WordPress does not provide a built-in, site-wide “Convert to blocks” command. The core editor converts one Classic block at a time. For many posts, use a backup-first workflow with a migration plugin or a reviewed WP-CLI process, test representative content on staging, convert in controlled batches, and inspect both the block structure and the public pages.
What WordPress can convert natively
The Classic block reproduces the classic editor inside Gutenberg. Its toolbar includes Convert to blocks, which changes the content in that block into individual Gutenberg blocks. WordPress documents this as an editor action for the current Classic block, not as a bulk operation across a site.
If you only need to update a few posts, open each post, select its Classic block, choose Convert to blocks, review the result, and save. A large archive needs a different workflow.
Prepare before converting anything
Create and verify a complete backup
Make a full database and site-files backup. Confirm that you can restore it, rather than assuming a backup job completed successfully. Keep the original backup until every batch has been checked.

Use a staging copy
Clone the site to staging when your hosting setup allows it. Run the conversion there first, using the same WordPress, PHP, theme, and plugin versions as production. A bulk-conversion tool may alter stored post content, so staging gives you a safe place to discover layout or shortcode problems.
Inventory the real migration scope
Do not assume every record is Classic content. Identify which post types and statuses contain the material you intend to migrate. Include published, draft, private, scheduled, and custom post types only when they are genuinely in scope and supported by the tool you choose.
Choose a bulk-conversion method

No approach is universally safest. Select the one whose scope, review controls, compatibility notes, and recovery process match your site.

A cautious bulk-migration procedure
1. Build a representative test set
On staging, choose posts that include the structures your site actually uses:

- Tables and custom formatting
- Embeds
- Shortcodes
- Content generated or modified by other plugins
- Custom post types and less-common post statuses
Open each test item in the editor before conversion and record its public URL. After conversion, compare the editor structure with the original and load the public page in a logged-out browser.
2. Inspect the target list
Use the selected tool’s scan or review screen. Confirm the post type and status filters, titles, and counts. Remove anything outside the migration plan. A scan result is a candidate list, not proof that every item is safe to convert.

3. Convert a small batch
Start with a small, representative group rather than the entire archive. Keep a record of the IDs or URLs processed and the tool settings used. If you use a command-line workflow, run it iteratively and monitor each batch instead of launching an unreviewed site-wide change.
4. Check the editor and front end
For every batch, verify headings, links, images, captions, tables, embeds, shortcode behavior, spacing, and responsive layout. Check templates and theme styles as well as the post body. A post can look structurally correct in the editor while rendering differently on the public page.

5. Continue, stop, or recover
Proceed only when the batch passes review. Stop if content disappears, a shortcode prints as text, an embed fails, or the layout changes materially. Restore the staging backup or use the specific converter’s documented revert function where available. Do not assume that one plugin’s recovery feature applies to another; at least one bulk tool explicitly describes its conversion as irreversible.

Important compatibility limits
Custom blocks
10up’s listing says custom blocks are not handled by default. Content that depends on proprietary block types, theme code, or plugin-specific transformations therefore needs a targeted test and possibly manual rebuilding.
Nested and inner blocks
Nested-block support can depend on the Gutenberg plugin and version. The 10up listing associates this support with Gutenberg 10.9.0 or later and notes that it does not work with Gutenberg bundled in WordPress Core 5.7.2 or earlier. Plugin compatibility changes, so check the current listing against your WordPress and PHP versions before migration.
Shortcodes and unmapped markup
Some converters describe mappings from shortcodes to Shortcode blocks, embeds to Embed blocks, and otherwise-unmapped content to HTML blocks. Those mappings preserve content in a container; they do not guarantee that the original plugin behavior, styling, or editing experience will be recreated.

Custom post types and visibility
Support varies. One dashboard tool describes filters for custom post types, while another describes editor-supporting public post types exposed through the REST API. Confirm that the target type is supported and that your chosen statuses are included before selecting a batch.
When the built-in action is enough
Use the core Convert to blocks control when only a small number of posts need migration, when each post requires close editorial attention, or when the content contains unusual markup that you want to handle manually. It avoids a broad database change but requires more hands-on time.
When a plugin or WP-CLI process makes sense
A reviewed dashboard workflow is useful when editors need filters, a visible candidate list, and selected-post conversion. A WP-CLI process can suit a technical team managing a large archive and repeatable batches. In either case, retain the backup, document each batch, and verify the rendered result. The 10up plugin description characterizes its incremental strategy as reducing risk because only content that needs changing is altered.

Common failure points and responses
- Unexpected posts appear in the list: tighten post-type and status filters and review the candidate list again.
- A shortcode becomes plain text or an HTML block: identify the plugin that supplied it, test that plugin on staging, and rebuild or retain the shortcode where necessary.
- Images or captions change: compare the media attachment, alignment, dimensions, and caption in both editor and front end.
- A custom block is missing: check whether the converter supports it; if not, plan a manual replacement or keep the original structure.
- The public layout changes: inspect theme CSS, block styles, responsive behavior, and any template conditions before continuing.
- You need to undo a batch: use the converter’s documented per-post revert if it provides one, or restore the verified backup. Never rely on an assumed undo function.
Practical decision checklist
- Have you created and tested a restorable full backup?
- Have you run the process on staging with production-matching versions?
- Have you identified the exact post types and statuses to include?
- Have you tested representative images, tables, embeds, shortcodes, custom formatting, and plugin-generated content?
- Do you know whether custom blocks and nested blocks are supported by the current tool versions?
- Have you documented each converted batch and checked its editor structure and public rendering?
- Do you know the selected tool’s actual recovery procedure before starting?
