To create smart product search in WooCommerce, add a search extension, let it index your catalog, place a live search field on the storefront, configure useful filters, and tune how results are ranked. WooCommerce Product Search supports that workflow with automatic indexing, live blocks and shortcodes, filters, and relevance weights. If shoppers search by meaning rather than the words in product listings, compare its keyword search with the official AI Semantic Search extension’s semantic and hybrid modes.
Choose what “smart search” should do
Start with the kinds of searches your customers actually make. A store where people know a product name or SKU has different needs from one where shoppers browse by size, material, brand, or price. Intent-based search—such as finding a “lightweight bag for a weekend trip”—may require semantic retrieval rather than keyword matching alone.
- Exact lookup: Match product names and SKUs reliably.
- Product discovery: Let shoppers narrow results by categories, attributes, price, and other catalog details.
- Forgiving search: Account for misspellings and synonyms.
- Intent search: Retrieve products related to a shopper’s meaning, even when the query does not repeat listing terms.
Before changing settings, write down representative queries for each job. Keep them as a test set so you can compare results after adjusting relevance, importing products, or rebuilding the index.
Pick a search approach
These options differ in retrieval method and storefront capabilities. Check current compatibility, pricing, support, and terms before installing; those details can change.
#1 Best Overall
| Option | Search approach and features | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| WooCommerce Product Search | Official extension with automatic indexing, live search blocks and shortcodes, filters, relevance weights, reports, cache support, and developer APIs. | Confirm compatibility with your WordPress, WooCommerce, and theme versions, along with current pricing and extension requirements. |
| AI Semantic Search for WooCommerce | Official AI extension offering Semantic (AI only), Keyword (classic), and Hybrid (combined) modes, with configurable product text for embeddings and instant or submit-only search behavior. | Review its current compatibility, requirements, and how its modes and embedding settings fit your catalog and queries. |
| Seomedseb Smart Search | Third-party listing describes typo tolerance, grouped AJAX autocomplete, synonyms, and include/exclude rules. | Check current update and support activity, compatibility, and partner status. |
| Searchanise | Third-party listing describes autocomplete, filters, analytics, merchandising, recommendations, and catalog synchronization. | Verify current pricing, data-processing terms, compatibility, and partner status. |
A useful comparison is whether an option covers the fields your catalog relies on, exposes the filters shoppers need, and gives you enough visibility into indexing and ranking to troubleshoot results. Avoid assuming that “AI” guarantees better matches: evaluate each approach against your own test queries.
Install and index WooCommerce Product Search
- Download the extension: Get the ZIP from your WooCommerce account, as described in the official overview.
- Upload and activate it: In WordPress Admin, go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, select the ZIP, install, then activate it.
- Allow initialization: The extension initializes its search engine and index automatically. Initial indexing can take minutes or hours depending on catalog size and server capacity; new and updated content is normally indexed within seconds, according to the setup documentation.
- Check index completion: Monitor the index percentage and wait for 100% before judging search quality. The FAQ warns that an incomplete index can lead to partial or empty results.
Put live search and filters on the storefront
Add a live search field
Use the Product Search Field block if your theme supports blocks, or add the [woocommerce_product_search] shortcode in a suitable page or template. The field can show matching product titles, short descriptions, prices, and add-to-cart controls while a customer types. See the extension’s shortcodes documentation for placement and available components.
Rank #2
Add filters that reflect your catalog
Use live filters for the distinctions customers care about—such as attributes, categories, price, tags, brands, ratings, sale status, or stock—and provide a reset control. Pair filters with the product display block or shortcode so results can update dynamically. Only expose facets that are populated and meaningful: a filter with missing or inconsistent product data can make discovery harder rather than easier.
Tune relevance and catalog coverage
In WooCommerce Product Search, enable and adjust weights under WooCommerce → Settings → Search. The documented fields are title, short description or excerpt, content, tags, categories, global attributes, and SKU. Product- and category-specific weights can promote or demote matches. The extension’s weights documentation explains the controls.

If exact SKU searches matter, ensure SKU contributes appropriately; if shoppers search by product type or attributes, give those fields suitable weight. If results do not change after editing weights, flush active caches before concluding that the setting had no effect.
Know what data can be searched
Supported standard product data, taxonomies, attributes, brands, and vendors can be indexed through supported integrations. Custom fields require developer configuration through the indexer filter hook. WooCommerce Product Search supports global attributes, but its filters do not support custom product attributes, according to its FAQ. If a critical detail lives in custom metadata, confirm the implementation path before relying on it for search or facets.
Rank #4
Use semantic search for intent-based queries
AI Semantic Search for WooCommerce provides three modes: Semantic (AI only), Keyword (classic), and Hybrid (combined). Hybrid is a sensible baseline to compare when customers use both exact terms and intent phrases. Configure which product text contributes to embeddings, then choose whether results appear instantly or only after the shopper submits a query. The AI Semantic Search documentation describes these options.
Semantic retrieval is not a substitute for checking catalog coverage and ranking. Test it on realistic phrases and compare its results with keyword and hybrid modes. Do not assume that intent matching will understand every query or outperform a well-tuned keyword setup in every store.

For a custom theme, application, or bespoke component, WooCommerce Product Search documents a Product Search API, hooks, and REST API. Use the API documentation to select an integration point rather than treating a storefront field as a drop-in API. Confirm the interface’s compatibility with your theme and any cache or application layers.
Test before launch and after changes
Run the same query set against the storefront, not just the configuration screen. Check that results are relevant, filters combine correctly, and shoppers can complete the purchase path.
- Exact and partial product names, plus SKUs.
- Category, attribute, brand, and other facet terms used in your catalog.
- Synonyms, common misspellings, and intent-based phrases if you have configured them.
- Out-of-stock products and queries with no matching products.
- Multiple filters applied together, clearing filters, and reset behavior.
- Mobile layout, live-result behavior, and add-to-cart controls.
Repeat these checks after catalog imports, plugin updates, and index rebuilds. If results are unexpectedly missing, first check whether indexing has reached 100%; then inspect field coverage, relevance weights, active caches, and the search mode in use.
