Treat those as marketplace snapshots, not benchmarks.
1. YouTube Screenshot Button: the best general choice
Install the Mozilla Recommended YouTube Screenshot Button by Ram and joggee-fr from Firefox Add-ons. Open a YouTube video, pause at the frame you need, and use the screenshot button in the player. The Shift+A shortcut is useful when the pointer is covering part of the image. Choose PNG for lossless graphics or JPEG for smaller files, then download the result or copy it to the clipboard.
Why it suits most workflows
- A visible player control avoids searching browser menus.
- The shortcut helps when controls are hidden or the video is full-screen.
- You can choose an image format and decide between a file and clipboard output.
- The listing says it works with both regular videos and Shorts, an important distinction because Shorts support is not universal.

2. Youtube Video Screenshot Tool: clean video-only frames
Person4268’s Youtube Video Screenshot Tool places its control in the player’s settings menu. Its listing says the image is captured at the video’s selected resolution and contains only the video—“no captions or the player bar”—then opens it in a new window. That makes it a better fit than a page screenshot when subtitles, timeline controls or YouTube chrome must not appear.
Workflow
- Set YouTube’s quality menu to the resolution you want.
- Pause on the exact frame.
- Open the player settings menu and choose the screenshot command.
- Save the image from the new window.
Some ad blockers may close that new window, according to the listing. If nothing appears, temporarily allow the window for YouTube or use an extension that downloads directly.
3. Screenshot for YouTube | 4K Frame & Thumbnail Cap
AtSbi’s extension advertises full-resolution PNG or JPG capture, a keyboard shortcut and images without player controls. The listing showed version 1.2.9, 125 users and two reviews on September 29, 2026. Those small marketplace numbers do not establish that it is sharper or more reliable than the alternatives; consider it when its shortcut or advertised output matches your workflow.
The listing requests clipboard input and YouTube access and says the developer reports no data collection. That is a developer disclosure, not an independent privacy audit.

4. YouTube Screenshot Button by Serafim
Serafim’s add-on is aimed at one-click JPEG captures and also mentions embedded videos and OK.ru. It explicitly does not support YouTube Shorts. Its permission scope is access to all websites, broader than the youtube.com-only scope listed by Ram/joggee-fr and AtSbi, so check Firefox’s permission prompt carefully before installing.

5. Firefox’s built-in Screenshot tool
For a no-install option, Firefox’s Screenshot command can capture the visible area, a selected rectangle, an automatically detected page element or the full page. You can save the result or copy it. It is excellent for documenting a YouTube page, comments or a thumbnail surrounded by page context.
Why it is different from a frame extractor
Mozilla’s support documentation describes page and full-page screenshots, not a command that reads the video’s current decoded frame. A page capture can therefore include the player bar, captions, browser layout or overlays. Use it when context matters; use a YouTube-specific extension when the video image alone matters.
How to capture a frame reliably in Firefox
- Choose the right tool. Use Ram/joggee-fr for a general YouTube workflow, person4268 for a video-only frame, or Firefox Screenshot for page context.
- Set playback quality first. A screenshot cannot contain more detail than the frame Firefox is displaying. Select the desired quality before capturing.
- Pause precisely. Use the video timeline or keyboard controls, wait for the image to finish rendering, and avoid capturing during a transition.
- Clear temporary overlays. Move the pointer away, close menus and disable captions if the extension does not remove them.
- Capture and verify. Open the saved PNG/JPEG at 100% and check that the intended frame, aspect ratio and resolution were retained.
- Respect rights. A screenshot may be copyrighted. Follow the video owner’s licence, YouTube’s terms and your local law before publishing or redistributing it.
Choosing between the extensions
- Need Shorts: choose Ram/joggee-fr; Serafim’s listing excludes Shorts.
- Need no captions or player bar: try person4268’s tool, while allowing its new window if your blocker interferes.
- Need PNG/JPG and a shortcut: Ram/joggee-fr offers both format choices; AtSbi advertises similar controls.
- Need the page around the video: use Firefox Screenshot.
- Need the narrowest stated site scope: compare the permission prompts; Ram/joggee-fr and AtSbi list YouTube access, while Serafim lists all-websites access.
Ratings, review totals, user counts and update dates can change. They are useful for context, not controlled comparisons of image quality, speed or reliability. No independently published test in the available material compares these extensions.
When a capture fails: troubleshooting
No screenshot button appears
Reload the YouTube tab after installation, confirm the extension is enabled in Menu → Add-ons and themes → Extensions, and test a normal youtube.com watch page. A browser restart can refresh an extension that was installed while a tab was open.
The shortcut does nothing
Click the video first so Firefox has focus, then try the shortcut again. Check about:addons → Extensions → the extension → Options for a configurable shortcut or conflict with another add-on.

The image includes captions or controls
Use person4268’s tool, whose listing specifically says it excludes captions and the player bar, or turn captions off and move the pointer away before using another extension. Firefox’s built-in page screenshot is not designed to remove video UI.
A new window closes immediately
This is the known workflow caveat for person4268’s tool: the listing warns that some ad blockers close the capture window. Allow pop-ups for the page, pause the blocker for that site, or select a downloader-based extension instead.

The frame looks soft
Set YouTube to a higher available quality before pausing. Browser zoom changes page layout but does not create detail missing from the decoded video frame. For a 4K source, ensure the player has actually switched to 4K before capturing.
Clipboard paste fails
Use the download option, check Firefox’s clipboard permission prompt, and verify that another application is not holding clipboard access. Ram/joggee-fr and AtSbi both list clipboard-related permissions.

Practical limits and expectations
These Firefox add-ons operate on the frame rendered in your browser, so playback quality, DRM restrictions, network conditions and overlays affect the result. The listings do not provide independent speed, reliability or quality benchmarks. For a single image, an extension is simplest; for many URLs, scheduled jobs, PDFs, custom headers or an AI-agent workflow, an API avoids keeping a browser tab open and gives you an explicit response about whether a capture was billed.
