If by “Windows capture” you mean Xbox Game Bar recording, turn off its enable switch in Settings. That setting does not disable Snipping Tool, third-party screen recorders, or webcam access. Windows treats game recording, screenshots and camera privacy as separate controls, and Microsoft’s current guidance does not document one universal switch that blocks every capture route.
Start by identifying what is being captured: the screen or an app with Game Bar, a screenshot or video snip with Snipping Tool, or video from a camera. The controls below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11 unless a step is marked Windows 11-only.
Choose the capture feature you want to stop

Menu labels can change after Windows updates. If a label differs, use the Settings search box for “Xbox Game Bar,” “Snipping Tool,” or “Camera.” Microsoft explains how to navigate Settings and its changing categories in Understand and explore Windows Settings.
Disable Xbox Game Bar recording
Xbox Game Bar is the built-in route that records a game or app. Microsoft documents Win+G to open its controls and Win+Alt+R to start or stop recording; clips are saved in VideosCaptures. Turn off the feature’s enable control to prevent the Game Bar from being available through that route.

- Open Settings from the Start menu or press Win+I.
- Use the Settings search field and enter Xbox Game Bar or Xbox.
- Open the result for the Game Bar settings. Depending on your Windows release, it may be under Gaming.
- Turn off the switch that enables Xbox Game Bar (the wording may be “Enable Xbox Game Bar” or similar).
- Close Settings and test Win+G. The Game Bar controls should no longer be enabled by that switch.
These steps disable the documented Game Bar feature, not every program capable of capturing the display. A managed PC can also have organization-specific policies or security software that are outside these consumer settings.

Stop or restrict Snipping Tool captures
Snipping Tool is independent of Xbox Game Bar. Microsoft documents both screenshots and video snips for Windows 10 and Windows 11; a video snip can be started with the Record control or Win+Shift+R. Turning off Game Bar will not remove this capability.
What Windows documents
The official Snipping Tool guidance explains how to select a snip mode, capture an area and record video. It does not establish a single Windows setting that blocks all Snipping Tool screenshots and recordings. Read the current feature details at Microsoft’s Snipping Tool support page.

Practical controls
- To stop accidental captures, avoid the Snipping Tool shortcuts and unpin or uninstall the app only if your Windows edition offers those options and your organization permits them.
- To prevent a user from capturing information on a managed device, use an organization-approved application-control or data-loss-prevention policy. Those controls are not the same as the consumer Game Bar switch and must be configured by an administrator.
- Do not promise that disabling a background permission blocks Snipping Tool; desktop applications are not governed by the general background-app list.
Disable webcam capture (Windows 11)
If “capture” means a camera image rather than the screen, use Windows 11’s camera controls. Camera settings are stored for each camera and user account and do not synchronize across devices. They do not stop screenshots or screen recordings.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices, then Cameras.
- Choose the detected camera you want to manage.
- Review the camera’s settings and the app permissions that control access. Disable access where the available control matches your privacy goal.
For the supported Windows 11 camera-management workflow, see Manage cameras with Camera settings in Windows 11. A camera privacy setting cannot prevent an app from taking a screenshot of the desktop.
Why background-app settings are not a capture switch
Windows background-app permissions decide whether eligible apps may run in the background. They are not a screen-recording firewall. Microsoft states that desktop apps do not appear in the general background-app list and are not affected by that setting; desktop applications must be controlled through their own settings. Consequently, disabling background activity does not reliably stop Game Bar, Snipping Tool or desktop capture software. See Windows background apps and your privacy.
Check what is still able to capture
- After changing Game Bar, press Win+G and confirm that its controls no longer open as an enabled feature.
- Check the Start menu for Snipping Tool and remember that Win+Shift+S can invoke a screenshot workflow on supported systems.
- Review installed screen-recording, meeting, remote-support and graphics-driver utilities. Each has its own permissions and policies.
- If the concern is a webcam, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras on Windows 11 and review each camera separately.
- On a work or school computer, ask the administrator which endpoint, application-control or data-loss-prevention policy applies. Consumer Settings cannot establish that every capture path is blocked.
Common problems and fixes
The Xbox switch is missing
Search Settings for “Xbox Game Bar” and check the Gaming category. Windows releases and organization policies can present different labels or hide controls. If the feature is managed by your organization, contact the administrator rather than changing unrelated privacy settings.

Win+G still opens something
Another utility may be handling the shortcut, or the Game Bar setting may not have changed for the current account. Reopen the Xbox settings, verify the enable switch, sign out and back in if your device requires it, and inspect other gaming or graphics utilities.
Snipping Tool still records
This is expected when only Game Bar was disabled: Snipping Tool is a separate feature. Its documented screenshot and video controls are not governed by the Game Bar switch.
A camera remains visible to an app
Camera controls are per camera and user account. Select the specific camera in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras, then review the app permission involved. A camera permission change will not affect screen capture.
A desktop app ignores background restrictions
That behavior follows Microsoft’s scope for background-app permissions. Desktop apps are not covered by the general list, so use the desktop app’s own setting or an administrator-managed policy.

What “disable Windows capture” can and cannot mean
You can turn off the Xbox Game Bar enable switch, manage Windows 11 camera access, and treat Snipping Tool as a separate application. The documented consumer settings do not provide one universal control that guarantees screenshots, recordings, camera video and third-party capture are all blocked. Use the narrowest feature control for a personal PC and an administrator-managed policy when the requirement is device-wide prevention.

Can I block every Windows screenshot with one Settings switch?
Microsoft’s documented consumer guidance does not establish a universal switch for all capture methods. Device administrators may use additional managed policies.
Does disabling camera access stop screen recording?
No. Camera privacy controls apply to webcam video, not screenshots or recordings of the display.
Are Windows 10 and Windows 11 controls identical?
