For a still WebP image, choose the output based on what you need: use PNG to retain transparency and avoid another lossy step, or JPEG for photographs that need broad legacy compatibility and usually smaller files. The quickest command-line options are dwebp input.webp -o output.png for PNG and magick input.webp output.jpg or magick input.webp output.png with ImageMagick. Current Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and Opera already display WebP, so conversion is only necessary when an app, workflow or recipient requires another format.
Choose the right destination format first
WebP is a RIFF container carrying VP8 (lossy) or VP8L (lossless) image data. Converting it does not automatically improve quality; it decodes the WebP and encodes a new file in the destination format. Keep the original WebP when quality, metadata or future re-use matters.
| Destination | Best use | Transparency | Quality considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| PNG | Logos, screenshots, diagrams and images with transparent areas | Preserved | Lossless output; generally the safest choice when you must avoid another lossy generation |
| JPEG | Photographs and broad compatibility with older software | Not supported | Re-encoding is lossy; transparent pixels need a background color |
| PAM, PPM or PGM | Technical raster-processing pipelines | Depends on the selected format and workflow | Supported by dwebp, but uncommon for ordinary sharing |
If you only need to view the image, try opening it in a current browser before converting. Conversion can discard animation, transparency or metadata depending on the chosen tool and format.
Convert WebP to PNG with Google’s dwebp
The WebP project supplies libwebp, including the dwebp decoder. It directly decompresses a WebP file into PNG, PAM, PPM or PGM.

Single-file conversion
dwebp input.webp -o output.png
Run the command from the directory containing input.webp, or provide full paths:
dwebp /path/to/input.webp -o /path/to/output.png
A successful run creates the output file at the path after -o. Open it in an image viewer and check dimensions, transparency and visual detail.
Other raster outputs
dwebp input.webp -o output.pam
dwebp input.webp -o output.ppm
dwebp input.webp -o output.pgm
These formats are useful when a scientific or image-processing program specifically requires them. PNG is the practical default for general use.
Important animation limitation
The official dwebp documentation states that animated WebP files are not supported. A command may therefore decode only a still workflow rather than preserving every frame. For animation, use a frame-aware editor or library and verify the frame count in the result.
Convert WebP with ImageMagick
ImageMagick uses the output filename extension to select the destination format. Its magick command handles both PNG and JPEG conversion and exposes controls for quality, lossless mode and alpha handling.

WebP to PNG
magick input.webp output.png
WebP to JPEG
magick input.webp output.jpg
JPEG cannot store transparency. If the source has an alpha channel, flatten it against an explicit background before writing JPEG so the result does not depend on an unexpected default:
magick input.webp -background white -alpha remove -alpha off output.jpg
The exact appearance of semi-transparent edges depends on the chosen background. Use a background that matches where the JPEG will be displayed.
Set JPEG quality deliberately
magick input.webp -quality 85 output.jpg
Quality values are ImageMagick encoding settings, not a promise that the new JPEG will match the original WebP byte-for-byte. Inspect the result at its intended display size and keep the source file for another export if needed.

ImageMagick can process a group of files. In a directory containing WebP images, this shell pattern converts each one to PNG:
for f in *.webp; do magick "$f" "${f%.webp}.png"; done
For JPEG output:
for f in *.webp; do magick "$f" -quality 85 "${f%.webp}.jpg"; done
Test the pattern on a copy of the folder first. Existing files with the same destination names may be overwritten according to your shell and ImageMagick settings.

Convert WebP in a Python program with Pillow
Pillow is useful when conversion is one step in a larger Python workflow, such as resizing, renaming or validating images. Install it in the environment used by your script, then open the WebP and save a destination format.
PNG output
from PIL import Image
with Image.open("input.webp") as image:
image.save("output.png", format="PNG")
JPEG output with transparency handling
from PIL import Image
with Image.open("input.webp") as image:
rgba = image.convert("RGBA")
background = Image.new("RGB", rgba.size, "white")
background.paste(rgba, mask=rgba.getchannel("A"))
background.save("output.jpg", format="JPEG", quality=85, optimize=True)
JPEG requires an RGB-style image, so the example composites transparent pixels onto white before saving. Change the background color when your design requires something else.

Pillow documents WebP frame-duration metadata. If the input is animated, inspect image.n_frames and frame durations, and choose an output format and writer that can retain all frames. A one-frame save is not an animation conversion.
Graphical and no-install options
If you do not want a command line, use an image editor that can open WebP and export PNG or JPEG. Look for an Export or Save As command, select the destination extension, and review transparency and quality settings before saving. The labels vary by application and operating system, so verify the resulting file rather than relying on the filename alone.
Online converters can be convenient for non-sensitive files, but uploading an image gives a third party a copy. For confidential screenshots, customer data or unpublished artwork, prefer a local tool such as dwebp, ImageMagick or Pillow.

Verify the converted file
- Dimensions: Confirm width and height did not change unexpectedly.
- Transparency: Open the PNG over both light and dark backgrounds. JPEG will always show a filled background.
- Color and detail: Compare at the size where the file will be used; JPEG artifacts are most visible around text and sharp edges.
- Animation: Check the frame count and playback duration when the source is animated.
- Metadata: If color profiles, orientation or other metadata matter, inspect them in your image tool and retain the original.
- File size: A PNG can be much larger than a photographic WebP. A smaller file is not automatically a higher-quality file.
Troubleshooting common conversion failures
“Command not found” for dwebp or magick
The decoder or ImageMagick is not installed, or its executable is not on your system PATH. Install the relevant package for your operating system, open a new terminal, and run dwebp -version or magick -version to confirm the shell can find it.
The output is blank or has an unexpected background
This usually involves alpha handling during JPEG export. PNG retains transparency; for JPEG, explicitly flatten onto a chosen color with ImageMagick or Pillow as shown above.
The converted file is larger than the WebP
That is normal when moving from a highly compressed WebP to lossless PNG. For a photograph where compatibility matters more than transparency, use JPEG and set its quality intentionally. Do not overwrite the WebP until you have checked the result.
An animated WebP loses frames
dwebp does not support animated WebP. Use an animation-aware editor or library, enumerate frames in Pillow, and export to a format that supports animation when all frames must remain.
Colors or orientation look different
Different viewers may interpret profiles and orientation metadata differently. Compare the source and output in the same viewer, inspect metadata, and keep the original for a second conversion with adjusted settings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does converting WebP to PNG restore quality lost in the original WebP?
No. PNG preserves the decoded pixels from the WebP, but it cannot reconstruct detail that was already discarded by lossy WebP encoding.
Why does my JPEG conversion have no transparent background?
JPEG has no transparency channel. Composite the image onto a deliberate background color before saving, or keep PNG when transparency is required.
Can I rename .webp to .jpg instead of converting it?
No. Renaming changes only the filename extension; the file remains WebP data and may not open in software expecting JPEG.
What should I do with an animated WebP?
Use an animation-aware editor or library, inspect every frame and duration, and export to a format that supports animation if retaining motion is required.
