Use a 16:9 canvas at 3840 × 2160 pixels for a standard YouTube video. For a YouTube Short, use a vertical 9:16 canvas at 2160 × 3840 pixels. YouTube lists a minimum width of 640 pixels for video thumbnails and a minimum height of 640 pixels for Shorts. Export the image as JPG or PNG, then upload it in YouTube Studio.
The exact limit depends on where you upload: a video thumbnail can be up to 50 MB on desktop and 2 MB in the YouTube mobile app. Custom thumbnails require a verified account.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations and limits in its YouTube Help guidance, accessed in 2026. The dimensions are not an independent quality benchmark: they are the platform’s current specification.
Choose the right canvas before you design
Standard videos: 16:9
Set your design document to 3840 × 2160 pixels. That is a 16:9 ratio (16 units wide for every 9 units high). A smaller image can still meet YouTube’s minimum if it is at least 640 pixels wide, but the recommended canvas gives you more room to keep text and faces sharp when the image is displayed at different sizes.

Shorts: 9:16
Set a Short thumbnail to 2160 × 3840 pixels, a 9:16 portrait canvas. The minimum is 640 pixels in height. Keep important text and subjects away from the extreme top and bottom edges because the interface can overlay controls and labels on vertical media.
Podcast playlists: 1:1
If you are setting artwork for a podcast playlist rather than a video or Short, YouTube recommends a square 1:1 image. The mobile podcast-thumbnail cap listed by YouTube is 10 MB; desktop podcast thumbnails are capped at 50 MB.
How to create the image at the correct size
- Open your image editor. Choose a new custom-size document rather than a social-media preset whose dimensions you cannot verify.
- Enter the pixel dimensions. Use 3840 × 2160 for a standard video, 2160 × 3840 for a Short, or 1:1 for podcast playlist artwork.
- Set the composition. Keep the main subject and essential words inside a comfortable margin. Check the design at a small preview size; a thumbnail is often seen much smaller than the original file.
- Export as JPG or PNG. YouTube names those formats in its guidance. If the exported file exceeds the relevant cap, reduce quality or dimensions while staying above the applicable minimum.
- Open the exported file and check its properties. Confirm the pixel dimensions, file type, and file size before uploading. This catches an accidental 1080 × 1920 export when you intended a 2160 × 3840 Short, or a file that is too large for mobile upload.
Upload or change a video thumbnail in YouTube Studio
For a standard video, use this desktop or mobile Studio workflow:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Content in the left menu.
- Choose the video whose thumbnail you want to add or replace.
- Open the video’s thumbnail controls. Under Thumbnail, choose Upload file.
- Select the JPG or PNG on your device.
- Select Save.
YouTube says the account must be verified before custom thumbnails are available. Changes can take a little time to appear in every location, so do not assume an unchanged preview immediately after saving means the upload failed. The official steps are documented at YouTube Help.

Upload a custom thumbnail for a Short
YouTube’s current Help instructions say custom Shorts thumbnails can be added only in YouTube Studio on a computer. Use the Shorts section in Content, open the Short’s thumbnail controls, upload the vertical image, and save it.
- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Choose Content, then open the Shorts section.
- Select the Short and open its thumbnail controls.
- Choose Upload file, select the 9:16 image, and select Save.
If you do not see the upload control, first confirm that you are using Studio on a computer and that the channel is verified.

What happens when a vertical video uses a 16:9 thumbnail?
YouTube says a vertical video with a 16:9 custom thumbnail can be shown as an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and Subscriptions. The custom thumbnail can still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms. This is why a landscape design is a poor substitute for a dedicated 9:16 Short thumbnail: viewers may see a different crop on major mobile discovery surfaces.
File formats, size limits and practical export choices
JPG versus PNG
YouTube lists JPG and PNG as example image formats. JPG usually produces a smaller file for photographic backgrounds; PNG can preserve crisp graphics and transparency in your source design. Whichever you choose, inspect the final file size against the device-specific cap before uploading.

The 2 MB mobile figure is especially easy to miss: an image that uploads successfully in Studio on a computer can be rejected by the mobile app. If your workflow must support both devices, export a compressed copy under 2 MB while retaining the required ratio and minimum dimension.
Verification, limits and policy checks
Account verification
Custom-thumbnail access requires a verified YouTube account. Verification is separate from choosing the image dimensions; changing the canvas size will not unlock the upload control.
Daily upload limits
YouTube can impose a daily custom-thumbnail upload limit. YouTube says the limit can vary by country or region and by channel history. If you have replaced many thumbnails in a short period, wait for the limit to reset rather than repeatedly submitting the same file.
Community Guidelines
A custom thumbnail must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube says a violating thumbnail can be rejected and can result in a strike; repeated violations can affect thumbnail privileges or the account. A dependable thumbnail design workflow
Build separate templates
Keep one 3840 × 2160 template for standard videos and one 2160 × 3840 template for Shorts. Do not merely rotate a landscape design: portrait layouts need different line breaks, subject placement and safe margins.
Check readability at display size
Zoom the finished image out until it resembles a small card in a feed. If the title becomes a block of indistinguishable pixels, shorten it or enlarge the key words. The source canvas can be large while the final viewing size is small.
Leave room for interface overlays
For vertical images, keep essential content away from the top and bottom edges. Test the design against a plain portrait preview so controls or labels do not cover the only important word or facial expression.
Keep an upload-ready copy
Save an editable master and a flattened JPG or PNG export. The master lets you change wording later without degrading the image; the flattened copy makes it clear which exact file was uploaded.

“Upload file” is missing
Check that the channel is verified. For a Short, confirm that you are in YouTube Studio on a computer and have opened the Shorts entry under Content. If the control is still absent, the account may be subject to a feature or policy restriction.
The file is rejected as too large
Check whether you are uploading from mobile. Re-export the image as a smaller JPG, remove unnecessary metadata, or lower the export quality until it is below 2 MB for a mobile video thumbnail. Desktop video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails have a 50 MB cap.

The image looks cropped or replaced on mobile Home
This is expected when a vertical video uses a 16:9 thumbnail: YouTube may generate a 4:5 version for Home, Explore and Subscriptions. Upload a separate 9:16 image for the Short instead of relying on the landscape frame.
The dimensions are below the minimum
Return to the editor and create a new document with the correct pixel dimensions. A 16:9 ratio alone is not enough if the image is less than 640 pixels wide; a 9:16 ratio alone is not enough if it is less than 640 pixels high.

Allow time for YouTube’s change to propagate. Check the video’s thumbnail controls again and refresh the relevant Studio or YouTube page before uploading repeatedly.
You reached a daily limit
Stop retrying for the moment. YouTube says daily custom-thumbnail limits vary by country or region and channel history, so another channel can have a different allowance. Try again after the limit resets.
The thumbnail was rejected or a strike was issued
Review the image against YouTube’s Community Guidelines and remove the violating material. Repeated violations can affect thumbnail privileges or the account.

Can the same thumbnail file be used for a regular video and a Short?
