Take a screenshot with Windows + Shift + S
Windows 10 and Windows 11 include Snipping Tool, so no extra screenshot program is required for the basic workflow.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. A dimmed snipping overlay appears.
- Choose a capture mode from the toolbar.
- Select the area, window or display you want.
- Select the notification that appears to open the capture in Snipping Tool, or paste the clipboard image into another application.
- Trim the edges if necessary and save the result with the Save button or Ctrl+S.
Microsoft says captures can be automatically saved in the Screenshots folder. The exact automatic-saving behavior and folder can vary by Snipping Tool version; check Snipping Tool Settings if you want to change it.
Choose the right snipping mode

Start with Rectangle when you already know the useful area. Capturing less surrounding content means less cropping later. Window mode is useful for documenting an application, while Full screen is better when several windows or the whole desktop matter.

Crop and mark up the capture in Snipping Tool
After the snip, select the notification thumbnail to open Snipping Tool’s editor. Select the Crop control, drag the handles until only the required content remains, and confirm the crop. The editor also provides pen, highlighter, shapes and erasing tools for annotations.
Save a cropped image
- With the crop complete, select the Save button.
- Choose a filename, location and supported image format in the save dialog.
- Select Save, or press Ctrl+S when the editor is active.
You can copy the image instead with Ctrl+C and paste it into email, a document, chat or an image editor. A clipboard copy is not the same as a deliberately saved file, so save it if you need a durable copy.
Keyboard shortcuts and alternative capture methods
Print Screen (PrtSc)
Pressing Print Screen—also labeled PrtSc, PrtScn or PrntScrn—normally copies the full screen to the clipboard. Paste it into Paint, Word, an email or another editor, then crop and save there.
Windows logo key + PrtScn
On devices that support it, Windows logo key + PrtScn captures the screen and saves the image automatically. Look in File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. Hardware and keyboard layouts differ, so this shortcut is not available on every PC.

If your keyboard has no Print Screen key
Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an option on some hardware. Treat it as device-dependent rather than a universal replacement.
Useful Snipping Tool shortcuts
- Alt+M: choose a snipping mode.
- Alt+N: start a new snip using the last mode.
- Alt+D: set a delay from 1 to 5 seconds.
- Ctrl+C: copy the capture.
- Ctrl+S: save the capture.
Capture a menu that disappears
Some menus close as soon as focus changes. Microsoft’s legacy guidance describes opening the menu, pressing Ctrl+PrtScn, and then selecting the snip. The available behavior depends on your Windows and Snipping Tool version, so test it before relying on it for documentation.
Delayed screenshots for menus and temporary states
Open Snipping Tool, set a delay with Alt+D (between one and five seconds), then prepare the screen during the countdown. Delays help with menus, hover states and dialogs that are difficult to keep open while starting a capture. If the target still closes, use the menu-capture shortcut above or capture the whole window and crop afterward.
Windows 11-only feature notes
Microsoft identifies Perfect Screenshot and Color picker as features for Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs, not universal Windows functions. Perfect Screenshot can automatically reframe a rectangular selection around prominent on-screen content, after which you can fine-tune the crop handles. If you do not see these controls, your Windows edition or hardware may not support them.

Browser captures and URL text
When a browser capture is saved as HTML, Snipping Tool may include the page URL beneath the snip. Microsoft provides an option to turn that behavior off. Check Snipping Tool’s settings if a URL appears in an image where it is not wanted.
Troubleshooting
Windows + Shift + S seems to work, but no file appears
- Check the clipboard by pressing Ctrl+V in Paint or another image-capable app.
- Select the Snipping Tool notification to open the editor.
- Save explicitly with Ctrl+S; the overlay can copy an image before you choose a filename.
Windows + PrtScn did not save anything
Open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. If the folder is empty, your keyboard or device may not support the automatic-save shortcut. Use Windows + Shift + S or Print Screen followed by a manual save.
The capture contains too much desktop
Repeat the capture with Rectangle or Window mode. Selecting the target before capture is usually cleaner than removing large borders afterward.
The wrong monitor or window was captured
Move the target to the display you intend to capture, select Window mode and click the correct application, or drag a Rectangle selection around the desired monitor area. Full screen captures everything visible on the selected display and can include unrelated content.

A menu closes before I can select it
Use a one-to-five-second delay, or try the Ctrl+PrtScn menu workflow. If neither is available in your version, capture the containing window and crop the menu region in the editor.
The crop or annotation is not in the saved file
Make sure you are editing the notification-opened image rather than a separate clipboard copy, then save again after the edit. Reopen the saved file to verify the final pixels.
