Which Windows 11 shortcut should you use?
The right method depends on whether you need a still image, a recording, or a screenshot from a game or app.

For a normal browser or desktop video, start with Snipping Tool. Game Bar is the more targeted choice when the content is a game or another app that supports the Xbox Game Bar capture workflow.
Capture a still frame with Snipping Tool
- Pause the video. Stop on the exact frame you want, if the player provides a pause control. Pausing prevents the image from changing while you select the capture area.
- Open the image overlay. Press Windows+Shift+S. Windows opens the Snipping Tool capture bar over the current screen.
- Choose a capture shape. Select Rectangular snip for a precise video crop. Use Window snip when the entire player window is the subject, Full-screen snip for all monitors as displayed, or Freeform snip when the area is irregular.
- Select the video. Drag around the picture, or click the window or screen according to the mode you selected. Include only the video area if you do not want browser controls, captions, or other page elements in the image.
- Open the result. The capture is copied to the Snipping Tool window automatically. Select the notification or open Snipping Tool from Start if you need to edit the result.
- Save or copy it. In Snipping Tool, use the Save as control to write the image to a file, or use Copy to place it on the clipboard for another application.
To launch the application without a shortcut, open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and select it. Choose the image mode rather than Record, then select New and draw the capture area.

Choose the capture mode that fits the video
Rectangular snip: the usual choice
Rectangular snip is normally the cleanest option for a video frame. Drag tightly around the player image and leave out the browser tab strip, address bar, playback controls, and unrelated windows. If the player has visible captions that are part of the frame you want to document, include them in the rectangle.
Window snip: capture the whole player
Window snip selects an application window in one step. It is useful when the video fills a dedicated player window and you want its complete visible frame, but it may also include the window border or controls.
Full-screen snip: capture everything shown
Full-screen snip records the complete desktop view as displayed. Use it when the context around the video matters, such as a demonstration that includes another application. Crop the saved image afterward if you only need the video.
Freeform snip: an irregular outline
Freeform snip lets you outline a non-rectangular region. It can isolate a player embedded in an unusual layout, although a rectangular crop is usually easier to share and edit.
How to screenshot a game or app with Xbox Game Bar
For a game or app, Microsoft documents Windows+Alt+Print Screen as the Xbox Game Bar screenshot shortcut. The resulting PNG is stored under Videos in the Captures folder.

- Bring the game or app containing the frame to the foreground.
- Pause the game or video if its controls allow it.
- Press Windows+Alt+Print Screen.
- Open File Explorer and go to Videos > Captures to find the PNG.
This method captures the app-oriented view rather than asking you to draw a rectangle. If you need a tightly cropped frame from a browser video, Snipping Tool is usually more convenient.
Do not confuse a still screenshot with a video snip
Windows+Shift+R opens Snipping Tool’s video-snipping flow. You select a screen area, start recording, and stop when the clip is complete. You can save that recording or open it in Clipchamp for editing. It does not create a single still frame from the paused video.
Use the image workflow when the deliverable is one PNG, JPEG, or other still image. Use Record when the deliverable is a sequence of on-screen actions. Starting the wrong mode is a common reason a user ends up with a clip instead of the frame they intended.

Get a cleaner frame before you capture
- Pause first. A paused frame is easier to select accurately than a moving one.
- Pick the smallest useful region. A tight rectangle avoids exposing unrelated tabs, messages, or desktop content.
- Wait for the intended frame to render. If the player is still changing quality or loading an image, give it time before selecting the area.
- Decide whether controls belong in the image. Hide the player controls when possible; otherwise select only the picture area.
- Check captions and overlays. Include them when they are part of the evidence you need, or wait for them to disappear when they are not.
- Save immediately when the image matters. The capture is placed in the Snipping Tool window and on the clipboard, so saving it gives you a durable file rather than relying on clipboard contents.
Protected and streaming video: an important limit
Windows documents how its capture controls work, but those instructions do not establish that every streaming service or protected playback window permits screen capture. A protected player may show a blank or blocked result even when the Snipping Tool shortcut works normally elsewhere. Do not assume that a method that works on an ordinary web page will work on every subscription service, DRM-protected title, or secure application.
If the captured area is blank or the service prevents capture, check that player’s help pages and terms. Use only a capture method the service permits. Windows’ shortcuts cannot override restrictions imposed by the playback software.

Troubleshoot a missing, wrong, or blank screenshot
The shortcut does nothing
Press the keys together again and verify that you are using Windows+Shift+S, not the video-recording shortcut. You can also open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and select it directly. If the application opens, use New in image mode.
You captured a recording instead of a picture
Windows+Shift+R is the video-snipping command. Close or stop that recording and repeat the process with Windows+Shift+S.

The saved image includes too much of the screen
Repeat the capture with Rectangular snip and drag a smaller area around the video. Window and full-screen modes intentionally include more context.
The frame is the wrong moment
Pause the player before opening the overlay. If the player does not pause, stop at the desired point and begin the snip immediately; a moving source can change between the moment you see it and the moment you select it.
The result is blank or blocked
First test Snipping Tool on an ordinary visible window. If that works but the video area is blank, the playback window or service may restrict capture. Consult its support documentation and terms rather than assuming Windows has failed.

You cannot find a Game Bar screenshot
Game Bar screenshots are saved as PNG files in VideosCaptures. Look there with File Explorer. If you intended a general desktop image instead, repeat the capture with Snipping Tool, whose result opens in its own window for saving.

Snipping Tool captures what Windows is displaying at the time of selection. It is therefore a practical way to document a visible frame, but it is not a way to extract the source video’s original frame data. The final image reflects the player size, display scaling, overlays, and any compression already present on screen.
For the sharpest practical result, enlarge the player before pausing, wait until the desired picture is fully visible, and select only the image area. Avoid repeatedly rescaling the saved file in an editor; every additional export can alter image quality. Keep the original capture and make resized copies for sites that impose their own dimensions.
Snipping Tool is suited to occasional, interactive captures. If you need a sequence of frames, a timed set of captures, or a repeatable workflow across many URLs, a browser or automation tool is a different class of solution. The built-in shortcuts do not provide a batch API or a schedule.

For one visible frame in Windows 11, pause the video, press Windows+Shift+S, choose a snip shape, select the video, and save it from Snipping Tool. Use Windows+Shift+R only when you need a recording, and use Windows+Alt+Print Screen for the documented Game Bar app screenshot workflow. Protected players may impose their own restrictions.
