Use Windows + Shift + S. Windows 11 opens the Snipping Tool overlay even when your keyboard has no Print Screen (PrtScn) key. Choose rectangular, window, full-screen, or freeform snip, select what you need, then edit, copy, save, or share the capture from Snipping Tool.
The quickest method: Windows + Shift + S
This shortcut is built into Windows 11 and does not depend on a PrtScn key.
- Press and hold the Windows logo key and Shift, then press S.
- The screen dims and the Snipping Tool capture bar appears.
- Choose a capture mode: rectangular, window, full-screen, or freeform.
- Make the selection. For a rectangular or freeform snip, drag around the area you want. For window mode, select the window; for full-screen mode, Windows captures the entire display.
- Open the Snipping Tool notification or window to work with the image.
The capture initially goes through Snipping Tool and the clipboard workflow. From there you can annotate, crop, copy, save with Save as, or share it.
Choose the right Snipping Tool mode

If you need a clean rectangular crop, rectangular mode is usually the least work. Window mode is useful for documenting an application because it avoids accidentally including neighboring windows. Full-screen mode is better when context matters, such as showing an entire desktop arrangement.

Edit, copy, save, and share the result
Annotate or crop
Use the Snipping Tool editing controls to mark important text, draw attention to a control, or crop away unrelated content before you send the image. Make the edits before saving if the file is intended for documentation.
Copy for immediate use
Choose the copy command in Snipping Tool when you want to paste the capture into an email, chat, document, or image editor. This is separate from saving a permanent image file, so copy it again after making edits if you changed the snip.
Save a file
Select Save as, choose a folder and filename, and pick the available image format in the save dialog. Use a descriptive name when you are collecting several captures for troubleshooting or a guide.
Share
Use Snipping Tool’s share option when you want to send the image through an installed sharing destination. If a destination is not offered, save the file and attach it from the app you are using.

Try the hardware-qualified shortcut
Microsoft also documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar for a device that does not have a PrtScn button. The mapping is hardware-dependent, so treat it as a device-specific option rather than a universal Windows shortcut.

- Hold Fn and the Windows logo key.
- Press the Space Bar.
- Check whether your device produces a screenshot or opens the capture workflow.
If nothing happens, return to Windows + Shift + S. A laptop manufacturer can assign Fn combinations differently, and Microsoft’s wording explicitly qualifies this shortcut by hardware.
Why Windows + PrtScn does not solve this problem
Windows + PrtScn is a full-screen shortcut that saves an image under Pictures > Screenshots. It still requires a physical or mapped PrtScn key, so it is not a workaround when your keyboard genuinely lacks that key. Use the Snipping Tool overlay instead.
Use the On-Screen Keyboard as an accessibility aid
Windows 11 includes an On-Screen Keyboard (OSK) for people who cannot use a physical keyboard comfortably or whose keyboard is missing keys. Turn it on at Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.

The documented, key-independent capture route remains Windows + Shift + S. If your physical keyboard is unreliable, you can use the OSK for general text and shortcut entry while keeping Snipping Tool as the capture application.
A dependable workflow for repeated captures
- Arrange the app or page exactly as it should appear, closing unrelated windows and notifications.
- Press Windows + Shift + S and select the narrowest mode that includes the evidence you need.
- Make the snip, then open the Snipping Tool result.
- Crop or annotate only after confirming that the complete target was captured.
- Copy it for a one-time paste or use Save as when you need a file that can be reopened.
- Use a consistent filename and folder when creating a series of screenshots.
This workflow avoids the common mistake of assuming a clipboard copy is a saved backup. If the image matters, save it before closing the editing window.

Troubleshooting Windows 11 screenshots without PrtScn
The overlay does not appear
- Press the three keys together: Windows logo key, Shift, and S. Do not substitute Ctrl for Shift.
- Try again after releasing all keys; a modifier key held from an earlier shortcut can prevent the expected action.
- Restart Snipping Tool or Windows if the shortcut worked previously but no longer opens the overlay.
The wrong area was captured
Press the shortcut again and select a different mode. Rectangular and freeform captures depend on where you begin and end the drag; window mode is preferable when you want the complete application window.
You cannot find the image
A capture made with Windows + Shift + S is first delivered to Snipping Tool and the clipboard workflow. Open the Snipping Tool result and use Save as if you need a file. The automatic Pictures > Screenshots location applies to Windows + PrtScn, which is unavailable when the key is missing.
Fn + Windows + Space does nothing
That combination is conditional on the device’s keyboard hardware. Use Windows + Shift + S, or check the device maker’s keyboard documentation for its Fn mapping. Do not assume that another laptop model uses the same combination.
The capture contains sensitive information
Before sharing, crop or cover account numbers, tokens, private messages, and other data in Snipping Tool. If you need an untouched original for records, save the original first and create a separate redacted copy.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Repeat the capture after the target window has finished drawing and verify the result in Snipping Tool before sending it. For a scrolling page or content outside the visible display, take multiple captures; the built-in shortcut captures what is available on screen rather than automatically creating a full webpage document.
