For a screenshot of the page currently visible, open Chrome DevTools and choose Capture screenshot. For the entire scrollable page, choose Capture a full size screenshot. These built-in tools work on Windows, Linux and macOS laptops without installing an extension.
Choose the capture you actually need
Chrome can capture more than a normal operating-system screenshot. Decide whether you need the viewport, a selected region, one inspected element or the complete page before opening the command.
| Capture type | Chrome result | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Visible viewport | Capture screenshot saves what is currently inside the browser viewport. | A bug report, chart or exact on-screen state. |
| Full page | Capture a full size screenshot includes content below the fold in the page’s scrollable area. | Long articles, receipts, documentation and design reviews. |
| Area | DevTools captures a rectangle that you draw. | One section without browser chrome or unrelated content. |
| Node or element | DevTools captures an inspected HTML element, including a node larger than the screen. | A card, table, component or embedded section. |
| Mobile/device view | DevTools can capture a page rendered in device emulation and can add a device frame. | Checking how a responsive layout appears on a phone-sized viewport. |
A full-page image is not the same as repeatedly stitching ordinary screen captures. Chrome renders the page’s scrollable content for the capture, so the result can be taller than your laptop display. Sticky headers, animations, cross-origin embeds and virtualized lists may still render differently from what you expect; inspect the result when the image matters.
Capture the visible page in Chrome DevTools
- Open the website in Chrome and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+Option+I on macOS.
- In the DevTools toolbar, open the More options menu (the three-dot button).
- Choose Capture screenshot. Chrome downloads an image of the current viewport.
- Open the downloaded file from Chrome’s download shelf or your laptop’s Downloads folder and rename or move it as needed.
The capture contains the webpage viewport, not the DevTools panels themselves. Close menus or overlays on the page first if they should not appear in the image.
Take a full-page screenshot in Chrome
- Navigate to the page and allow images, fonts and other content to finish loading.
- Open DevTools using the operating-system shortcut above.
- Open More options in DevTools.
- Select Capture a full size screenshot.
- Wait for Chrome to generate and download the image, then check the top, middle and bottom of the file.
This command captures content that is not currently visible in the viewport. If a page loads images only when you scroll, scroll through it once before capturing so lazy-loaded sections have a chance to appear. Pages that continuously append new items, use an internal scroll panel or replace content while you scroll may require a different approach or a test capture.

Use Chrome’s command menu when the option is hard to find
The DevTools command menu is often the quickest route, especially when the toolbar is narrow.
- Open DevTools.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+Shift+P on macOS.
- Type screenshot.
- Choose the command matching your goal, such as Capture screenshot or Capture full size screenshot.
If a command does not appear, click inside DevTools before using the shortcut. The command menu searches DevTools actions, not the webpage’s own search box.
Capture only part of a webpage
Draw an area
Use DevTools’ documented area-capture technique when you need a rectangular portion of the rendered page. Open the screenshot commands from the DevTools menu or command menu, select the area option, then drag around the region. This avoids cropping a full-page file in a separate editor.

Capture one element
- Open DevTools and select the element picker (cursor icon).
- Click the card, table, image or other component on the page.
- With that node selected in the Elements panel, use the node screenshot command.
- For an element taller or wider than the viewport, use the node option that captures the entire node rather than only its visible portion.
Element capture follows the node’s rendered styles. An element with overflow clipping, a collapsed state or content inside a separate iframe may need to be opened or captured separately.
Capture a mobile presentation or device frame
To document a responsive layout, toggle the device toolbar in DevTools, select a device preset or enter a custom viewport, and reload if the site changes its layout only at load time. Then run the appropriate screenshot command. Chrome’s DevTools screenshot techniques include capturing the mobile presentation and adding a device frame. Verify the selected width, height, device scale and orientation before saving, because those settings change the pixels in the file.
Make full-page captures more reliable
- Finish navigation first. Wait for the page’s main content, fonts and images. A screenshot taken during a redirect or skeleton state records that transient state.
- Load lazy content. Scroll through long pages once, or trigger the page’s “load more” control, before taking the final capture.
- Stop moving content. Pause videos, carousels and animated banners. A capture can otherwise contain an arbitrary animation frame.
- Dismiss unwanted UI. Close cookie notices, newsletter dialogs, chat bubbles and account prompts when they obscure the subject.
- Check nested scrolling. A page with a scrollable article inside a fixed shell may not include every inner-panel row in a full-size page capture. Capture that element separately if required.
- Use a consistent viewport. Record the laptop’s window size and zoom level for repeatable bug reports. Browser zoom changes layout breakpoints and text wrapping.
- Review the downloaded file. Inspect the beginning, a representative middle section and the bottom. Look for missing images, duplicated sticky headers, clipped shadows or blank iframe regions.
Built-in DevTools or a Chrome extension?
| Consideration | DevTools | GoFullPage extension |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Already included with Chrome; no installation or extra page access. | Install and pin the extension, then grant the permissions shown by Chrome. |
| Capture | Viewport, full-size page, area, node and device-oriented techniques. | The Chrome Web Store listing says it captures the current page in its entirety. |
| Output | Image download from Chrome’s screenshot command. | The listing advertises image or PDF download. |
| Shortcut | Use DevTools shortcuts and the command menu. | The listing documents Alt+Shift+P. |
| Best fit | Occasional captures, debugging and sensitive pages. | Frequent full-page work when its workflow suits you. |
GoFullPage’s listing records version 8.9 on September 24, 2026, including a fix related to a new URL requirement in Chromium 153. Extension behavior and availability can change, so check the current Chrome Web Store listing, permissions and publisher before installing. A built-in DevTools workflow avoids giving another extension access to page content.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect screenshot
The screenshot command is missing
Make sure DevTools is open and focused, then use Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+P (macOS) and search for “screenshot.” If DevTools is docked in a very narrow panel, widen it or undock it so the More options menu is available. Chrome labels can change with releases; use the command menu’s current wording.

