If that works, Snagit itself is running and the problem is usually a keyboard shortcut or another application claiming the hotkey. If it does not, repair macOS permissions (on a Mac), investigate security software and graphics drivers, and—only on Snagit 2021 or older Windows installations—consider rebuilding the DataStore when Editor shows a blank or missing capture.
Start with the Capture button
Snagit can begin a capture from the Capture window, a saved preset, a global hotkey, or OneClick. Those entry points do not all fail for the same reason. Open the Capture window and click its Capture button, then select a small region.
- The region captures normally: the capture engine is healthy. Concentrate on the shortcut, preset, or OneClick path you normally use.
- The button also fails: continue with the operating-system and software checks below.
Testing a small region first avoids confusing a full-page or delayed capture problem with a basic failure. Once a small image appears in Snagit Editor, test the original workflow.
Windows: fix Print Screen and other hotkey conflicts
Snagit’s default global Windows capture shortcut is Print Screen. Windows 11 can assign that key to Snipping Tool, while OneDrive or Dropbox can register it before Snagit. A laptop keyboard may also require the Fn modifier.

Assign a shortcut Snagit can own
- Open Snagit Capture.
- Choose File > Capture Preferences > Hotkeys.
- Click the hotkey field and press a combination that is not used by another utility, such as a Ctrl/Shift combination.
- When appropriate, enable Allow Snagit to override other hotkey assignments.
- Save the setting and test the new shortcut while another window is visible.
If the new shortcut works, the original Print Screen path was intercepted. You can either keep the new combination or remove Print Screen assignments from Windows Snipping Tool, OneDrive, Dropbox, keyboard utilities, and accessibility software. Change one application at a time so you know which conflict was responsible.
Check the physical key
On compact keyboards, press Fn+Print Screen or the manufacturer’s documented equivalent. If an external keyboard works but the built-in keyboard does not, inspect the laptop’s function-key mode and keyboard driver rather than reinstalling Snagit.
When a preset or OneClick fails
Edit the preset and verify that it still uses a valid capture type and destination. Temporarily start from the Capture window instead of OneClick. A successful manual capture isolates a damaged preset or a startup utility from the capture engine.
The hotkey steps above match the Snagit 2025 interface; earlier releases may label or place the controls differently.
Mac: restore Screen Recording and related permissions
macOS blocks screen access until Snagit is authorized. TechSmith states that permissions are required for Snagit to capture, edit, and share images and videos. A permission can look enabled yet remain ineffective until the app is reopened.
- Open Snagit.
- Choose Snagit > Settings > Capture.
- Select Fix Capture Permissions.
- In macOS System Settings, enable every permission Snagit requests, including Screen Recording and any other item shown by the repair flow.
- If macOS offers Quit & Reopen, use it. Otherwise quit Snagit completely and launch it again.
Test the Capture button after reopening, then test your normal shortcut. If Snagit is listed more than once in a permission pane, enable the current installation and remove obsolete entries only after confirming which copy you launch.
Look for software that blocks capture
TechSmith says capture failures are usually caused by a system permission or a conflict with another app. Security tools that monitor keystrokes—especially anti-keylogger products—can stop a global shortcut without displaying an error.
Isolate the conflict safely
- Save work and record which security products are active.
- Use the Capture button, not the hotkey, to establish a baseline.
- Temporarily pause only the suspected keyboard or screen-protection module, following your organization’s policy.
- Test one capture, then immediately restore protection.
- If the test identifies a conflict, add Snagit to that product’s permitted-app list or choose a non-conflicting Snagit hotkey instead of leaving protection disabled.
On a managed or work computer, ask your administrator before changing endpoint-security settings. Do not treat a security exception as a fix for a macOS permission that is still disabled.
Update graphics drivers and check display hardware
Snagit and Camtasia support guidance also points to graphics-driver problems when capture or recording is unstable. Update Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD drivers from the computer manufacturer’s support site or through Windows Update. A manufacturer package is preferable on laptops because it includes the system’s display configuration.
- Note the graphics adapter in Windows Device Manager.
- Install the current driver offered for your exact computer model and Windows edition.
- Restart Windows, then test a small Snagit capture.
- If the issue began immediately after a driver update, use the manufacturer’s previous approved driver or Windows’ rollback option and retest.
Driver work is relevant when captures are blank, corrupted, or intermittently fail. It will not resolve an unassigned Print Screen key or a denied macOS permission.
Blank image or capture missing from Editor (Windows 2021 and older)
If Snagit reports a capture but Editor opens a blank image—or the image does not appear at all—the DataStore may be damaged. TechSmith documents the reset procedure specifically for Snagit 2021 and older. Confirm your version before using it; do not apply this legacy procedure casually to a newer release.
Back up before rebuilding
- Close Snagit and end any remaining Snagit processes in Task Manager.
- Open File Explorer and go to
%LocalAppData%TechSmithSnagitDataStore. - Copy the entire
DataStorefolder to a safe location. This backup contains prior captures. - Rename the original folder (for example,
DataStore-old) or move it out of the TechSmith directory. Keeping a backup is safer than permanently deleting it. - Launch Snagit. It should create a new, clean DataStore folder.
- Capture a test image and open it in Editor.
Older captures remain in the backup as SNAG files. Open individual SNAG files from that backup when you need to recover them. If the new folder does not solve the issue, close Snagit and restore the backed-up folder rather than continuing to delete data.
When capture or recording still fails
Once hotkeys, permissions, security software, drivers, and (where applicable) DataStore have been checked, narrow the failure by changing one variable at a time.
Separate image capture from video recording
Snagit’s recording path has additional dependencies. TechSmith lists webcam initialization, audio devices, hardware-accelerated recording, video quality, and overall system performance as factors. If still images work but video does not, disable the webcam and microphone for a short test, lower video quality, and compare hardware-accelerated recording enabled versus disabled. Re-enable each feature after identifying the setting that changes the result.
Try a different target
Capture the desktop, a simple text editor, and the application that originally failed. If only one application produces a blank result, its protected-content or graphics mode may be involved. Use the application’s windowed mode as a diagnostic and consult its administrator if screen capture is intentionally restricted.
Restart after system changes
Restart Windows after a driver or security-policy change. On macOS, quit and reopen Snagit after permission changes. Retest the Capture button first, then the hotkey, so you can tell whether the change fixed the engine or only the shortcut.
