How to Show Frequently Bought Together Products in an Online Store

Add a clearly labeled, optional add-on section to each product page. You can curate the products yourself (for example, “Pairs well with”) or calculate co-purchases from orders. Shopify uses manually configured complementary products in Search & Discovery, while WooCommerce’s Bought Together engine derives suggestions from order history.

What “frequently bought together” actually means

A frequently-bought-together recommendation contains products that appeared in the same order as the product being viewed. That is different from:

  • Related or similar products: substitutes or products with similar descriptions or collections.
  • Also purchased later: items a customer bought at another time, not in the same transaction.

Shopify describes complementary products as items bought in addition to the selected product, while WooCommerce distinguishes purchased-together items from products bought at some later point. See Shopify’s recommendation guidance and WooCommerce’s recommendation-engine documentation.

Choose the buying experience before choosing the widget

What you want to sell Use How it behaves
Optional accessories or consumables Recommendation section Customers add separate products alongside the main item.
A package sold for one price Fixed bundle The products are marketed and priced as one package.
A product assembled from customer-selected components Configurable kit Customers choose permitted parts before adding the configured product.
Items that must be purchased together Required-product or force-sell flow The additional products are not presented as optional suggestions.

Do not call substitutes “frequently bought together,” and do not use a recommendation widget to imply that a fixed package or mandatory add-on is optional. WooCommerce’s comparison guide maps these cases to Product Recommendations, Product Bundles, Composite Products, Force Sells and Grouped Products; Shopify’s complementary pattern is likewise for add-ons rather than alternatives. Shopify: add a “Pairs well with” section

Configure complementary products in the admin

  1. In Shopify admin, open Apps > Search & Discovery > Product recommendations.
  2. Select the product to edit and add its complementary products. Shopify allows up to 10 manually selected complementary products per product.
  3. Confirm every suggested item is active and has inventory above zero; unavailable products do not display.
  4. Open the theme editor, edit the product page’s product-information section, and add the Complementary products block. A compatible theme is required.
  5. Set a clear heading such as Pairs well with. Keep the suggestions visibly optional and show each item’s own price and selection control.

The admin workflow and stock requirements are documented by the Shopify Help Center. Shopify’s manually selected complementary products are separate from its automatic related-product recommendations, which may use purchase history, descriptions or related collections and can change over time.

Use a custom theme or app integration

A custom Shopify theme can request complementary products through the recommendations object and the Product Recommendations API. Results are populated asynchronously, so render a loading state or omit the section when no products are returned. Shopify recommends placing the block near the main product information, initially showing two or three products, and paginating when more are available; the API supports up to 10 complementary products per product. Follow the Shopify Developers implementation guide.

That implementation excludes out-of-stock products, zero-priced products, gift cards and products already in the visitor’s cart. Check the current Shopify documentation if your inventory, gift-card or cart rules are unusual.

WooCommerce: use the Bought Together engine

Create and deploy the recommendation engine

  1. Install and open the WooCommerce Product Recommendations extension, then create a Product Engine.
  2. Add the Bought Together amplifier and save the engine.
  3. Deploy the engine to the desired location, such as Product > Before Tabs.
  4. Choose the display heading and row or column layout.
  5. Use visibility conditions if the engine should run only for selected products.

Product Recommendations can also place suggestions on product, cart, checkout, category and order-received pages. It decides which products to show and where; it does not convert them into a bundle. See the Bought Together setup documentation.

Understand when WooCommerce will return results

The documented defaults are data thresholds, not universal ecommerce standards. With the extension defaults, the reference product must appear in at least 10 orders; a candidate must appear alongside it in at least 10 orders, in at least 5% of the reference product’s orders, and in at least 10 orders across the store. A relevance score then compares co-purchases with the reference product against the candidate’s overall purchase frequency.

The documentation lists a JLH threshold of 0.2 for broader recommendations and a GND threshold of 0.8 for stronger correlations. Lower or higher settings change how selective the engine is. Verify these values in the current extension and consider your store’s order volume: a new or low-volume catalog may legitimately produce no recommendations.

Make the section useful and trustworthy

  • Match the intent: show an accessory, refill, compatible cable or other genuine add-on—not a competing substitute.
  • Keep availability current: exclude inactive or unavailable products and handle an empty result without leaving a blank heading.
  • Explain the relationship: headings such as “Pairs well with” or “Often bought with this” are clearer than a generic “You may also like.”
  • Keep buying separate: display each optional item, price and quantity clearly so shoppers do not mistake suggestions for a single package.
  • Use a compact first view: on Shopify’s custom implementation, start with two or three products and paginate additional results.
  • Check the placement: product-page recommendations belong near product information; add cart or checkout placements only when they support a distinct shopping moment.

Quick implementation checklist

  • Decide whether the goal is an optional recommendation, fixed bundle, configurable kit or required add-on.
  • Choose curated pairings when merchandising control matters or order history is sparse.
  • Choose co-purchase recommendations when the store has enough orders to meet the platform’s thresholds.
  • Confirm platform, extension and theme compatibility before publishing the block.
  • Test an in-stock product, an out-of-stock suggested item and a product with no qualifying recommendations.
  • Verify that the section disappears or fails gracefully when the platform returns no results.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
