An extension can collect image elements and image URLs from the loaded page, but it cannot guarantee every visual asset on a site. Lazy content, login-only media, canvas drawings, protected viewers, and hotlink restrictions may keep files out of the results.
What an image downloader actually finds
Most browser downloaders scan the active document for image elements and image URLs that the page has exposed. The result is a reviewable inventory, not a forensic copy of every byte used by the website.
- Usually found: visible
<img>files, responsive-image URLs, and image links already present in the loaded document. - Often missed: images injected only after scrolling, content behind a login, assets inside protected viewers, graphics painted on a canvas, video frames, and files blocked by authentication or anti-hotlink rules.
- Possible duplicates: a page may expose the same picture as a thumbnail, a responsive-size variant, and an original file.
Let the page finish loading and scroll through sections that use lazy loading before scanning. If a gallery loads more items only when you interact with it, perform that interaction first.
Chrome: download selected images from one page
- Open the target page. Wait for images to load, then scroll through the page so lazy-loaded sections you need are requested.
- Install from the official Chrome Web Store. A listing such as Image Downloader can browse pictures on the active webpage, filter by size, dimensions, or URL, remove duplicates, rename files, save to a subfolder, and download in the background. Check the publisher and requested permissions before installing.
- Run the extension. Keep the target tab active, click the extension icon, and wait for its thumbnail grid or results panel.
- Filter before downloading. Set minimum dimensions or file size to remove icons, tracking pixels, and tiny UI images. Use URL filters to include the gallery’s host and exclude analytics or avatar paths. Turn on duplicate removal when offered.
- Choose the files. Review thumbnails and select only the images you need. When a result exposes both a thumbnail and a source URL, select the original or largest version.
- Set download behavior. Choose the default Downloads folder or a named subfolder. In Chrome’s download settings, set a predictable location and decide whether the browser should ask where to save each file.
- Start and verify. Begin the batch, then open the destination folder. Compare a few files’ dimensions and formats with the extension’s preview; a successful download can still be a low-resolution derivative.
Getting the original instead of a thumbnail
Thumbnail URLs commonly contain size parameters, derivative directories, or short dimensions. Prefer a tool that displays the source URL, such as Imageye, and copy that URL when it identifies an original. If only one URL is shown, open it in a new tab and inspect its intrinsic dimensions before downloading the whole set. Do not assume that changing a filename or deleting a query string will produce an original; the server may reject the altered request or return a different file.

Firefox: download one, several, or all images
- Open the page and scroll through every section you want included.
- Install Mozilla’s Image Downloader add-on from Firefox Add-ons. It supports downloading one, multiple, or all discovered images and can convert WebP, JPG, or PNG files.
- Click the add-on, review the image list, and select individual files or the complete set.
- Use dimensions, URL information, and the preview to avoid icons and duplicates; select a source URL when the add-on exposes one.
- Choose the output format only when conversion is useful. Keeping the original format avoids an unnecessary quality change.
- Confirm the files in Firefox’s configured download directory and open a sample from each format you requested.
Choosing an image-downloader extension

Chrome controls extension access to pages and resources. Install only from the official store, inspect permissions, and run a scanner on pages you trust. The Image Downloader vendor documentation says its extension reads page content when you click its icon; an unrelated request for broad access deserves scrutiny.
Why “all images” may not be possible
Lazy loading and infinite scroll
Many sites request an image only when it approaches the viewport. Scroll slowly through the page, expand accordions and galleries, and wait for network activity to settle before opening the extension. For infinite feeds, scan in batches and record which sections you have covered.
Authentication and protected media
A scanner normally operates with the access your browser has. Login-only images, expiring URLs, signed requests, or a protected viewer may not be available as ordinary downloadable files. Do not attempt to bypass access controls; ask the site owner for an authorized export.
Canvas, CSS, and video
A chart drawn on a canvas has no image URL for a typical extension to collect. CSS background images may be discoverable only if the tool inspects stylesheets, and a video is a stream rather than a set of still images. Use the site’s export feature or obtain permission for another capture method.

Hotlink protection and bot checks
A URL copied from the page can fail when requested outside the original session. The server may require cookies, a referrer, authorization, or a short-lived signature. A failed request is not evidence that the file never existed.
File names, folders, and verification
- Create a project-specific subfolder before a large batch, such as
site-name_2026-09-30. - Keep the original extension unless you intentionally convert formats.
- After downloading, sort by dimensions and file size to find thumbnails and duplicates.
- Open several files, including the largest and smallest, to check that they are complete images rather than HTML error pages saved with an image extension.
- Preserve a text note containing the page URL, retrieval date, creator, and license information.
Background downloading is convenient, but browser limits, unstable connections, and a server’s rate limits can interrupt a large queue. Split very large galleries into smaller selections and retry only the missing files.
Copyright, licenses, and responsible use
Downloading a file is not the same as receiving permission to republish it. The U.S. Copyright Office states: If you want to use someone else’s photo from the internet, you need to get permission.
Copyright owners generally control reproduction, distribution, adaptation, and public display of protected visual works. The technical ability to copy, capture, or save a work does not prove that the owner authorized distribution.

- Read the page’s license and the creator’s terms.
- Check whether a stock service imposes separate seat, editorial, attribution, or territory limits.
- Save the creator name, license text, and source URL with the file.
- When rights are unclear, ask the rights holder or choose an explicitly licensed or public-domain alternative.
Fair use has no automatic percentage, pixel count, or word-count safe harbor; the outcome depends on all circumstances. A personal download for reference and public redistribution are different uses, and the latter normally needs permission or a license.

Troubleshooting
The extension shows no images
Confirm the target tab is active, reload after the page finishes loading, disable a conflicting content blocker for that site, and scroll through lazy sections. If the content is inside a login or protected viewer, the extension may not have an ordinary image URL to read.
The list contains hundreds of tiny files
Raise the minimum width, height, or file-size filter; exclude known icon, avatar, sprite, and tracking URL paths; and enable duplicate removal. Review the thumbnails before selecting all.
Downloads are thumbnails
Open the result’s source URL, compare intrinsic dimensions, and choose the original or largest candidate. A responsive image may have several legitimate sizes, so select the one that matches your required output.

Open Chrome’s download settings, choose a default location, and turn off the option that asks for every file if that suits your workflow. Use a dedicated subfolder for the batch.

A file is an HTML error page
The URL may have expired or require cookies, authorization, or a referrer. Reopen the page, rescan, and download while the session is valid. Do not distribute a file until you have confirmed its format and rights.
The batch stops partway through
Retry in smaller groups, check available disk space, and respect the site’s rate limits. Record completed filenames so you do not repeatedly request the same assets.

Can I download images from a page I do not own?
You may be able to save technically accessible files, but reuse or redistribution requires the applicable permission or license.

Does converting WebP to JPG create a higher-quality image?
No. Conversion changes the format; it cannot restore detail that was absent from the downloaded source.
Should I select every result in a gallery?
Only after reviewing filters and thumbnails. Selecting everything commonly includes icons, duplicate derivatives, and tracking assets.
