It can mean a Safe Browsing warning, a notice in Search Console’s Security Issues report, a spam-policy Manual Action, or pages missing from Google’s index. Each has a different cause and recovery route, so identify the exact signal before attempting removal.
What people mean by a “Google blacklist”
A site can be warned about because it may harm visitors, demoted for violating Google’s spam policies, or simply absent from search results. Those outcomes are not interchangeable: a malware warning does not by itself prove a Manual Action, and pages missing from results do not prove that Google has blocked the whole site.
| Signal | What it indicates | Where to investigate | Typical next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safe Browsing warning or dangerous-site label | Google has identified behavior that may put visitors or their devices at risk, such as malware or phishing. | Google Safe Browsing site status and Search Console’s Security Issues report. | Clean and secure the site, then use the review route specified in the relevant report. |
| Security Issues report notice | Google has indications of a hack or potentially harmful behavior. Affected pages may trigger a warning in Search or a browser interstitial. | Search Console > Security Issues. | Address the listed security problem across the affected pages and request a review. |
| Manual Action | A human reviewer found that some or all of the site violates Google spam policies. Rankings can fall or pages can be omitted without a dangerous-site warning. | Search Console > Manual Actions. | Fix the cited violation and submit a reconsideration request in that report. |
| Pages absent from the index | Pages may be inaccessible, not yet indexed, removed, or affected by a quality or policy issue. Absence alone does not identify the cause. | Search Console indexing reports and URL Inspection; check for notices in the other reports too. | Diagnose indexing and accessibility first; a security or Manual Action review is not appropriate unless its report identifies that issue. |
Google describes the purpose of the Security Issues report this way: “The Security Issues report lists indications that your site was hacked, or behavior on your site that could potentially harm a visitor or their computer.” This wording appears in Google Search Console Help’s Manual actions report documentation.
What can trigger a warning, penalty, or removal
Hacked content and harmful behavior
Google defines hacked content as content placed on a site without permission because of security vulnerabilities. A compromise may be visible on the homepage, but it can also be confined to pages that look normal to the owner.
#1 Best Overall
- Code injection: malicious JavaScript or iframes added to existing pages.
- Page injection: new spam or malicious URLs, sometimes used for search manipulation or phishing.
- Content injection: hidden links or text added to existing pages, or more elaborate cloaking.
- Other harmful behavior: phishing, malware, or unwanted software behavior that could harm visitors.
A warning is not proof that the current owner deliberately caused the problem. Use the notice and affected URL examples to find what Google detected; a traffic drop or a warning phrase alone is not a diagnosis.
Spam-policy violations
Some visibility problems are not security incidents. Google says practices such as cloaking, hidden text intended to manipulate search engines, and pages or links created solely to fool search engines can lead to lower rankings or removal from the index. A Manual Action identifies a human-reviewed spam-policy issue; other indexing or ranking changes may not come with one.

How to check whether Google has flagged your site
- Verify your property in Google Search Console. Google recommends registering in advance so it can notify site owners and provide details when it finds problems. Select the correct property, including the relevant protocol and hostname.
- Open Security Issues. Record the issue category, example URLs, and remediation instructions. If there is no security notice, do not assume the site is clean or penalized; continue checking other reports and indexing signals.
- Open Manual Actions separately. Read any listed action and affected patterns. Security Issues and Manual Actions answer different questions, so check both after an unexplained loss of visibility.
- Check Safe Browsing status and test the site. Look for dangerous-site warnings or browser interstitials and consult Google’s Safe Browsing site status.
- Inspect suspicious URLs and search results. Search Google for
site:example.complus an unexpected spam term to look for injected pages. In Search Console, use URL Inspection to compare what Google can access with what a visitor sees.
A missing Security Issues or Manual Actions notice does not establish that Google has “blacklisted” the site. If pages are absent, investigate indexing and accessibility rather than inferring a cause from search traffic alone.
How to remove a warning or recover visibility
If Security Issues or Safe Browsing identifies a hack
- Preserve evidence and a clean backup. If possible, retain a backup from before cleanup and document the affected URLs and changes. Avoid overwriting the only useful evidence of how the compromise occurred.
- Remove the compromise throughout the site. Find and remove malicious pages, injected code, hidden content, and backdoors. Check files, databases, administrator accounts, and other locations relevant to the platform; a normal-looking homepage does not establish that every page is clean.
- Close the entry point. Investigate how the attacker gained access and correct the vulnerability before requesting review. Cleanup alone may not prevent reinfection if the original weakness remains.
- Harden access and software. For WordPress, Wordfence recommends updating WordPress and extensions, removing unused components, resetting affected passwords, reviewing accounts, enabling administrator two-factor authentication, and keeping tested backups.
- Request a review in Security Issues. After the site is clean, use the report’s Request a review flow. Explain what was removed and how the vulnerability was corrected; Google says its response appears in Search Console Messages after review.
Google’s timing depends on the pathway. It says malware reviews take a few days, while reviews for hacked spam can take several weeks. Separately, the Google Transparency Report Help Center says a clean Safe Browsing scan is typically followed by removal from the list within 24 hours. Google also cautions that changes can take a few days to propagate among Safe Browsing, Chrome, and Search Console. These are typical intervals, not a guarantee of when all warnings or ranking effects will disappear.

If Manual Actions identifies a spam-policy violation
- Expand the action and read its examples and linked policy. Identify every affected page and the pattern Google says violates its policy.
- Correct the full issue, not just a sample. Google says fixing only part of the problem does not earn a partial return to search results.
- Make corrected pages available for review. Login walls, robots.txt blocks, and
noindexdirectives can prevent Google from reviewing pages. - Submit a reconsideration request in Manual Actions. Do so only after fixes are complete. Explain what went wrong, the steps taken, and the result.
- Track the request in Search Console. Google says most reviews take several days or weeks; link-related cases can take longer. Do not submit another request while one is outstanding.
If pages are missing but neither report shows an issue
Check Search Console’s indexing and accessibility signals, then use URL Inspection on representative pages. Consider whether a quality-policy issue or a legal removal notice may apply. Google may recrawl and reevaluate some pages without a manual review request. The temporary Removals tool is not a way to repair a hack or reverse a Manual Action.

The right response depends on the report, the platform, the scope of the compromise, and whether you can safely inspect the site’s files and database. Wordfence says its WordPress plugin can help identify changed files and clean much malicious code, but it is not a complete automatic restoration solution. Database infections, concealed backdoors, and other issues can require additional investigation.

For WordPress sites hosted on Linux or Unix-type servers, Wordfence documents professional incident-response work that can include malware removal and investigation of how an attacker gained entry. That is one possible specialist route, not a Google requirement or a substitute for the review process in Search Console. For another platform, choose help with experience in that platform and the affected hosting environment.
What to expect after you submit a review
A review request is not an instant switch that guarantees rankings will return on a fixed date. Google’s stated intervals differ by issue and process: Safe Browsing delisting after a clean scan is typically within 24 hours, malware reviews take a few days, hacked-spam reviews can take several weeks, and most Manual Action reconsideration reviews take several days or weeks, with link-related cases sometimes taking longer. Search Console provides the response or request status; changes may also take time to propagate.
