If Snipping Tool is not popping up after you take a screenshot, first identify what is missing: the small notification banner or the Snipping Tool editor window. A missing banner is usually a notification-delivery problem; a missing editor points to the app not opening correctly. Use the matching repair path below, then test with Windows+Shift+S.
Identify what “not popping up” means
Windows normally shows a notification after a snip and places the capture in the Snipping Tool window. Those are separate pieces of the workflow, so one can fail while the other still works.
| What you see | Most relevant place to check | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The selection works, but no banner appears | Windows notification settings and Do Not Disturb | Check the notification list and Notification Center |
| The capture completes, but no editor window opens | Snipping Tool startup and app recovery options | Open Snipping Tool from Start, then use Repair if needed |
| The shortcut does nothing or the overlay never appears | Capture workflow itself | Try the shortcut again and launch Snipping Tool directly |
Take one deliberate test snip before changing anything. Press Windows+Shift+S, select a region, and note whether the selection is captured, whether a banner appears, and whether an editor window opens. Changing one setting at a time makes it clear which step is failing.
When the notification banner is missing
Turn on notifications globally
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Make sure the main notifications switch is enabled.
- In the app list, select Snipping Tool.
- Enable notifications for the app and turn on Show notification banners.
- Take another test snip.
Windows treats banners and the Notification Center as related but distinct destinations. A disabled banner can therefore make it appear that nothing happened even when the notification was recorded.

Open Notification Center by selecting the taskbar clock or notification icon, or press Windows+N on Windows 11. If the Snipping Tool alert is there, capture is working and only the on-screen banner needs attention. Review the app’s banner setting rather than repeatedly reinstalling the tool.
Check Do Not Disturb
Do Not Disturb sends most notifications to Notification Center instead of displaying banners. Turn it off temporarily and take another snip. If you need Do Not Disturb to remain enabled, allow Snipping Tool through its priority-notification settings, then test again. This is a diagnostic step: it distinguishes suppressed banners from a failed capture.
Allow time for a clean test
After changing notification settings, close the settings page and make a new capture rather than relying on an older alert. The notification behavior applies to subsequent events, and an existing Notification Center item does not prove that a new banner will appear.
When the Snipping Tool editor window is missing
Launch the app directly
- Open Start.
- Search for Snipping Tool.
- Launch it from the search result.
- Capture again from the app or press Windows+Shift+S.
If the editor appears after a direct launch, the capture shortcut was functioning but the app window had not opened automatically. If it still does not appear, use the app recovery controls.
Recommended Free Tools
Repair Snipping Tool
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Snipping Tool and open its app menu.
- Select Advanced options.
- Choose Repair, if that button is available.
- Launch Snipping Tool and perform a fresh test capture.
Repair is intended to correct the app without removing its data. Microsoft notes that recovery controls are not exposed for every app, so the absence of an Advanced options page or Repair button is a limitation of that Windows/app installation, not a step you have missed.
Reset only after Repair fails
If Repair is unavailable or does not restore the editor, return to the same Advanced options page and choose Reset, when offered. Reset is a stronger recovery action and can clear the app’s stored state. Use it after Repair, not before, and then open Snipping Tool and test a new screenshot.

Keep capturing while you diagnose the problem
You do not have to stop working while the pop-up issue is unresolved:
- Windows+Shift+S opens the snipping overlay for a new selection.
- Print Screen is another Windows capture shortcut documented for screenshots.
- When the Snipping Tool window is available, press Ctrl+C to copy the capture.
- Press Ctrl+S in the app window to save it.
If the banner is absent but the image is copied or saved successfully, your screenshot itself is not necessarily lost. The missing item is the notification presentation, not the pixels in the capture.

- Can you make a selection? If no, launch Snipping Tool from Start and try the shortcut again. If the overlay still does not open, the failure is occurring before notification delivery.
- Was an image captured? If yes, continue to the next question. If no, use the direct app launch and recovery steps above.
- Is the banner missing but Notification Center has an alert? Enable Snipping Tool banners and review Do Not Disturb.
- Is there no editor window even after a successful capture? Launch Snipping Tool directly, then use Repair and, if necessary, Reset.
- Did one change fix it? Stop there and repeat a second capture to confirm the result. Avoid changing several notification and app settings at once.
Common failure modes and fixes
“I can see the screenshot in Notification Center, but never as a banner.”
This points to banner configuration or Do Not Disturb. Confirm both the global notification switch and Snipping Tool’s Show notification banners setting. Then test with Do Not Disturb off, or permit the app through priority notifications.
“The screenshot works, but the editor appears only when I open the app myself.”
Use the direct-launch step first. If the behavior persists, open Snipping Tool’s Advanced options and select Repair. Reset is the follow-up only when Repair is unavailable or ineffective.

“There is no Snipping Tool entry in notification settings.”
Open Snipping Tool from Start and create a test capture, then return to the notification app list. Windows may not show an app’s notification controls until the app has generated activity. If the entry remains unavailable, focus on launching and repairing the app rather than changing unrelated notification categories.
“Repair or Reset is not listed.”
Those controls are not available for every app or installation. In that case, use the documented direct-launch and shortcut workarounds, and continue saving captures manually when the editor window opens. The missing controls do not indicate that Reset is hidden elsewhere in Settings.

“Do Not Disturb is required for my workflow.”
Leave it enabled and add Snipping Tool to the allowed priority notifications, if your Windows version exposes that option. Otherwise, use Notification Center as the expected destination for the alert instead of a banner.
Windows version and support notes
The Settings paths above describe Windows 11 and Windows 10 layouts, but labels and available app options can vary by Windows and Snipping Tool version. Windows 11 uses Windows+N for Notification Center. Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025; the capture and notification concepts still explain the symptom, but Windows 10 users may see older wording or fewer recovery controls. Do not assume that a missing button is a fault when the installed edition simply does not provide it.

When to stop troubleshooting locally
Stop changing settings once you can reliably capture, copy or save the image and have identified where the notification is delivered. If the editor still will not open after a direct launch and the available Repair or Reset actions, record which step fails—overlay, capture, notification or editor—and use that description when seeking Windows support. It is more useful than reporting only that Snipping Tool is “not popping up.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a missing banner mean the screenshot failed?
Not necessarily. A capture can complete and its notification can appear in Notification Center even when no banner is shown.
What shortcut opens Notification Center in Windows 11?
Press Windows+N, or select the taskbar clock or notification icon.
Should I choose Reset before Repair?
No. Use Repair first when it is available; use Reset only if Repair is unavailable or ineffective.
Can I use ScreenshotNeo for a local desktop screenshot?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures web pages through its API; the Windows shortcuts and Snipping Tool remain the appropriate tools for your desktop.
