Windows 10 offers three practical ways to capture a video screenshot. Press Windows + Alt + Print Screen for a fast shot of a supported video app, press Windows + Shift + S to select only the player or a frame-sized region, or use VLC’s Video > Snapshot when you need the clean frame from a local video file without window borders. The right method depends on whether you want the pixels displayed on your monitor or the actual frame stored in the video.
First decide: screen capture or video-frame extraction?
A display screenshot records what Windows is currently rendering: the player window, controls, subtitles, notifications and any scaling or color changes visible on your monitor. A player snapshot extracts the paused frame from the video itself, so it can omit browser chrome and player overlays.

Protected streaming services can intentionally produce a black image or disable capture. Capture and share only what the service and applicable copyright terms permit.
Method 1: Xbox Game Bar (fastest built-in screenshot)
Capture the focused video app
- Start playback and bring the video player window into focus.
- Press Windows + Alt + Print Screen.
- Windows saves a PNG in the Captures folder inside Videos (normally This PC > Videos > Captures).
You can use the interface instead: press Windows + G, open the Capture widget and select the camera icon. Xbox Wire describes this as the quick screenshot action in Game Bar.

If the shortcut does nothing
- Press Windows + G first and confirm that Xbox Game Bar is enabled for the app.
- Click the player so it is the active window, then try the shortcut again.
- Game Bar is designed for games and apps. It may not capture the desktop, File Explorer or protected playback surfaces; that limitation follows from its app-focused scope.
- Check Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar and enable the Game Bar switch if it is off. The exact wording can vary by Windows 10 build.
When Game Bar is the wrong choice
Game Bar captures display pixels, not a source frame. You may see player controls, a browser tab strip, scaling artifacts or a black protected surface. Switch to the snipping shortcut for selection control or VLC for a local-file frame.
Method 2: Windows + Shift + S for part of the video
Select the player or an exact region
- Pause the video on the desired moment. Pausing prevents motion blur while you drag the selection.
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose a mode in the overlay: rectangular, freeform, window or full-screen.
- Drag around the video image, or choose the player window when the window mode is available.
- Select the notification that appears to open the result in Snip & Sketch or Snipping Tool, then copy or save it.
Windows 10 builds may label the app Snip & Sketch or Snipping Tool. The still-image shortcut is the relevant workflow for Windows 10. Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool documentation also lists Windows + Shift + R for video snips on supported newer Windows versions; do not assume that recording shortcut exists on every Windows 10 installation.
Improve the crop
- Maximize the player before invoking the overlay if you need a larger frame.
- Use rectangular mode for consistent dimensions across multiple captures.
- Include subtitles deliberately: crop below the image only when the text is part of what you are documenting.
- After saving, check the image at 100 percent zoom. A high-DPI display can make a crop look sharper or softer than its actual pixel dimensions.
Method 3: Extract an exact frame with VLC
Take a clean snapshot from a local video
- Open the video file in VLC Media Player.
- Pause at the required frame. Use VLC’s frame-advance controls when you need to move one frame at a time.
- Choose Video > Snapshot.
- Find the resulting PNG in VLC’s configured snapshot directory, normally the Pictures folder in the default Windows setup.
VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop User Documentation (version 3.0) explains that VLC can take a snapshot of a video you are watching. The default keyboard shortcut can vary by VLC build or customization, so the menu command is the dependable path.

Change VLC’s folder or image format
Open VLC preferences and locate the video snapshot settings. You can change the destination directory and format there; PNG is the default. If you are creating a sequence of frames, set a predictable folder and use a naming pattern that preserves ordering.
Why VLC usually looks better
A VLC snapshot is taken from the decoded video frame rather than from the whole Windows desktop. It avoids borders, browser controls and accidental pointer capture. It does not bypass digital-rights controls, and it cannot extract a frame from a stream that VLC cannot access.

Common problems and fixes
The image is black
Protected playback can block display capture. Test with a permitted local file or an unprotected clip. Do not attempt to defeat a service’s capture controls; use an export or still-image feature supplied by the service when available.

The screenshot includes controls or browser chrome
Use Windows + Shift + S and draw a tighter rectangle, or use VLC Snapshot for a local file. Pause first so controls do not appear or disappear during the capture.
The saved file is hard to find
For Game Bar, check Videos > Captures. For VLC, inspect the snapshot directory in VLC preferences. Snipping results are held in the notification workflow until you save or copy them, so look in the folder you selected in the save dialog.
The frame is blurry
Pausing a moving video can leave a motion-blurred source frame; a screen crop can also be softened by display scaling. Use VLC frame advance to select a different source frame, and save at the original dimensions rather than enlarging the image.

VLC saves the wrong format or folder
Open VLC preferences, review the video snapshot directory and format, save the change, then capture again. Existing snapshots are not moved automatically.
The shortcut conflicts with another program
Close overlays and utilities that register global hotkeys, then retry. If the conflict remains, use the Game Bar camera button, the Snipping overlay, or VLC’s menu command instead of a keyboard shortcut.
Performance, quality and file-management tips
- Pause before capture: this avoids tearing and motion blur.
- Match the output to the job: PNG is useful for text and interface detail; a lossy image can be smaller for casual sharing.
- Keep a consistent frame size: use the same player size or a fixed snipping rectangle for documentation.
- Verify color and subtitles: HDR, night modes and subtitle rendering can make a display screenshot differ from the source frame.
- Respect storage: repeated full-screen PNGs consume more space than tightly cropped images; move or rename captures in batches.
