Windows’ built-in Snipping Tool is the simplest method for preserving one visible frame from YouTube. It works with any browser because it captures the screen area rather than depending on a particular YouTube player control.
- Open the video in your Windows browser and move the playhead to the moment you need.
- Pause playback. Pausing keeps the image stable while you select the capture region.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Microsoft documents this shortcut as the command for opening Snipping Tool capture mode. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide covers the available capture and editing controls.
- Choose the rectangular snip and drag from one corner of the video to the opposite corner. Keep the browser tabs, address bar, page margins and player controls outside the selection when possible.
- Select the Snipping Tool notification that appears. Review the image, crop or annotate it if needed, choose Save, and select a file name, folder and format.
If you need the controls visible—for example, to document the timestamp—include them in the rectangle. For a clean-looking still, wait until the controls fade before pressing the shortcut, or crop them out in the Snipping Tool editor.
Keyboard alternatives for a full-screen capture

Use a player-level screenshot extension

According to that listing, the current frame can be saved as a file, copied to the clipboard, or both. The listing showed version 3.0.0 and an update date of December 26, 2024; store listings, versions and compatibility can change.

Why a YouTube screenshot can be black or blank
A blank result does not have one universal cause. First retry with the built-in Snipping Tool and select the visible video area again. That distinguishes a missed selection from a limitation in a player-level capture method.
- Snipping Tool works, extension is blank: the extension’s capture path may not be compatible with that player state.
- Both methods are blank: check that the video is actually visible and paused, reload the page, and try one more capture. Some protected video may be returned as a blank frame to browser capture; a Chrome Web Store listing for Screenshot for Youtube & Other Video Services explicitly warns about some protected-video cases.
- Only part of the picture is missing: repeat the rectangle selection, making sure it covers the player rather than a neighboring overlay or page element.
Neither a Windows shortcut nor a browser extension should be treated as a way to bypass content protection. If a capture remains blank, use the ordinary on-screen capture for content that is visibly available, or ask the rights holder for an authorized copy.
