Use a duplicate-media tool that compares file contents, not filenames, then review every usage before deleting anything. Create a database and uploads backup (or work on staging), choose a canonical copy, test affected pages, and only permanently delete after your restore window has passed. “Automatic” tools can index and group files for you, but safe deletion still requires confirmation.
What counts as a duplicate image?
An exact duplicate is a separate media attachment whose file bytes match another image. Content hashing (such as MD5) can identify renamed copies; matching titles or filenames cannot. Visually similar images, resized derivatives, and edited versions are not necessarily duplicates and should not be removed as if they were identical.
Why automatic deletion can break a WordPress site
An attachment may be referenced in more places than the Media Library shows. Before removing a copy, check post and page bodies, featured images, galleries, shortcodes, custom fields, WooCommerce product galleries, page-builder data, CSS backgrounds, widgets, menus, the site logo and icon, theme or Customizer options, and SEO-plugin data. No scanner can detect every custom or hard-coded reference, so manual checks remain necessary.
Safe workflow for automatic duplicate cleanup
- Back up first. Save a tested database backup and the complete
wp-content/uploadsdirectory, or create a staging clone. A plugin that deletes attachments or files can cause permanent data loss. - Choose a tool that matches your safeguards. Look for content hashing, usage locations, reference rewriting, and a recoverable trash or recycle bin.
- Run the index or scan to completion. Large libraries may use background batches or resumable jobs. Do not start a second cleanup while the first scan is still running.
- Inspect each duplicate group. Compare dimensions, attachment metadata, URL expectations, and the usage list. Keep the copy that is actually referenced and has the most reliable metadata.
- Merge, delete, or move to trash only after review. If a tool can rewrite references, confirm exactly which content types it updates. Treat a featured-image safeguard as limited protection, not a site-wide guarantee.
- Test the site. Open representative posts and pages, featured images, galleries, WooCommerce products, and page-builder templates. Check desktop and mobile layouts and browser developer-console errors where relevant.
- Permanently delete last. Keep the backup or recycle-bin copy until the site has passed your checks and the restoration period you chose has ended.

Choose broad scanning and restoration
DevDome Safe Media Cleaner is the better fit when unused-file detection, broad reference checks, resumable batches, and a Recycle Bin matter more than grouping identical files. In its current version, it will not present identical copies as a dedicated duplicate group.
Choose reference-rewriting merges
Media Library Tools is the clearest option when you need an MD5-based exact-match list and a documented Pro Merge that rewrites several reference types. Because merges are permanent, verify the kept attachment and maintain a tested backup.

Choose dashboard comparison
Mediapapa suits a review process centered on usage tracking, side-by-side inspection, and an indicated reference version. Confirm the exact bulk-removal safeguards available in the edition you install.
Choose recoverable trash
Media Purge groups exact MD5 matches and moves candidates to recoverable trash, which reduces the impact of a mistaken first pass. Its advertised automatic merge and scheduled cleanup features are not available yet.

Checks to perform before permanent deletion
- Open a post and page that used the old attachment URL, including content created with a page builder.
- Verify featured images, gallery blocks, shortcodes, and responsive image markup.
- Inspect WooCommerce products, variations, category images, and builder templates.
- Check custom fields, widgets, menus, site logo and icon, Customizer options, CSS backgrounds, and SEO-plugin fields.
- Review redirects, CDN or cache references, sitemap entries, and any hard-coded URLs maintained outside WordPress.
- Confirm that thumbnails and the original file still load after the merge or deletion.
What “automatic” really means
Automatic indexing, hashing, grouping, or scheduled scanning does not mean unattended deletion is safe. Some tools require a deliberate merge; others move files to trash; and some provide only a candidate list. The safest repeatable process is automated discovery followed by human selection, staged testing, and delayed permanent deletion.
