On Windows, open Snagit Capture, click the Global Capture hotkey field, press the Print Screen key, choose the Image capture settings you want, and press Print Screen again to start a capture. On Mac, Snagit’s documented default global shortcut is Control+Shift+C, not Print Screen. If Windows opens Snipping Tool or another application instead, disable or override that competing shortcut before testing again.
Set Print Screen as Snagit’s capture key on Windows
These steps follow TechSmith’s Windows workflow for capturing directly to an image, updated April 25, 2025.
- Open the Snagit Capture window. This is the small control window with the red Capture button, not the editor window.
- Find the Global Capture hotkey field below the red Capture button.
- Click inside that field and press the physical Print Screen key on your keyboard. Snagit should display the key combination in the field.
- Select the Image tab.
- Choose the capture options you want under Selection, Effects, and Share. For example, Selection determines what part of the screen you draw around, Effects controls additions such as borders or shadows, and Share determines where the result is sent.
- Press Print Screen. Snagit starts a capture using the settings currently selected in the Capture window.
If pressing the key opens Snagit’s crosshair or selection interface, drag over the area you need and complete the capture. The exact prompts after the hotkey depend on the Selection mode you selected.
Global hotkey versus a preset hotkey
The global shortcut and a preset shortcut do different jobs. TechSmith explains in Capture Modes in Snagit Windows, updated August 23, 2024, that “The global capture hotkey, Print Screen, starts a capture with the currently selected settings in the Capture window.” In other words, changing the Image tab settings changes what the Print Screen key does.

A shortcut assigned to a preset launches that preset’s saved settings instead. Use a preset when you need a repeatable workflow—for example, a fixed region, a particular output destination, or a consistent effect—without changing the global settings first. If you expected Print Screen to open one specific preset but it uses the settings visible in Capture, check which kind of shortcut you assigned.
What Snagit’s documented defaults are on each platform
TechSmith’s Snagit Hotkeys Guide for version 2025 states that the default global capture hotkey is Print Screen on Windows and Control+Shift+C on Mac. Do not assume that a Print Screen key will be the default on macOS. Previous Snagit versions can have different labels or behavior, so follow the controls displayed by your installed version if they differ from the guide.
Using a Windows keyboard with Snagit on Mac
If you connect a Windows-style keyboard to a Mac, the key may be labeled Print Screen, PrtSc, or something similar, but Snagit still uses the shortcut configured in its Mac settings. Assign a combination that your keyboard and macOS recognize rather than relying on the Windows default. The Mac path for changing it is described below.
Change or restore the Snagit shortcut
Windows: Capture Preferences
- Open Snagit Capture.
- Open File > Capture Preferences > Hotkeys.
- Click the shortcut field for the global capture or for a preset.
- Press the new key combination.
- Save or close the preferences window, then test the shortcut in another application.
You can also click the shortcut field directly in the Capture window and press the desired combination. The Hotkeys preferences are useful when you need to review several assignments or enable Snagit’s override option.

Mac: Snagit settings
- Open Snagit.
- Choose Snagit > Settings > Keyboard.
- Click the shortcut you want to change and press the new combination.
- Close Settings. TechSmith says Mac shortcuts are saved automatically.
The 2025 guide also documents restoring defaults on both platforms. If your version shows different control names, use the hotkey controls it provides rather than copying an older menu path exactly.
Why Print Screen opens Snipping Tool instead of Snagit
Windows 11 can reserve Print Screen for Snipping Tool. TechSmith’s Snagit Print Screen Hotkey Not Working article, updated February 26, 2026, gives this fix:
Rank #2
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard in Windows.
- Find Use the Print screen key to open Snipping Tool.
- Turn that setting off.
- Restart Windows, then test Print Screen in Snagit again.
TechSmith says this issue was addressed in Snagit 2023.2.1. If you use an earlier Snagit 2023 release, the Windows setting workaround is especially relevant; updating Snagit may also change the behavior.
When another application owns Print Screen
OneDrive and Dropbox are common programs that register Print Screen themselves. Snagit may offer to override the competing assignment. You can also open File > Capture Preferences > Hotkeys and enable Allow Snagit to override other hotkey assignments, as described in TechSmith’s Hotkey Problems and Questions in Snagit article, updated April 15, 2025.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse the override option only when you want Snagit to own that key. If your organization requires OneDrive or Dropbox to keep the shortcut, leave their assignment in place and give Snagit a different combination instead. After changing ownership, restart the conflicting application or Windows if the old registration remains active.
Logitech keyboard: check Logi Options+
On Logitech keyboards, Logi Options+ can assign an action to Print Screen before Snagit receives it. TechSmith’s current troubleshooting instructions recommend opening Logi Options+, checking the keyboard’s Print Screen assignment, and choosing its Print Screen action. Then test Snagit’s global shortcut again. If Logi Options+ continues to intercept the key, assign Snagit another combination in Capture Preferences.
Laptop keyboards and the Fn key
Many laptops share Print Screen with another key. TechSmith notes that you may need to hold Fn while pressing Print Screen. On devices with function lock, TechSmith suggests trying Fn+Esc to change the function-lock state, then testing Print Screen again. This is device-dependent, not a universal sequence: some manufacturers use a different Fn-lock control or place Print Screen on another key.
If the laptop has no dedicated Print Screen label, use the key combination printed on the keyboard or connect an external keyboard temporarily. An external keyboard is not required for most users; it is simply a way to determine whether the laptop’s hardware layer is intercepting the key.

A systematic test when “Snagit Print Screen Hotkey Not Working”
- Open Snagit Capture and confirm that the Global Capture field actually shows Print Screen (or your replacement shortcut).
- Confirm the Image tab is selected and that a valid Selection mode is configured.
- Press the key once in a simple application such as a text editor. If another program reacts, identify that program before changing Snagit.
- Check Windows Accessibility > Keyboard for the Snipping Tool setting.
- Check OneDrive, Dropbox, Logitech Options+, and any keyboard utility for a Print Screen assignment.
- If the keyboard requires Fn, try the laptop’s documented Fn combination and check function lock.
- Return to Snagit’s Hotkeys settings and choose a different, unused combination if the conflict cannot be removed.
- Restart the application that owned the old shortcut, or restart Windows, and test again.
Do not judge the shortcut by the destination alone. A global hotkey starts capture with the current Capture-window settings; the resulting image may go to the editor, a file, the clipboard, or another Share destination depending on what you selected.
Choose settings before pressing Print Screen
Print Screen is only the trigger. The Image tab determines the capture’s behavior:
- Selection: choose the region or selection method you need before pressing the key.
- Effects: enable only the visual effects you want in the output.
- Share: select the destination that should receive the image after capture.
If you need different combinations regularly, keep the global shortcut for your everyday capture and assign separate hotkeys to presets. That avoids repeatedly changing the global settings and makes each key’s result predictable.
Or skip the browser setup
Snagit captures the screen you are using locally. If what you need is an automated screenshot of a public or authenticated webpage, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It is useful when a script or AI agent should fetch a URL rather than drive a desktop browser. Cookie and consent banners are accepted before capture, and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Make a GET request to the API endpoint shown in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The URL below is only an example; replace it with the page you are allowed to capture.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The service can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its 63 options include full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size and margins, page ranges and landscape mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work to ease migration.
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Every feature is included on every plan. The current plan prices are:
