You cannot make a publicly displayed WordPress image impossible to copy: a browser must receive the image data, and visitors can capture it with screenshots or other tools. You can, however, make casual copying less convenient, preserve attribution, prevent other sites from consuming your bandwidth, and act when someone republishes your work.
Those are separate problems. Saving a file is different from hotlinking it (embedding your image URL on another site), and both differ from unauthorized reuse. An image appearing elsewhere is not automatically infringement: it may be licensed, in the public domain, or covered by a legal exception. Use these four layers to reduce risk without promising complete protection.
1. Watermark valuable images before publishing
A visible watermark can keep your name or brand attached to a copied preview and make unattributed reuse less convenient. It does not prevent downloading, and someone may crop or remove it. Treat it as a deterrent and attribution aid, not a lock.
Make the watermark useful without ruining the image
- Use a consistent name, logo, or domain and a semi-transparent treatment.
- Place it over a meaningful area rather than only in a corner, where it is easy to crop. Keep it clear of details viewers need to assess.
- Keep an unwatermarked original in private storage. Publish a separate preview or web-sized derivative, and provide clean, high-resolution files only through a controlled delivery process.
- Do not make a watermark the only protection for a client proof, product image, or licensed download.
You can add watermarks in an image editor before uploading, or use a gallery workflow that applies them to displayed copies. The Envira Gallery WordPress listing advertises watermarking and gallery controls; check whether a chosen workflow also leaves original Media Library files or CDN URLs publicly accessible. A watermark on a gallery preview does not necessarily cover every image size or direct file URL.

Heavy marks can make artwork or product details hard to evaluate, while small corner marks are easy to remove. Use previews and licensed-download versions where possible instead of obscuring every image.
2. Add selective deterrents to casual copying
WordPress plugins or custom scripts can disable an image’s right-click menu, prevent dragging, or block common save actions. These controls act in the visitor’s browser; they do not secure the underlying file. A visitor can still use developer tools, inspect network requests, open a direct image URL, use an extension, disable JavaScript, or take a screenshot. A WordPress support response also notes that basic right-click protection does not stop browser extensions or screenshots.

Limit the friction
- Apply controls to selected high-value galleries rather than automatically disabling normal behavior across the whole site.
- Do not block keyboard navigation, text selection, or assistive-technology workflows site-wide. Test focus, gallery controls, captions, zoom, and mobile behavior.
- Check that overlays do not intercept links or make images unusable on touch devices.
- Inspect the public page and its image URLs; a plugin may protect the displayed preview while a full-size original remains exposed.
Use this layer only if the deterrent is worth the inconvenience to legitimate visitors. It cannot prevent screen capture or remove copies already cached or downloaded.
3. Block hotlinking to protect bandwidth
Hotlinking happens when another site embeds an image using a URL on your server, so each visitor to that site requests the image from your hosting or CDN. Blocking those requests can reduce bandwidth use, but it does not stop someone from downloading your image and rehosting their own copy. Hotlinking itself is not proof of copyright infringement; it may also be authorized.

Enable Cloudflare Hotlink Protection and test it
- Open the Cloudflare Hotlink Protection documentation and sign in to the Cloudflare dashboard.
- Select your website, then look under Security Settings or Scrape Shield for Hotlink Protection. Cloudflare documents both locations, depending on dashboard layout.
- Turn on the setting, then test images on your own site and from external contexts: image search, social previews, RSS feeds, email, partner pages, and mobile devices.
- If an approved use breaks, add a narrow exception or exclude the relevant assets, then retest after clearing applicable caches.
Cloudflare’s documentation says the feature checks whether an image request came from another site, allows visitors on your own domain to view and download images, and can affect display on Google Images, Pinterest, and Facebook. Its documented supported extensions are GIF, ICO, JPG, JPEG, and PNG; verify behavior for WebP, AVIF, SVG, or other formats rather than assuming they are covered. The documentation also describes exceptions through configuration rules and a hotlink-ok directory.
Plan exceptions for assets you intentionally share, such as email logos, RSS images, public embeds, partner materials, or images used by an app. Cloudflare notes that requests with a blank referrer are allowed in its documented behavior, so this is a bandwidth control, not a comprehensive access-control boundary. Test your actual setup before relying on it.

Apache sites may also use server rules based on the HTTP_REFERER header, but syntax and behavior depend on the server. Do not paste an untested rule into production: an overly broad rule can break legitimate image delivery or trigger errors.
4. Monitor for copies and respond with evidence
Prevention cannot catch every downloaded, rehosted, or altered copy. Search periodically for high-value images using reverse-image search, search-engine image results, marketplace and social-platform searches, or an image-monitoring service. WordPress.com’s content-protection guide also suggests searching for copied content and using alerts or monitoring tools.

Preserve evidence before contacting anyone
- Save the page URL, infringing image URL, screenshots showing the image in context, and the date you found it.
- Keep the original source file, project or export history, publication date, and available metadata.
- Save relevant license terms, contracts, invoices, and correspondence. These help establish authorship, ownership, and permissions.
Choose a proportionate response
- Identify the publisher and decide whether you want removal, attribution, a paid license, or more than one remedy. If you want a retroactive license, state its terms clearly; do not accidentally imply permission through a vague request.
- Contact the site owner or platform. If that does not resolve the issue, find the host, marketplace, or platform’s abuse or copyright process.
- For U.S. cases, consider a DMCA takedown notice to the relevant online service provider. The U.S. Copyright Office says a notice should identify the copyrighted work and the allegedly infringing material and its location; include your contact information, the required good-faith and accuracy statements, a statement of authority under penalty of perjury, and a physical or electronic signature. A notice is not a universal command that every alleged infringer must immediately comply with.
- For repeated, commercial, or high-value infringement, consider advice from a copyright attorney or an enforcement service. The right next step depends on ownership, license terms, jurisdiction, timing, and the facts.
U.S. legal context: Copyright generally begins automatically when an original work is fixed in a tangible form, such as an original photograph; that does not mean the person who uploaded an image necessarily owns it. Registration is not required before sending a DMCA notice, but the U.S. Copyright Office says registration or refusal is generally required before suing over infringement of a U.S. work. Registration can also affect eligibility for certain remedies. See the Office’s pages on what copyright is and Section 512 and takedown notices. Copyright rules and procedures differ outside the United States; seek local advice for a dispute elsewhere.
Choose controls for the problem you actually have

Common problems to check after setup
Hotlink protection breaks legitimate images
Missing images in RSS, social previews, email, partner embeds, or mobile apps may indicate an exception is needed. Temporarily disable the feature to confirm the cause, identify the affected asset or request, add a narrow exception, clear relevant caches, and test again before re-enabling protection.
Copy controls make the site harder to use
If keyboard navigation, menus, lightboxes, gallery controls, or text selection stop working, narrow the control to image elements or remove global keyboard interception. Test with keyboard-only navigation and assistive technology rather than assuming that a page still works because it looks normal.
The original file is still public
WordPress image workflows can expose multiple sizes and attachment URLs. Inspect the page, full-size links, upload paths, and CDN URLs from a logged-out browser. A visible preview restriction does not prove that the original or another derivative is private.
