To make a PDF navigation bookmark open a website, select the bookmark in Acrobat’s Bookmarks panel, open Properties, choose Actions, add the web-page action, enter the URL, and save the PDF. This is different from adding clickable text or a button on a page: a bookmark is an item in the navigation pane, while a page hyperlink is a rectangle drawn over visible PDF content.

What you are adding: a bookmark action, not a page hyperlink

Adobe defines a bookmark as “a link with representative text in the Bookmarks panel in the navigation pane.” A bookmark can jump to a location in the same document, open a web page, or perform another action. The procedure below applies to the Acrobat desktop editing interface documented by Adobe. Menu wording can vary by Acrobat release or language; Adobe’s action guide was updated June 10, 2026.

Goal Use this Acrobat feature Where the user clicks
Open a website from the navigation pane Bookmark action A bookmark in the Bookmarks panel
Make visible text, an icon, or a button clickable Page link A rectangular area drawn on the PDF page

If you need the second result, use Acrobat’s page-link workflow instead of changing a bookmark.

Before you start

  • Open the PDF in Acrobat’s editing interface, not merely a basic viewer.
  • Have the complete destination URL, including https:// where supported by the site.
  • Make sure the file is not protected against editing. Adobe notes that bookmarks can be added only when document security permits it.
  • Save a copy if the PDF is shared or digitally signed; changing navigation or actions can affect signatures and controlled workflows.

How to add a URL to an existing PDF bookmark

  1. Open the Bookmarks panel

Open the PDF in Acrobat and display the Bookmarks panel in the navigation pane. Select the bookmark that should open the website. Select the exact bookmark level: a parent bookmark and one of its child bookmarks can have different actions.

  2. Open bookmark Properties

Open the selected bookmark’s context menu or options and choose Properties. In the dialog, select the Actions tab. Adobe documents this Properties > Actions path for bookmark actions.

  3. Add the web-page action

In Select Action, choose the action that opens a web page, then select Add. Acrobat opens a configuration dialog for the selected action.

  4. Enter and confirm the URL

Enter the destination address in the URL field shown by your Acrobat release. The exact field label and dialog layout are not identical in every release or locale, so use the label displayed in your installation. Confirm the action when finished.

  5. Save both dialogs and the PDF

Confirm the action, then confirm the bookmark’s Properties dialog. Save the PDF. If you use Save As, choose a new filename so the original remains available for rollback.

  6. Test the bookmark

Click the bookmark in the Bookmarks panel and verify that the intended page opens in the expected browser or Acrobat web-handling flow. Test from a saved, reopened copy as well; that confirms the action was written to the file rather than left only in the current editing session.

Adobe’s official bookmark documentation covers bookmark creation, destinations, and action options in Page thumbnails and bookmarks in PDFs. The action-specific sequence is documented in Add actions to PDF elements in Acrobat.

Create a bookmark first, then attach the URL

If the bookmark does not exist, navigate to the desired location or select the text or area you want represented, open the Bookmarks panel’s options menu, and create a new bookmark. Name it clearly, such as “Product documentation” or “Support portal.” Then follow Properties > Actions to add the web-page action. A bookmark’s visible name is what readers see in the navigation pane; it does not have to match the website’s page title.

Do not confuse a bookmark’s initial destination with its URL action. A destination points to a location in the current PDF. The web-page action runs when the bookmark is selected and can take the reader outside the document. If both behaviors are configured, review the action list and its order carefully.

Adding a clickable link on the PDF page instead

For visible text, a logo, or a button, use Acrobat’s link tool:

  1. Choose the command to add or edit a link.
  2. Draw the rectangular active area over the page content.
  3. Choose the option to open a web page.
  4. Enter the URL, confirm the link settings, and save.

Adobe’s page-link instructions, updated September 23, 2025, are at Add links to PDFs in Acrobat. This creates a page annotation; it does not add an item to the Bookmarks panel.

Multiple actions, ordering, and safe maintenance

Acrobat permits more than one action on a bookmark. In the Actions tab, additional actions can be added and reordered with Up and Down controls. For a normal external link, keep the list simple: one web-page action is easier to audit and less likely to trigger an unexpected result. If a bookmark already contains actions, inspect the full list before adding another one.

  • Use descriptive names: “API reference (opens website)” is clearer than “Link 1.”
  • Check the final URL: remove accidental spaces and verify the domain and path.
  • Retest after edits: changing a bookmark destination does not necessarily change its web action.
  • Preserve accessibility: keep a logical bookmark hierarchy and meaningful labels so keyboard and assistive-technology users can navigate it.
  • Consider trust prompts: Acrobat or a browser may warn before opening an external address, especially in managed environments. Do not disable security controls merely to avoid a warning.

Troubleshooting

Properties has no Actions tab

Confirm that a bookmark—not a page thumbnail, annotation, or ordinary text selection—is selected. Also confirm that the PDF is open in Acrobat’s editing interface. Adobe’s documentation does not establish identical controls across every Acrobat plan, platform, web interface, mobile app, or localized build, so an unavailable tab may reflect the installed product or permissions.

Acrobat will not let me create or edit the bookmark

Check the document’s security settings and permissions. Adobe explicitly notes that bookmarks can be added only when document security allows it. If the PDF is certified, signed, password-protected, or distributed under rights management, obtain an editable source or the owner’s permitted copy rather than trying to bypass protection.

The bookmark still jumps inside the PDF

Reopen its Properties and inspect the Actions list. You may have changed the bookmark’s destination instead of adding the web-page action, or an earlier action may run first. Remove an unintended action or move the web action to the required position, then save and reopen the file.

The website does not open

Copy the URL from the action dialog and test it in a browser. Check for a typo, a missing protocol, a page that requires authentication, or a network policy that blocks external sites. A correctly configured PDF cannot make a private or unavailable website publicly reachable.

The URL works before saving but not after reopening

Save the PDF after confirming both the action and Properties dialogs, then reopen that saved file. If the document is stored in a managed or synchronized location, save locally first to rule out a stale copy. A digitally signed document may also reject or invalidate post-signature changes.

I need a visible link, not a navigation bookmark

Use the page-link workflow described above. Draw the clickable region over the text or control; editing the Bookmarks panel will not create a visible page target.

If your next task is generating a clean image or PDF of the linked destination for documentation, previews, or an automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one request. It is separate from Acrobat’s bookmark editor: it does not insert the bookmark, but it can produce the destination asset after you have configured the PDF.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Every plan includes the features; 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for options such as full-page capture, CSS-selector element capture, device and retina settings, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, headers, cookies, geolocation, PDF page ranges, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, and bulk capture.

FAQ

Can a bookmark open any URL?

It can point to an external web page, subject to the destination’s availability and your organization’s Acrobat or network security policies.

Can I use the same URL action on several bookmarks?

Yes. Configure each selected bookmark separately, or duplicate an appropriately configured bookmark and then adjust its label and destination as needed.

Will this work in Acrobat Reader?

The cited instructions describe Acrobat’s editing workflow and do not establish identical feature availability in every Reader, web, mobile, or localized edition. Check the menus in the edition installed on your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a bookmark open a URL in a specific browser?

The PDF action requests that the web page be opened; which browser handles it is normally determined by the operating system, Acrobat settings, and organizational policy.

Does changing a bookmark’s name change its URL?

No. The label shown in the Bookmarks panel and the action configured in Properties are separate settings.

Can I undo a wrong bookmark action?

Before saving, cancel the dialogs. After saving, restore a backup or reopen Properties, remove or edit the incorrect action, and save again.

The Bottom Line

For an external website in Acrobat’s navigation pane, use the selected bookmark’s Properties > Actions dialog, add the web-page action, confirm the URL, save, and test the reopened PDF. Use the Link tool instead when the clickable target should appear on the page itself.
