For a hero that appears through a theme template, use the Site Editor if your site has an active block theme; assigning a featured image alone does not ensure it will appear as a hero.
Add a hero image to a page with the Cover block
The Cover block is WordPress’s built-in banner-style option: it can show an image, video, or background color with text over it. Use it when the image belongs in the content of a particular page or post.
- Open the page or post in the block editor. Click the plus inserter and search for Cover, or type
/coverin a paragraph block and press Enter. - Choose the background image. Select Upload to add a file from your device or Media Library to use an image already on the site. You can also use the page or post’s featured image as the Cover background.
- Add any overlay content. Insert a heading, paragraph, button, or other block inside the Cover block. Use the block toolbar’s content-position controls to place the text where it belongs.
- Set the block’s shape and image display. Drag the resize handle or enter a minimum height in Dimensions. The toolbar also provides content-position, full-height, crop, and replace controls. Choose an available image resolution—Thumbnail, Medium, Large, or Full Size—from the resolution control.
- Make the text readable. Adjust the overlay color and opacity so the copy has sufficient contrast against the image.
- Save or update the page and preview it at the sizes where visitors will see it. Check that the crop, text placement, and readability work in the actual layout.
Choose the right WordPress image approach

Use an Image block when you do not need an overlay
For an image that should sit in the page without text on top, insert an Image block by typing /image or using the inserter. Choose Upload or Media Library, or provide an image URL. WordPress cautions that an externally hosted image can disappear if its source is moved, deleted, or no longer shared. Uploading a copy to your Media Library avoids depending on that external URL remaining available.
If you decide the image needs overlay text, select the Image block’s Add text over image toolbar action to turn it into a Cover block.
Set a featured image—and understand what it does
To assign a featured image, open the page or post settings sidebar using the gear icon, find Featured image, and select an image from the Media Library or upload one. Use the same setting to replace or remove it.

A featured image is not automatically a hero. The theme decides how it uses featured images: it may show one in a particular template, display it differently, or not show it in the way you expect. If you specifically want an image background in one page’s content, add a Cover block and choose the featured image as its background instead.
Make the hero accessible and legible
- Give informative images alternative text. Add alt text that conveys relevant information when the image contributes meaning beyond the surrounding copy. For a purely decorative image, WordPress’s Image block guidance says its alt field may be left empty.
- Check overlay contrast. Use the Cover block’s overlay color and opacity controls to keep text readable over the image.
- Keep the image’s role in mind. A hero image does not replace a clear page heading or readable text; visitors should still be able to understand the page’s purpose.
Build a template-level hero with the Site Editor
If you want a hero controlled by a theme template rather than inserted into one page’s content, the route depends on your theme. WordPress’s Site Editor is available only when an installed block theme is active. Open Appearance > Editor, then edit a supported template and add a Post Featured Image block where the featured image should appear. Assign featured images to the relevant posts or pages as needed.

This template approach differs from inserting a Cover block in a page: it changes the template’s layout, and the result depends on the template and theme. WordPress documentation describes the Post Featured Image block for supported templates; it does not mean every theme displays a featured image as a hero by default.
