The rectangle is the clickable area; text that merely looks like a URL is not automatically active.
What “live link” means in a PDF
A live link is an interactive hotspot embedded in the PDF. It can sit over ordinary words, an image, a button graphic, or a printed URL. Readers click the defined area rather than the PDF simply recognizing what the text looks like.
For a website, the link action is Open a web page. Acrobat also provides actions for an internal page view, opening a file, or running a custom action. Choose the action that matches the destination instead of treating every link as a web address.
Make selected text or an object clickable in Acrobat
- Open the PDF. Launch the document in the desktop edition of Adobe Acrobat. You need editing permission for the file; a secured or digitally signed PDF may restrict changes.
- Open the link tool. Choose Edit, then under the add-content controls select Link > Add or edit a link. In some current layouts, Link is inside More. Older Acrobat releases can show a different menu path.
- Draw the hotspot. Drag a rectangle around the words, image, or other object that should respond to a click. Keep the rectangle aligned with the visible cue and do not cover neighboring text.
- Set appearance and action. In the dialog, choose a border or other appearance if useful, then select Open a web page for an external site.
- Enter the destination. Continue through the prompts, type or select the complete URL, and confirm. Include the scheme, such as
https://, when you enter the address. - Save and test. Save the PDF, switch to Acrobat’s link or hand tool, and click the hotspot. Confirm that the intended browser page opens and that the whole intended area responds.
Choose the right rectangle
The rectangle, not the underlying characters, controls where the link works. A descriptive phrase such as “open the application page” can therefore be clickable even when no URL is printed. Make the area large enough for comfortable clicking, but not so large that it captures adjacent links or body text.

Set a recognizable appearance
Acrobat lets you adjust link type, line style, highlight behavior, thickness, and color. A visible border or clearly worded anchor helps readers discover the link. An invisible rectangle is available when the document’s design already signals interactivity, but test it carefully because readers may not know where to click.
Automatically link URL text already printed in the PDF
When a document contains many visible URL strings, Acrobat can convert them in one operation. Use Edit > Link > Auto-create links from URLs. The dialog lets you process every page or specify a page range. In newer interfaces, the command may be located in the corresponding link menu rather than at that exact path.
Automatic linking is efficient for literal addresses such as https://example.com. It is not a substitute for a custom anchor such as “visit the support center”; create that anchor with the manual rectangle workflow.
| Situation | Best method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One button, image, or descriptive phrase | Add or edit a link | You control the exact clickable area and destination. |
| Many printed URL strings | Auto-create links from URLs | Acrobat can process all pages or a selected range. |
| Jump within the same PDF | Go to a page view | The action opens a chosen page or view instead of a website. |
| Destination PDF will be reorganized | Named destination | The target remains stable when pages are inserted or deleted. |
Link to another page or PDF
Jump to a page in the current document
Create a link rectangle, then choose Go to a page view instead of Open a web page. Select the destination page and view, confirm the action, save, and test it. If the document’s page order changes later, retest every internal link.

Use a named destination for a changing target PDF
For a link into another PDF that is likely to gain or lose pages, a named destination is more robust than a raw page number. A page-number link can point to the wrong content after reorganization; a named destination identifies the intended location. Create or select the destination in the target document, assign the link to it, and test again after revisions.
Edit, resize, or remove a link
Use Acrobat’s link tool to select the existing rectangle. You can move or resize it when only part of the words responds, open its properties to change the action or appearance, or delete it and draw a replacement. After any edit, save a new copy or version and test from a reopened PDF, not only from the editing view.
Testing checklist before you distribute the PDF
- Open the saved file in a normal PDF viewer, not just the authoring canvas.
- Click the center and edges of each hotspot to check its full bounds.
- Confirm an external link opens the intended URL and an internal link opens the intended page or view.
- Check that nearby text or adjacent links do not trigger accidentally.
- Re-test after replacing pages, changing layout, or editing the destination PDF.
- Test on the viewer your recipients are expected to use; menu labels differ between Acrobat versions, but the saved hotspot should remain part of the PDF.
Troubleshooting common PDF link problems
The URL is visible but does nothing
Printed text is not necessarily an active annotation. Draw a rectangle with Add or edit a link, choose Open a web page, and save. If many literal URLs are present, run Auto-create links from URLs for all pages or the needed range.
Only part of the words responds
Select the link rectangle with the link tool and resize it to cover the complete visible phrase. Avoid extending it into a neighboring link or line.

The wrong page or website opens
Open the link’s properties, inspect the selected action and destination, correct them, save, and test again. A stale internal page number is a sign that a named destination may be more appropriate for a changing target PDF.
The link controls are missing or in a different place
Current Acrobat documentation places the command under Edit and, in some layouts, More. Older releases expose a different route. Search Acrobat’s link tools for Add or edit a link and use the equivalent command in your installed edition.
The PDF cannot be edited
A password, permission setting, or digital signature can prevent annotations. Obtain an editable copy or the required permissions from the document owner. Do not attempt to defeat security controls.
The link works in Acrobat but not after sharing
Reopen the exact saved file and test it in another supported viewer. If the destination depends on a local file, a custom action, or restricted content, recipients may not have the same access; an ordinary HTTPS web destination is generally the clearest choice for a public document.

If what you need is a clean image or PDF capture of a web page—not an editable PDF annotation—ScreenshotNeo can return it from one request. It accepts the cookie or consent banner as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Example request (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same capture in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Or in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Every plan includes the capture options, PDF controls, custom waits and scripts, device and viewport settings, and bulk capture. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.

Can I make an image clickable without visible URL text?
Yes. Draw the link rectangle over the image and assign the appropriate action. The object does not need to contain printed URL characters.
Should I use a visible border?
Use a visible style when readers need help discovering the hotspot. An invisible rectangle is suitable only when surrounding design already makes the target obvious.

Will a named destination survive edits?
Adobe documents named destinations as unaffected by pages being added or deleted in the target document, unlike a link tied directly to a page number. Retest after major revisions anyway.
