Choose the accepted pixel dimensions for the target iPhone or iPad display group and orientation, then resize and, if necessary, crop the image to those exact dimensions. Export as JPEG or PNG with transparency removed. Apple’s current 6.9-inch iPhone group, for example, accepts three portrait sizes: 1260 × 2736, 1290 × 2796, or 1320 × 2868 pixels.
Choose the right App Store screenshot size first
Resizing is not simply a matter of making an image larger or smaller. App Store Connect checks image dimensions and format, and a missing required screenshot size can cause a submission error. Start by identifying the platform, display group, and orientation for the listing. Use Apple’s current screenshot specification table as the authority immediately before exporting: device groups and accepted dimensions can change.
iPhone screenshots
For the 6.9-inch iPhone display group, Apple lists these accepted portrait dimensions: 1260 × 2736, 1290 × 2796, or 1320 × 2868 pixels. For landscape, switch the width and height: 2736 × 1260, 2796 × 1290, or 2868 × 1320. These are alternative accepted sizes for that group, not a universal iPhone requirement. Other iPhone groups may have different dimensions.
iPad screenshots
The 13-inch iPad group includes portrait dimensions of 2064 × 2752 and 2048 × 2732 pixels. The corresponding landscape dimensions are 2752 × 2064 and 2732 × 2048. Do not submit an iPhone-sized image for an iPad listing; check the specification table for the precise iPad group you intend to support.

How many screenshots?
Apple’s current screenshot specifications allow 1 to 10 screenshots in the applicable screenshot set. That is an upload allowance, not a requirement to provide ten images. Confirm which size sets are required for your platform and submission in App Store Connect.
Resize and export a screenshot without distorting it
The safest workflow is to use a simulator or physical-device capture that is close to the target aspect ratio, then crop or resize to a dimension Apple accepts. Do not force the image into a new shape by stretching it: distortion can make text, controls, and device UI look wrong. If the source and target ratios differ, crop the excess or recompose the screenshot while keeping the important app content visible.
- Find the target dimensions. In Apple’s current screenshot specification table, select the intended iPhone or iPad display group and portrait or landscape orientation. Record one accepted width-height pair.
- Capture the screen. Use a suitable simulator or physical device. Apple documents capture from both. Keep the app state and content representative of what the listing should show.
- Open the image in an editor. Use an image editor with explicit pixel-dimension and crop controls. Set the canvas or crop to the selected exact dimensions. If the source ratio differs, crop or recompose instead of stretching.
- Inspect the crop. Check that key text, controls, and app content remain visible and that the result has the intended portrait or landscape composition.
- Export as JPEG/JPG or PNG. Apple accepts these screenshot formats. Ensure the exported image contains no alpha channel or transparency; a file can look opaque in an editor while still retaining transparency data.
- Upload and validate in App Store Connect. Review the assigned device group and any format or dimension warnings. Supply other required sizes or sets before submitting.
When App Store Connect can scale screenshots for you
If your app’s interface is the same across device sizes and localizations, Apple says you can provide only the highest-resolution screenshots required and App Store Connect will automatically scale them down. This can avoid maintaining duplicate images for compatible sizes. It does not eliminate the need to check the requirements for the listing: required screenshot assets still need to be present, and the automatic-scaling guidance applies to a consistent interface.

Use Media Manager to add custom screenshots for other sizes or localizations when the composition, interface, or localized content needs to differ. For example, a layout that changes substantially between iPhone and iPad may not be represented well by simply scaling one image. Likewise, translated text may change line breaks or crowd a composition; custom localized screenshots give you control over those differences.

What to do when a capture has the wrong size or ratio
Simulator captures do not always match physical-device screenshot dimensions and aspect ratios. Apple specifically notes that visionOS Simulator captures can differ from physical-device captures and says they can be resized and cropped to match App Store requirements. The same practical principle applies to preparing a mismatched source image: use the target dimensions and crop with care, rather than stretching.
Before cropping, decide which screen content must remain visible. If a tighter crop would cut off a key control or make the app screen confusing, recapture at a closer device size or create a deliberate composition at the target aspect ratio. Do not assume that filling the target rectangle is more important than preserving a legible, representative app UI.

Validate the exported file before upload
- Dimensions: the image width and height exactly match a size accepted for the intended display group and orientation.
- Orientation: portrait and landscape dimensions are not accidentally swapped.
- Format: the file is JPEG/JPG or PNG.
- Transparency: no alpha channel or transparent pixels remain.
- Composition: important UI has not been clipped or distorted during resize and crop.
- Set completeness: required screenshot sizes for the specific platform and asset set are present in App Store Connect.
Troubleshooting common screenshot problems
App Store Connect rejects the dimensions
Check the target device group and orientation again. A size accepted for a different iPhone or iPad group may not satisfy this set. Inspect the exported file’s actual pixel dimensions rather than relying on the editor’s displayed zoom or print size, then export again at an accepted pair from Apple’s current table.
The image looks stretched or the UI looks unnaturally wide
The source was likely scaled non-proportionally to fill the target dimensions. Undo that resize, preserve the source aspect ratio, and crop or recompose to the target ratio. Review text and circular or rounded UI elements for distortion.
The image looks correct but the upload reports a format or transparency issue
Export a fresh JPEG/JPG or PNG and disable transparency or flatten the image against the intended background. Verify that the resulting file—not just the editor canvas—has no alpha channel.

A screenshot size is missing at submission
App Store Connect can report an error when required screenshot sizes are absent. Review the platform’s submission requirements and the screenshot sets assigned to the app. Add the missing required images, or use Apple’s automatic downscaling only where its guidance for a consistent UI applies.
The crop cuts off important content
Do not stretch the image to recover the missing area. Return to the uncropped source and choose a better crop, capture at a closer aspect ratio, or make a separate composition for that display group. If text or layout differs by localization, provide a custom image for that localization through Media Manager.

Can I resize an existing iPhone screenshot for an iPad listing?
Only if you prepare it for an accepted iPad dimension and the resulting crop or composition still represents the app clearly; iPhone dimensions do not substitute for an iPad screenshot size.
Does resizing alone make a screenshot App Store-ready?
No. The final image must also use an accepted format, contain no alpha channel or transparency, match the intended display group and orientation, and satisfy the required screenshot set.
