the browser viewport—the pixels currently visible. A browser’s full-page tool captures the scrollable document, including content below the fold, as one image. Open the page, let it finish loading, then choose the scope you need: visible area, a selected region, an element, or the entire page.
Choose the capture you actually need

Full-page capture is not a universal guarantee for every site. Pages with an internally scrolling panel, content that appears only after interaction, or lazy-loaded resources may need special handling. Scroll through the page first when completeness matters.
Firefox: save the visible area or the full page
- Open the target page and wait for its content to load.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + S on macOS.
- Choose Save visible for the current viewport, or Save full page for the entire document.
- Confirm the preview and save the image.

Capture one element with Firefox Developer Tools
Open Developer Tools, inspect the element, and use the Inspector context menu’s screenshot command. For a full-page button in Developer Tools, open Settings, find Available Toolbox Buttons, and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page. Microsoft Edge: Web Capture
- Open the webpage in Edge and allow it to finish loading.
- Open Edge’s Web Capture feature.
- Select Capture full page for the entire webpage, or choose the section-capture option when you need only a region.
- Review the result and save or copy it.
Microsoft’s guide calls the full-document command Capture full page. The guide was published January 2, 2024, and Edge menus can move between builds, so use the current Web Capture entry if its location differs: Microsoft Edge Learning Center.
Google Chrome: full-size capture through Developer Tools
Chrome’s full-page workflow documented for this article comes from Google Chrome Help Community guidance rather than an official Chrome support procedure. Labels and key combinations can change with the DevTools layout.
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Open Developer Tools (for example, from Chrome’s More tools menu).
- Open the DevTools command menu.
- Choose Capture full size screenshot.
- Save the generated image.

When Chrome’s image is incomplete
- Refresh after dismissing overlays, then wait for images and fonts to appear.
- Scroll through the page once to trigger lazy-loaded sections.
- Check whether the page itself has an inner scroll container; a browser full-size command may follow the document rather than that panel.
- For a document with page breaks, use print-to-PDF instead of forcing a single tall image.
Safari: avoid assuming a universal full-page command
Current official instructions establishing a single Safari full-page webpage-screenshot workflow and its platform availability were not confirmed here. Do not rely on a supposedly universal shortcut. Check the current Safari or Apple Help documentation for your macOS or iOS version. If your goal is a shareable document rather than an image, use Safari’s verified print-to-PDF path and label the result as a PDF.
Use PDF when pagination matters
A PDF is a document alternative, not a screenshot image. Choose it when selectable text, page sizes, margins, page ranges, or printing matter more than preserving one continuous canvas. Chrome’s general documentation covers downloading and PDF handling at Download a file and Manage PDFs in Chrome. Exact print labels can differ among browsers, so verify the current dialog in the browser you use.
Make a full-page capture reliable
Prepare the page
- Navigate to the final URL and wait for network activity and visible loading indicators to settle.
- Close cookie notices, newsletter prompts, chat bubbles, and other overlays if they obscure content.
- Expand accordions or tabs whose contents must appear in the image.
- Scroll from top to bottom once when images load lazily.
Check the result
- Look for missing images, blank bands, duplicated sections, or a clipped fixed header.
- Confirm that the capture includes the bottom of the document, not merely the viewport.
- For evidence or bug reports, record the URL, browser, operating system, and capture date alongside the file.
Respect privacy and access controls
Do not capture passwords, private messages, payment details, or personal data unnecessarily. A screenshot does not bypass a login, paywall, robots policy, or access permission; capture only content you are authorized to view and share.

The capture contains only the visible viewport
You selected a visible or region mode. Reopen the browser’s screenshot control and choose Save full page, Capture full page, or Chrome’s Capture full size screenshot.

Images or sections are missing
Lazy loading or delayed JavaScript may not have run. Scroll through the page, wait for the section, expand required controls, and capture again. For automated work, use a selector wait, delay, or network-idle wait.
A popup covers the page
Dismiss it before a manual capture. In an automated capture, enable the cleanup options that remove consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets, or hide the offending selector.
The page times out or shows a bot check

The file is huge or hard to share
Capture only the needed element, set a viewport and retina scale appropriate to the use case, resize the output, or choose JPEG/WebP. Use PDF when recipients need pagination rather than one very tall bitmap.
Chrome or Edge labels do not match
Feature names and menu locations change between browser builds. Search the current Developer Tools command menu or Web Capture panel for the full-page wording instead of relying on an old shortcut.
