“Screenshot size” can mean three different things: how much of the screen you capture, the pixel dimensions of the saved image, or how large a picture appears inside a document. For a smaller or tighter screenshot, press Windows key + Shift + S and make a rectangular snip. To crop an existing image, use Snipping Tool or Photos. To change saved-image dimensions, open the capture in Paint from Snipping Tool; Microsoft identifies Paint as the sizing route, but its current support instructions do not specify exact pixel-entry steps. If you only need to change how large the image appears in Word, adjust its Height and Width there.
Choose what “screenshot size” means
Before changing anything, identify the result you need. Cropping and selecting a capture region change what is included in the picture. Resizing changes the dimensions of the saved image. Sizing a picture in Word changes how it appears on the page; the Word guidance does not establish that this edits the original image file.
| Your goal | Use | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Remove edges or capture only part of the screen | Snipping Tool rectangular snip or crop; Photos crop | The visible area or framing |
| Change the dimensions of the image file | Open the capture in Paint from Snipping Tool | The saved image, using Paint’s sizing controls |
| Make the picture appear larger or smaller in a document | Word’s Height and Width controls | The picture object in the document |
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions cover capture, cropping, and opening a snip in Paint for sizing: Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots. For cropping, the Photos editing guidance also describes manual cropping and preset aspect ratios.
Capture a smaller area with Snipping Tool
If you have not taken the screenshot yet, selecting only the needed region is usually the simplest way to make the result tighter. This changes the capture area, rather than resizing a full-screen image after the fact.

- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The Snipping Tool capture overlay opens.
- Choose the rectangular snip option, then drag around the area you want to keep.
- When the snip opens in Snipping Tool, select Ctrl + S to save it, or Ctrl + C to copy it for pasting into another app.
Microsoft documents the keyboard shortcut and rectangular capture method, as well as saving and copying: Snipping Tool instructions and Copy the window or screen contents.
Crop an existing snip
If you already captured too much, open the image in Snipping Tool and use its crop control to trim the edges. Cropping is appropriate when you want to remove surrounding content or improve framing. It is not the same as setting a particular output width and height in pixels.
Resize the saved image with Paint
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions say that with a capture open, select Edit > Edit with Paint to use Paint’s features for sizing and other enhancements. This is the documented route when you need to change the image itself rather than only its crop or appearance in a document.
- Open the screenshot in Snipping Tool.
- Select Edit > Edit with Paint.
- Use the image-sizing controls available in your Paint interface, then save the edited image.
Paint’s exact controls can vary with the version available on your PC. Microsoft’s cited Snipping Tool guidance confirms the Paint handoff for sizing, but does not document a current, version-specific sequence for entering exact pixel values. If you must meet a precise width or height, check the controls shown in your installed Paint rather than assuming a particular menu or dialog.

Changing pixel dimensions and cropping solve different problems. If the image includes unwanted content, crop it. If the framing is right but the output dimensions need to change, use Paint’s sizing controls. A smaller pixel size may also mean less detail when the image is enlarged later, so keep an unedited copy when the original capture may be useful.
Crop or reframe in Photos
Photos is a useful option when your aim is to trim or reframe a saved screenshot. Microsoft says Photos supports manual crop adjustments and preset aspect ratios.
- Open the screenshot in Photos.
- Select Edit image.
- Open the crop controls, adjust the crop manually or choose a preset aspect ratio, and save the result.
Use a preset ratio when the shape of the image matters—for example, when you need a wide or square frame. A crop can change the composition and resulting image area, but do not treat it as proof that the output has a particular pixel width or height. See Microsoft’s Photos editing guidance.
Change a screenshot’s display size in Word
If the screenshot is already in a Word document and you only want it to take up more or less page space, select the picture and enter measurements in the Height and Width boxes. To change width and height independently, clear Lock aspect ratio.

This adjusts the picture object in Word. The cited guidance explains sizing a picture in the document; it does not say that doing so resizes the original screenshot file. If you need a resized image to use elsewhere, edit and save the image itself instead. Microsoft’s steps are in Change the size of a picture, shape, text box, or WordArt in Word.
Which method should you use?
- You have not captured the screen yet: use Windows key + Shift + S and drag a rectangular selection around only the content needed.
- You already have a screenshot with extra borders or surrounding content: crop it in Snipping Tool or Photos.
- You need different saved-image dimensions: open the capture in Paint and use its sizing controls. Confirm the controls in your Paint version if exact pixel values matter.
- You only need a different on-page size in Word: adjust Height and Width on the selected picture.
Microsoft’s support pages cover Windows 10 and Windows 11 for Snipping Tool. The same page describes a “Perfect screenshot” feature for Windows 11 AI+ PCs / Copilot+ PCs; it is an optional eligible-device feature, not a general resizing requirement. Microsoft also notes Paint availability across several Windows versions and Paint 3D as a Windows 10 option; that does not establish Paint 3D as the current choice on Windows 11. See Microsoft’s Office crop guidance for its Paint and Paint 3D context.

If what you need is a screenshot of a webpage—not a capture of your Windows desktop—ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one API request. It cannot capture arbitrary local desktop content. Its clean-shot process accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents.
Install a recent cURL, then replace the example URL and put your API key in the request. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and response details.

Troubleshooting
The shortcut does not capture the whole screen
Windows key + Shift + S opens the capture overlay; it is not a command to save a full-screen image automatically. Choose the desired snip type and select the area. For a screenshot of the full screen or a particular window, consult Microsoft’s window and screen capture instructions.
The screenshot looks smaller, but its dimensions did not change
You may have changed its display size in Word or altered its crop, not resized the saved file. Use Paint’s sizing controls for the image file, and verify the saved result in the application where you plan to use it.
The crop is the wrong shape
In Photos, use a suitable preset aspect ratio or adjust the crop manually. A crop controls framing; it does not guarantee a particular pixel dimension.

You cannot find the same Paint control described elsewhere
Paint’s interface can differ by Windows version. The Microsoft Snipping Tool page establishes the Edit > Edit with Paint route, but not a universal current sequence for entering exact pixel dimensions. Use the sizing controls present in your installation, and avoid relying on steps for Paint 3D unless that is the app you actually have.

If you changed width and height independently, select the picture and keep Lock aspect ratio enabled when you want to preserve its proportions. Clear it only when you intentionally need independent dimensions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing a screenshot’s size mean cropping it?
Not necessarily. Cropping changes the visible area; resizing changes image dimensions, while Word sizing changes how the picture appears in the document.
Can I make a screenshot smaller before taking it?
Yes. Press Windows key + Shift + S and use a rectangular snip to select only the area you need.
