Hosting, ownership and technical responsibility
BuddyBoss: maximum WordPress control
BuddyBoss is a WordPress route rather than an all-inclusive hosted service. You select the host and remain responsible for WordPress core, theme and plugin updates, caching, security hardening, backups, email delivery and scaling. That work buys you database and code-level control, broad plugin choice and the ability to shape the member experience around your own site.
The $299 annual introductory Platform Pro license is therefore only one line in the budget. Hosting, paid plugins, development and maintenance can exceed the license cost, especially for a busy or highly customized community.
Circle and Mighty Networks: managed infrastructure
Hosted platforms remove server administration and most routine maintenance. You trade that convenience for dependence on the vendor’s roadmap, account rules, export tools and pricing. For a small team without WordPress operations expertise, that transfer of responsibility can be worth more than a lower nominal license price.

What each platform includes
BuddyBoss community and integrations
BuddyBoss lists unlimited members, administrators, moderators, groups and courses on Platform Pro. Its community feature set includes notifications, live messaging, uploads, profile types, directories, moderation, polls, reactions and scheduled posts. Course delivery is integration-led: the pricing page names LearnDash, MemberPress Courses, TutorLMS and LifterLMS, so you should budget for whichever LMS and membership components your design requires.
Circle’s hosted business stack
Circle’s Professional plan lists unlimited members, community, courses, live events, a website, member directory, profiles, reporting and analytics, payments, gamification and a custom domain. Business adds workflows, custom profile fields, API/MCP features, activity scores, branded email notifications and removal of Circle branding. Scale adds higher limits and AI features. Limits and inclusions can change, so confirm the live plan page before purchase.
Mighty Networks: verify the exact tier
Mighty Networks offers a hosted community model, but the current public plan matrix was not established from the available official result. Do not assume a feature, member limit, course allowance, transaction rate or app option based on an older comparison article. Request the current limits and a written fee schedule for your intended plan.
Total cost: subscription is only the starting point
Circle’s recurring and sales fees
Circle’s displayed prices are annual-billing figures in US dollars and exclude applicable taxes. Its published platform transaction fees are 2% on Professional, 1% on Business, 1% on Scale and 0.5% on Circle Plus. A paywall sale also incurs Stripe processing fees; the combined cost is not simply the Circle percentage. Stripe’s rate varies by payment method and region.

BuddyBoss’s full operating budget
For BuddyBoss, add WordPress hosting, domain and email services, backups, security and any LMS, membership, payment or automation plugins. Its cost calculator uses 1,000 members at $29 per month as a modeling baseline; that is an assumption for a three-year estimate, not a typical-community statistic or a quoted requirement.
Mighty Networks’ unresolved economics
Because current Mighty pricing and fee details are not confirmed, a responsible comparison must leave those cells open. Ask about subscription renewal price, payment transaction fees, member and space limits, migration charges and app costs before comparing totals with BuddyBoss or Circle.
Rank #3
Courses, memberships and payments
Use BuddyBoss when your learning system already lives in WordPress or needs a specialized LMS. This approach can deliver more control, but every integration introduces setup, compatibility and update work.
Circle is the more unified option when courses, events, community and paywalls should share one hosted administration area. Remember that its platform fee is charged in addition to Stripe’s processor fee.
Recommended Free Tools
With Mighty Networks, verify whether the exact course, membership and payment workflow you need is native to the proposed tier. Vendor-authored comparisons can describe positioning, but they are not a substitute for a current plan quote.
Rank #4
Automation, administration and integration depth
- Choose BuddyBoss when you need WordPress hooks, a broad plugin ecosystem or an LMS-specific workflow and have technical capacity.
- Choose Circle Business or above when workflows, custom fields, API/MCP access, activity scores and branded email notifications matter.
- Choose a hosted platform when reducing infrastructure work is more valuable than database-level ownership.
Define your critical automations before buying: enrollment after payment, role changes, event reminders, moderation queues, data export and identity synchronization. A feature checklist is safer than assuming two products’ “automation” labels mean the same thing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Branded mobile apps
Circle lists custom branded apps, customizable app screens and branded push notifications in its custom-priced Circle Plus tier. Do not assume an entry-level Circle subscription includes a standalone app. Circle’s own comparison material says branded iOS and Android apps require a custom pricing conversation.
BuddyBoss offers separate mobile-app plans. The returned plan display showed Lite at $79 per month billed yearly and Full at $179 per month billed yearly, with publishing and onboarding charges shown separately; recheck BuddyBoss’s mobile-app page because these figures are volatile. Lite excludes community profiles, groups or forums, messaging, activity feeds or posts and gamification; Full lists those community capabilities.
Best Value
- Used Book in Good Condition
Mighty Networks’ branded-app availability and pricing require a current quote; do not treat a competitor’s comparison page as definitive.
Migration and long-term ownership
- Inventory members, profiles, posts, groups, courses, orders, subscriptions, media and consent records.
- Ask each vendor what can be exported in usable formats, which relationships are preserved and what cannot be migrated.
- Map URLs, authentication, email sending, payment subscriptions and mobile-app identities before scheduling a cutover.
- Run a staged import with a representative member sample, then test login, enrollment, refunds, notifications and moderation.
- Keep the old system read-only until exports, redirects and legal retention requirements are verified.
WordPress generally offers more direct control over the underlying site, while hosted services make infrastructure simpler but place greater emphasis on the vendor’s export policy. Confirm the policy in writing for the specific plan you will use.
Which platform should you choose?
Pick BuddyBoss when…
- You already operate WordPress and can maintain its hosting stack.
- You need LearnDash, MemberPress Courses, TutorLMS, LifterLMS or other WordPress integrations.
- You value ownership and extensibility over turnkey administration.
- You can budget separately for hosting, plugins, development and a possible mobile app.
Pick Circle when…
- You want hosted community, courses, events, payments and analytics in one service.
- You prefer predictable administration to server maintenance.
- You need workflows, API/MCP features or advanced business controls on Business or Scale.
- You can model both Circle’s platform fee and Stripe processing cost.
Investigate Mighty Networks when…
- A hosted community experience is your priority.
- You are prepared to confirm current plan limits, payment fees and app terms directly.
- You will compare a written quote rather than relying on historical or competitor-authored tables.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal winner: BuddyBoss maximizes WordPress control, Circle minimizes infrastructure work while bundling business features, and Mighty Networks remains a viable hosted contender whose 2026 economics must be verified from its live pricing information.
