How to Fix the Figma MCP Server Startup Error

Figma MCP startup errors usually come from selecting the wrong server, using an unsupported client, skipping authorization, or starting the desktop server without an active Design file. First identify your MCP client, operating system, exact error text, and endpoint. https://mcp.figma.com/mcp is Figma’s hosted remote server; http://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp is the local desktop server. Follow the branch that matches your endpoint, then restart the client after changing its configuration.

Start by identifying the server that is failing

Figma offers two official MCP modes. The remote server is hosted by Figma and is the recommended choice for most users. The desktop server runs through the Figma desktop application and is intended for specific organization and enterprise requirements. Figma for Government supports the desktop server only, according to Figma’s documentation.

Diagnostic point Remote MCP server Desktop MCP server
Endpoint https://mcp.figma.com/mcp http://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp
Where it runs Figma’s hosted service Locally through the Figma desktop app
Desktop app required No Yes; the app and an active file must remain open
Setup Supported MCP client plus Figma authorization Enable the server in Dev Mode, then configure the client
Typical failure Unsupported client, wrong URL, or incomplete authorization Closed file, wrong mode, disabled server, or a local configuration conflict

Figma’s official setup and troubleshooting pages were current as accessed on September 29, 2026; client labels and availability can change. Keep the relevant Figma MCP introduction open while checking your client.

Fix a remote Figma MCP startup error

1. Confirm that your client is supported

Figma says only clients in its supported-client catalog can connect to the remote server. If your client is not listed, its MCP implementation may not complete Figma’s connection or authorization flow. A developer who wants to add a client can join Figma’s waitlist. Do not spend time changing desktop-server settings when the failing endpoint is remote.

2. Use the exact remote endpoint

Replace a copied, shortened, or older address with https://mcp.figma.com/mcp. The client must support HTTP or Streamable HTTP MCP connections. A typical VS Code-style entry, based on Figma’s documented setup, looks like this:

{
  "servers": {
    "figma": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.figma.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Your client may use a different top-level property or file name; preserve its schema while keeping the URL and HTTP transport correct.

3. Complete Figma authorization

Adding the URL does not finish setup. Start the server from the client, follow Figma’s sign-in and authorization page, choose Allow Access when prompted, and wait for the client to report that the server is connected or authorized. If the browser window was blocked, closed, or opened under the wrong Figma account, repeat the authorization action from the client.

Figma’s remote-server instructions are at https://developers.figma.com/docs/figma-mcp-server/remote-server-installation/.

4. Handle Codex-specific setup

Figma documents a Codex setup that includes installing its Figma plugin and authorizing access. If the plugin or expected tools do not appear, ask the Codex administrator whether third-party plugins are allowed and whether new tools require approval. This is an administrator policy issue, not evidence that the Figma endpoint is down. The Codex instructions are at Figma’s Codex and MCP guide.

Fix a desktop Figma MCP startup error

The local endpoint works only while the Figma desktop app is in the required state. Complete these steps in order:

  1. Open a Design file. Launch the current Figma desktop app and open or create a Figma Design file. A browser tab alone is not sufficient for the desktop server.
  2. Switch to Dev Mode. In the Figma desktop app, select Dev Mode. Figma documents Shift+D as the shortcut.
  3. Enable the MCP server. Open the inspect panel’s MCP section and turn on the desktop MCP server.
  4. Check the status. Wait for Figma to report that the server is enabled and running.
  5. Point the client to localhost. Configure the MCP client with http://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp, not the remote URL.
  6. Refresh the client. Restart or refresh the IDE or MCP client so it reads the desktop server’s tool list.

Figma’s complete desktop procedure is documented at https://developers.figma.com/docs/figma-mcp-server/local-server-installation/. If the app closes, the Design file changes, or Dev Mode is left, the local connection can disappear until those conditions are restored.

When the client connects but tools are missing

Check for a remote-versus-desktop conflict

If both endpoints are configured, the client can connect to the desktop server while silently omitting tools available only through the remote server, including use_figma and generate_figma_design. Temporarily disable one configuration, restart the client, and verify which endpoint it reports as connected. Choose the remote endpoint when you need the broadest feature set; choose desktop only when your organization requires the local workflow.

Refresh a stale tool list

Figma’s Code to Canvas documentation notes that tools are read at startup and that the desktop app can automatically run its local server when open. After editing an MCP configuration, fully restart or refresh the client rather than relying on an already-open session. A stale list can look like a missing-tool failure even though the new server configuration is valid.

Separate Figma errors from model-provider errors

The message We’re having trouble connecting to the model provider does not necessarily mean that Figma MCP failed. Figma says this message usually means the AI assistant cannot reach its model or has timed out. Retry the request or wait for the model connection to recover before changing the MCP endpoint.

Apply Figma’s restart sequence

When the endpoint, authorization, and desktop state look correct, restart both the Figma app (for desktop mode) and the IDE or MCP client. Then reopen the file, re-enable the desktop server if necessary, and reconnect. Figma lists this sequence among its troubleshooting steps at https://developers.figma.com/docs/figma-mcp-server/tools-not-loading/.

Configuration and reliability checks

Record the facts before changing anything

  • The exact error text, including capitalization.
  • The MCP client and its version or release channel.
  • Your operating system and whether Figma is running in a browser or the desktop app.
  • The configured endpoint, copied exactly.
  • Whether a Design file is open and Dev Mode is selected for desktop mode.
  • Whether the client shows connected, authorized, or an empty tool list.

These details distinguish an authentication problem from a local-process problem and prevent switching endpoints at random.

Choose the mode that matches your dependency tolerance

Figma strongly recommends the remote server for most users because it connects directly to Figma’s hosted endpoint without requiring the desktop app. It also provides the broadest feature set. Desktop mode is appropriate when a specific organization or enterprise workflow requires the local app, and it is the supported option for Figma for Government. Remote mode removes the need to keep an app and file open; desktop mode gives you a localhost connection but inherits the app’s state.

Understand cost and evidence limits

Figma’s setup and troubleshooting documentation does not publish a startup-failure rate, affected-user count, or reliability percentage. The fix therefore depends on endpoint, client support, authorization, and application state rather than a statistical threshold. The documented steps do not call for buying hardware, replacing a computer, or purchasing a subscription as a startup fix.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean image of a Figma page, documentation page, or error screen while diagnosing an integration, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF with one request. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; and its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/. Replace the target URL with the page you need to capture:

Frequently Asked Questions

How current are these Figma MCP troubleshooting steps?

They reflect Figma’s official setup and troubleshooting pages accessed on September 29, 2026. Because client interfaces and supported-client lists can change, use the linked Figma pages to confirm current labels.

Does Figma publish a percentage for MCP startup failures?

No failure-rate or affected-user statistic is provided in the official setup and troubleshooting material covered here, so a percentage would not be reliable.
