To retrieve an archived page, open the Wayback Machine, enter the page’s original URL (or its domain if you do not know the page URL), choose Browse History, select a capture date, and inspect the replay. If a page or image is missing, search its original URL separately. A Wayback capture is a replay of material the Internet Archive saved—not a guarantee of a complete, downloadable copy of the website.
Find and open an archived page
- Go to web.archive.org or the Wayback Machine at archive.org/web.
- Enter the original page URL, including its path, if you know it. For example, search for
example.com/about/teamrather than onlyexample.comwhen that specific page is what you need. If you know only the domain, enter that and explore the site’s captures. - Select Browse History. Choose a year, then a date with a capture on the calendar or timeline. The Internet Archive Help Center describes capture dots by response: blue for 2xx, green for 3xx, orange for 4xx, and red for 5xx. A blue capture is usually the best starting point.
- Open the snapshot and inspect the page. Check its title, text, links, and capture date; do not assume that a page that looks old is being served from the date you intended.
Save the replay URL if you need to return to the same capture or cite it. Its timestamp is in the form YYYYMMDDhhmmss (year, month, day, hour, minute, second). For example, 20000229123340 represents 29 February 2000 at 12:33:40. Preserve the page’s original title, author, and publication date separately if they are visible; the replay timestamp is when the archive captured it, not necessarily when the page was published.
Retrieve a deep page, image, or document
Start with the complete original URL of the resource, not just the site’s home page. The Wayback Machine can have a capture of an individual article, image, PDF, or other asset even when the site’s main page does not make it easy to find.
- On the replayed page, copy the original destination URL of the missing link or asset. If necessary, inspect the link address in your browser or use a page’s text and context to identify the original URL.
- Paste that original URL into the Wayback Machine search box and browse its available captures.
- Choose a capture and verify both its timestamp and the resource itself. A saved page may link to an image or document that was never captured.
The Internet Archive Help Center recommends entering the image or link URL directly to check whether it is in the Wayback Machine. This direct lookup is often more useful than repeatedly trying the same broken link from a replay.

Check that you are viewing the intended capture
Wayback may use a nearby available capture when the exact linked page was not saved on the date you selected. If no archived version of a linked URL is available, the archive may send the request to the live web. After following a link, inspect the replay URL’s timestamp and confirm that the destination is still under the archive’s replay address. A page that loads is not necessarily a page captured on the date shown by the parent page.
- Confirm the timestamp: read the
YYYYMMDDhhmmsssegment in the replay URL after navigation, not only the date on the calendar you started from. - Check the host and path: confirm that you are still viewing a Wayback replay, rather than a live-site URL.
- Verify the content: compare the page’s subject and visible details with what you sought. A nearby capture can be useful, but it is not the same as an exact-date version.
Why a page may be absent or incomplete
No capture appears
A blank calendar or unsuccessful lookup does not prove that a page never existed. The crawler may not have discovered it, the page may have been inaccessible or password-protected, or robots rules or a site-owner request may have prevented or removed archiving. Try the exact page URL as well as the domain, and check likely alternate URL forms if you know them (such as whether the original site used www). The Internet Archive says it cannot guarantee that a particular site has been or will be archived.
Images are missing or gray
The page and its images are separate URLs, and the image file may not have been captured. Search for the image’s original URL directly. A page can therefore replay while some of its visual content does not.
Controls or interactions do not work
Archived pages are not necessarily functioning replicas. Forms, queries, JavaScript-driven interfaces, server-side image maps, and features that keep contacting the original server can fail or behave differently. Simple HTML is generally easier to archive than a page whose behavior depends on a live application or external services.

A link opens a different date or the live site
The linked destination may have no capture for the selected date, so Wayback can substitute a nearby capture or, if there is no archived version, fetch the live page. Check the new URL and timestamp as described above, then search the destination URL directly for its own captures.
Can you download the whole archived website?
Finding a capture is not the same as recovering a full website backup. The public Save Page Now flow saves the page you submit, with images and CSS where available; it does not save that page’s outlinks, crawl every directory, or package an entire site for restoration. The Internet Archive says, “It does not save multiple pages, directories or entire sites.” Do not treat a successful page replay as evidence that every page, asset, or piece of site functionality was preserved.
If you want to retain a particular page, use its archived replay URL as a reference and save any files that are available to you individually. This can help preserve material you can access, but it does not recreate missing pages or guarantee a working site. The Internet Archive no longer offers to package lost websites as backups for the general public.
Use Wayback’s APIs to look up captures

This is a discovery aid, not a complete inventory: the documented response gives a single closest result, and a result for a page does not establish that all of its links or assets were preserved. For broader snapshot queries, the Internet Archive documents Memento interfaces; for complex capture-data queries, filtering, or analysis, it documents CDX. Check the relevant developer documentation before relying on endpoint behavior in a production integration; the published developer material is dated 2018–2022.

The Internet Archive’s official browser extension is another option for checking a page’s snapshot count and last-save information, and its repository describes checks after 4xx/5xx errors. It is software for interacting with the archive, not a way to restore a complete website.