The page may use an inner scroll container, an infinite feed or content that appears only after interaction. Scroll the relevant container, activate “load more,” and capture the specific node or region. If the page changes continuously, there is no single stable end to capture; save a defined state instead.
Images are blank or missing
Wait for network activity to settle, reload without immediately capturing, and scroll through lazy-loaded sections. An image blocked by a login requirement, a privacy control, a failed request or an iframe policy may remain unavailable to Chrome’s renderer; capture the surrounding element or use the site’s own export when appropriate.

The result has duplicated headers or strange spacing
Sticky or fixed-position elements can be rendered at multiple scroll positions during a full-page capture. Temporarily hide the element in the Elements panel for a diagnostic capture, disable page animations, or use an element/viewport capture instead. Do not alter a production page permanently just to obtain an image.
The download is unexpectedly huge or fails
Full-page images can be extremely tall, especially at high device scale or with a long feed. Reduce the browser window’s device scale or capture a defined element/section. For documentation, split the page into logical sections rather than creating one unwieldy file.
A login, consent dialog or bot check blocks the page
Complete the legitimate sign-in or consent step in the browser and capture only content you are authorized to view. A bot-check page is not evidence of the underlying site; record that state separately if debugging access is the goal.

A screenshot can contain names, email addresses, order numbers, tokens, private messages and data loaded from third-party widgets. Before sharing it, crop or redact secrets and confirm that the URL bar, account menu and notifications are not visible. For confidential pages, the built-in DevTools method keeps the capture inside Chrome rather than adding an extension with access to page content. Follow the site’s terms, your organization’s policy and applicable copyright or privacy rules when distributing captures.

Automate the capture instead of using a laptop browser
For one or two images, DevTools is usually fastest. For a test suite, documentation pipeline or batch of URLs, an API gives you a repeatable request and a file you can process in code. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; its endpoint accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It can wait for a selector, delay or network idle, load lazy images for full-page captures, select an element by CSS selector, set viewport/device and retina options, run custom CSS or JavaScript, click before capture, hide selectors, block ads/trackers/requests/resource types, apply headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, set timezone or geolocation, resize images, cache with a chosen TTL, create signed image links, submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per call and expose usage and OpenAPI endpoints.
Or skip the browser setup
Use one GET request instead of configuring Chrome. The ScreenshotNeo documentation covers the request options; replace the example URL with the page you are allowed to capture.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the capture; each cleanup step can be switched off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Every plan includes all features: 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card, Starter is $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000 and Business $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get the 1,000 monthly screenshots without a card.
Which method should you use?
- One visible screen: use DevTools’ Capture screenshot.
- A long, mostly static page: use Capture a full size screenshot after lazy content has loaded.
- One component: inspect the node and capture the element.
- Repeated jobs or many URLs: use an API such as ScreenshotNeo so waits, cleanup, output format and billing status are explicit.
- Frequent manual full-page exports: evaluate a current extension listing such as GoFullPage, balancing convenience against permissions and changing compatibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Chrome have a single keyboard shortcut for a full-page screenshot?
Chrome does not use one universal screenshot key for this action. Open DevTools, press Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Shift+P on macOS, search for “screenshot,” and select the full-size command.
Can I capture a page that requires a login?
Yes, if you are authorized: sign in normally in Chrome, confirm that the required content is loaded, and protect the resulting image because it may contain private account data.
Why is my full-page screenshot different from what I see while scrolling?
Full-page capture re-renders the document across its scrollable height. Sticky elements, animations, lazy loading and inner scroll panels can therefore produce a different result; pause motion, load content first and capture a specific element when necessary.
What file type does Chrome DevTools save?
The built-in screenshot command downloads an image. If you need a PDF or automated format choices such as PNG, JPEG or WebP, use a workflow that supports that output, such as ScreenshotNeo.
