How to Create Thumbnail Images for Social Media Videos

Start with the platform and placement—not a universal thumbnail size. A YouTube standard-video thumbnail is a landscape custom image; a Short uses a vertical format and has a different upload workflow. Other short-form platforms may use a cover, a selected video frame, and a separate crop in the profile grid. Choose the destination first, design for its display, then preview the image where viewers will actually see it.

Choose the platform and placement first

“Thumbnail” can mean different things: a custom image attached to a YouTube video, a cover selected for a short-form video, or the frame and crop shown in a profile grid. Those surfaces may use different proportions. Before opening an editor, decide whether you are making a standard landscape video thumbnail, a vertical short’s cover, or a profile-grid image.

Do not assume one size works everywhere. The exact native cover controls and current requirements for Instagram Reels, TikTok, and Facebook are not established here. Check the platform’s current publishing interface and help guidance before relying on a precise size or crop. Adobe Express’s scheduler documentation, for example, lists a 9:16 (1080 × 1920) TikTok video format and says landscape is unsupported in that scheduler workflow; that describes the scheduler, not every rule in TikTok’s native app.

Use a clear visual idea that survives a small display

  1. Choose one promise or moment. The image should make the video’s subject immediately recognizable. Avoid trying to summarize every point in the video.
  2. Make the subject stand out. Use a recognizable face or object and clear separation from the background. Contrast, framing, and a simple composition help the subject read at a glance.
  3. Keep text short. Use only enough words to clarify the point. Small text and long phrases become difficult to read in a feed.
  4. Protect the edges. Keep important words, faces, and objects away from the outer edges. A placement may crop the image differently from the full-screen player.
  5. Preview at real display size. Shrink the design to roughly the size it will occupy in a feed or grid. If the main subject or message disappears, simplify it.

Set the canvas to the destination

YouTube standard videos

YouTube’s current Help guidance recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels at a 16:9 aspect ratio for standard video thumbnails. It lists JPG or PNG as accepted formats and a minimum width of 640 pixels. Canva’s 2022 size guide describes a 1280 × 720-pixel, 16:9 YouTube thumbnail design. Those are different recommendations from different sources: Canva’s template size is not YouTube’s current recommended resolution. If you are targeting YouTube, use YouTube’s current Help instructions as the upload reference.

YouTube Shorts

YouTube recommends a 2160 × 3840-pixel image at 9:16 for Shorts, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. Its workflow differs from standard videos: custom Shorts thumbnails are currently available to add only in YouTube Studio on a computer, and the account must be verified. Check the current Studio interface, since YouTube’s available controls can change.

YouTube also says vertical videos using a 16:9 custom thumbnail will be shown with an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom thumbnail remains in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms. This is why checking only the full-screen or watch view can miss how the cover appears elsewhere.

Instagram Reels profile grid

The University of Oregon University Communications guide describes an Instagram grid crop of 1080 × 1440 pixels, hiding 240 pixels at both the top and bottom. Treat this as institutional guidance rather than a guarantee of the current Instagram interface. Keep key content near the center and check the actual profile-grid preview before publishing.

Other short-form platforms

Do not infer a platform’s complete cover or thumbnail rules from a third-party scheduling tool. Adobe Express documentation covers its own scheduler’s media specifications, including the TikTok video format; it does not establish all native TikTok cover controls. Check the destination’s current app or publishing interface for its available cover selection, crop preview, file type, and limits.

Create and export the image

  1. Open an editor. Canva documents a YouTube thumbnail design type and JPEG and PNG downloads. It is one option, not a requirement; any editor that can create the required dimensions and export a supported file can work.
  2. Enter the destination dimensions. Select the platform and placement you chose, then set the canvas to the current dimensions published for that destination. For a YouTube standard video or Short, use the respective YouTube recommendations above.
  3. Build for the crop. Position the face, subject, and text inside a central safe area. On a vertical video, make sure important content works both in the full-height player and in any smaller preview or grid crop.
  4. Export as an image. YouTube’s standard-video guidance lists JPG and PNG. Check the destination’s current file type and upload-size limits before exporting; a file can have the right dimensions and still be too large.
  5. Inspect the exported file. Open it at full size and at a small preview size. Look for clipped text, poor contrast, compression artifacts, or an unintended crop.

Upload and verify the result

For a standard YouTube video

Upload the custom thumbnail through YouTube’s video publishing or editing interface. YouTube’s Help guidance lists a maximum thumbnail file size of 2 MB for mobile uploads and 50 MB for desktop uploads. These limits depend on the upload route, so check the current instructions for the device you are using.

For a YouTube Short

Use YouTube Studio on a computer to add a custom Shorts thumbnail, and make sure the account is verified. YouTube’s Help guidance states that custom Shorts thumbnails are currently limited to that workflow. After saving, inspect the Short in the places YouTube may display it; the crop can differ by surface.

For other platforms

Use the platform’s native publishing screen when it offers a cover or frame-selection control. Review the available preview before publishing, then open the post after publication to confirm how it appears in the player and profile grid. If the preview differs from the exported file, adjust the crop or reposition the subject rather than assuming the image failed to upload.

Troubleshoot common thumbnail problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
YouTube rejects the image or will not upload it The file exceeds the limit for the chosen device or route, or its format or dimensions do not meet current requirements. Check YouTube’s current upload guidance, confirm JPG or PNG for a standard thumbnail, and export within the stated file-size limit for mobile or desktop.
A Shorts custom thumbnail option is missing The workflow or account does not meet YouTube’s current conditions. Use YouTube Studio on a computer and confirm the account is verified; recheck YouTube’s current Help instructions if the control remains unavailable.
The image looks correct in the editor but cuts off in a feed or grid The platform is showing a crop or preview with a different aspect ratio. Move critical content toward the center, preview in the destination interface, and export a placement-specific variant if needed.
Text is hard to read on a phone There is too much copy, low contrast, or text that is too small. Shorten the wording, increase contrast and type size, and inspect the image at the size it will occupy in the feed.
The published thumbnail has not changed yet YouTube says thumbnail changes may take time to appear. Allow time for the update to propagate, then refresh or check the video again in the relevant view.
A thumbnail violates platform rules YouTube requires thumbnails to follow its Community Guidelines and describes possible rejection or enforcement for violations. Review the platform’s current guidelines and replace the image with one that complies.

Keep the workflow efficient and reliable

  • Make placement-specific versions. A landscape YouTube thumbnail and a vertical short cover serve different surfaces; resize and recompose rather than stretching one image.
  • Save an editable original. Keep the source design so you can update text, crop, or export settings without rebuilding the image.
  • Use a repeatable review checklist. Confirm the dimensions, file format, upload limit, crop, small-size readability, and post-publication appearance for each placement.
  • Recheck volatile details. Platform controls, limits, and previews can change. Use the current native interface and help page when preparing a new upload.

Or skip the browser setup

If your workflow also needs screenshots of web pages—for example, to capture a published page or a design reference—ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a thumbnail editor or a replacement for a platform’s cover controls. A single request can capture a URL as an image or PDF; the request below saves a PNG screenshot of a sample page:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request details. Before a capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. To try it, sign up for free.
