App Screenshot Examples: How to Plan Store Screenshots That Show Your App Clearly

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Strong app-store screenshots show the real app, make one benefit clear in each frame, and tell a short story in the order people scan. Start with the feature that best explains why someone should try the app, then show the main workflow and the details that make it useful. Store rules differ: Apple allows up to 10 screenshots per product page, while Google Play requires at least four screenshots for app listings.

What good app screenshot examples have in common

A useful screenshot is more than a polished screen placed in a device frame. It should help a prospective user understand what the app does and what they can accomplish with it. Apple calls screenshots one of the most effective ways to communicate an app’s value and recommends leading with the best features. Apple’s product-page guidance also emphasizes legible text and keeping focal points within safe areas.

  • Real interface: Show current, representative in-app screens. Google Play requires screenshots to depict the actual in-app experience. Google Play’s graphic asset requirements
  • One clear job per frame: A frame might explain onboarding, demonstrate the main task, reveal a differentiating feature, show a useful result, or highlight an accessibility or trust cue.
  • A coherent sequence: Arrange frames so a viewer can follow the product’s value without having to infer how the screens fit together.
  • Readable composition: Keep captions concise and key interface elements large enough to see at store-preview size. Leave room around important content so it does not feel cramped or get clipped in a device presentation.

These are design recommendations, not a guarantee of more downloads. No quantified conversion-rate result is established here for a particular screenshot style.

Examples of screenshot sequences by app type

Use these as planning patterns, not as permission to fabricate screens. Each frame should match a real screen or real state in the shipped app.

Task or productivity app

  1. Promise: Show the key outcome, such as a clear view of tasks due today.
  2. Core workflow: Show how a user creates, organizes, or completes a task.
  3. Differentiator: Present a real feature such as collaboration or a useful filter, if the app supports it.
  4. Result: Show what completion or progress looks like.
  5. Supporting detail: Use a later frame for a genuine feature such as reminders or accessibility controls.

Finance or utility app

  1. Lead with the user benefit: Show the main dashboard or task the app is built around, with realistic data that does not expose private information.
  2. Demonstrate the action: Show the real steps for checking a balance, tracking usage, or completing another central task.
  3. Make a useful feature visible: Choose a real alert, breakdown, or control that distinguishes the product.
  4. Show a comprehensible outcome: Use a real result screen and avoid implying unsupported guarantees.

Content, learning, or fitness app

  1. Show what users can explore or learn: Put a representative library, lesson, or plan near the beginning.
  2. Show the experience itself: Use an actual lesson, playback, or workout screen rather than a generic promotional visual.
  3. Show progress or personalization: Include it only if the app genuinely offers that feature.
  4. Close on a helpful next step: A real saved item, completed session, or other meaningful state can finish the sequence.

Across categories, the opening frames matter most to scanning. Google Play recommends prioritizing UI in the first three uploads, and Apple recommends leading with the strongest features. Avoid making the first images a sequence of abstract slogans that delays showing the app.

How many screenshots do you need?

Store Quantity Practical implication
Apple App Store Up to 10 screenshots per product page. Apple Developer guidance Use the available sequence to show a beginning, middle, and end of the user journey; prioritize the strongest feature early.
Google Play app listing At least 4 screenshots, with minimum 1080-pixel resolution. Google Play Console Help Make the first three uploads especially representative of the core UI and value.

The right number for a particular app depends on how much needs to be explained without repetition. More frames are not automatically better: each should add a distinct, truthful piece of information.

Sizes, orientations, formats, and device targets

Apple App Store

App Store Connect accepts one to ten JPEG, JPG, or PNG screenshots, and dimensions depend on the device display target. Current examples include 1320×2868 pixels for a 6.9-inch iPhone portrait slot and 2064×2752 pixels for a 13-inch iPad portrait slot. These are examples for those specific targets, not universal Apple dimensions. Check the current specification for every device class your app supports. Apple’s screenshot specifications

Google Play

For app listings, Google requires at least four screenshots at minimum 1080-pixel resolution. Supported example orientations are 9:16 portrait at least 1080×1920 pixels, or 16:9 landscape at least 1920×1080 pixels. Screenshots must show the actual in-app experience. Plan variants, not just exports

Apple associates screenshot sets with a locale and display target. Missing required assets can cause a submission error, so plan device-class and language variants for the app’s supported markets and devices. Apple’s screenshot specifications A screenshot set prepared for one phone size or language should not be assumed to satisfy every required destination.

A practical workflow for making store screenshots

  1. Write the product promise in one sentence. Choose the user need the opening screenshot should answer, rather than beginning with a list of every feature.
  2. Map the story. Assign one distinct job to each planned frame: promise, core workflow, differentiator, outcome, and relevant supporting details.
  3. Capture real app states. Use current screens and realistic sample content. Remove private data and avoid showing features, results, or interface states the shipped app does not provide.
  4. Compose around the UI. Keep the interface prominent. Add short explanatory text only when it clarifies what the viewer is seeing; preserve legibility and safe space around focal points.
  5. Prepare store-specific assets. Make the Apple device-target and locale sets your submission requires, and the Google Play images in an allowed orientation and resolution.
  6. Review at small size. Check that text and UI remain readable when the image is viewed as a store thumbnail. Confirm that no important content is clipped or obscured.
  7. Validate the listing requirements before upload. Recheck current store specifications for formats, dimensions, quantity, device targets, and locales. Store requirements can change.

Capture screenshots from a web app for your store set

If the product includes a web interface, a browser capture can help you document a real screen for design review or asset preparation. A browser screenshot is a source capture, not automatically a compliant store asset: you may still need to compose it, size it, localize it, and verify that it represents the actual app experience required by the store.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

  • Leading with a slogan instead of the product: Move the strongest real feature or screen into the first image, then use concise text to explain its benefit.
  • Showing the same screen repeatedly: Give each frame a different purpose; remove frames that add no new information.
  • Using a decorative mockup that hides the interface: Make the actual in-app experience visible, especially for Google Play assets.
  • Making caption text too small: Reduce the copy and test the image at the size people will encounter in a store listing.
  • Using one export for every device target: Apple dimensions are device-specific. Prepare the required target variants rather than assuming one image fits every slot.
  • Forgetting language and display variants: Associate assets with the relevant locale and device target, and make sure required sets are present before submission.
  • Promising an outcome the app cannot guarantee: Describe what the interface does, not an unsupported result or performance claim.

FAQ

Can app-store screenshots include captions or promotional text?

Yes, but keep text short and legible, and make sure it supports rather than obscures the real interface. Apple recommends concise text that enhances the visual. Google Play still requires screenshots to depict the actual in-app experience.

Should iPhone and iPad screenshots be the same?

Not necessarily. Apple uses device-specific screenshot dimensions and associates sets with display targets. Use captures that show the app appropriately on each supported class and verify the required assets for the submission.

Do screenshot examples prove that a design will increase installs?

No. A polished example can illustrate a clear presentation, but it does not establish a quantified install or conversion lift. Evaluate variants with your own product data if you need to compare performance.
