Alamy is worth considering, but the answer depends on which side of the marketplace you are on. Contributors must weigh rights, exclusivity, variable pricing, commission tiers and the US$75 payout threshold. Buyers should compare image volume, permitted uses, rollover, seats, renewal and enhanced-license needs. The terms below are Alamy’s published conditions reviewed on September 30, 2026, not independent earnings or satisfaction benchmarks.
What Alamy offers in 2026
Alamy is both a stock-content marketplace for photographers and illustrators and a subscription service for image buyers. That creates two separate decisions: whether the contributor contract fits your rights and income expectations, and whether Alamy Open’s catalog and license scope fit a particular project.
Alamy says it can set content prices at its discretion. A displayed image price therefore is not a guaranteed contributor payout or necessarily the final amount charged to a customer; the final fee can vary with usage, customer agreements and discounts.
For contributors: how the 2026 contract works
Annual revenue tiers
The contributor contract defines a revenue year beginning September 1. Tier placement is based on net license fees for that year, and the tier applies to the following year. Bronze and Silver contributors can move upward during the year when thresholds are crossed, but refunds can push totals back below a threshold.

These are named contractual thresholds published by Alamy in 2026. They do not establish a typical sale rate, average contributor income or probability of reaching a tier.
Payment timing and deductions
Alamy’s contract says cleared funds are paid within 30 days of the first day of a month when the balance, after account debit balances, exceeds US$75 at the beginning of that month. If it does not exceed US$75, the balance carries forward. Currency conversion, deductions and applicable affiliate or provider fees can reduce the amount reported as payable; the contract describes a 15% affiliate/provider fee in the commission model where that deduction applies.
Rights, exclusivity and Novel Use
You are responsible for having the rights or permissions needed to submit content. Reaching the Platinum threshold does not make every file exclusive: the contract refers to qualifying Alamy-exclusive content for non-agency contributors.

Novel Use is optional, but it is a significant rights choice. If you grant that permission, clause 10.1 says Alamy may license content “at any price, by any method and for any use we feel appropriate,” including trials with potential customers, machine learning, prototypes or proof-of-concept projects, and high-volume, low-unit-price licenses. The same clause says that when Alamy makes no charge to the third party, you receive no payment; paid machine-learning licensing follows a payment mechanism set by Alamy. Permission can be ended during April through the relevant account page. Contributors concerned about training, testing or experimental uses should decide deliberately whether to opt in rather than treating Novel Use as a routine upload setting.

Upload requirements: do not rely on an old checklist
An Alamy quality-control PDF available at review time appears to date from roughly 2018. It describes a first submission of three images, DSLR or equivalent files, a minimum opened uncompressed size of 17 MB and rejection of mobile-phone images. Because that document may be obsolete, those points should not be treated as confirmed 2026 rules. Check the current contributor help and submission interface before preparing a batch; current mobile-phone eligibility was not established by the available documentation.
For buyers: what Alamy Open includes
Core subscription features
Alamy Open describes plans with unlimited seats, one-month rollover of unused assets and Smart Search. Plan content includes photographs, vectors, illustrations and 360 panoramas. Standard commercial and editorial licenses are included, while enhanced licenses are available separately for broader uses.

The documentation supplied for this review does not establish a single current price for every plan. Confirm the live price, monthly image allowance and exact license wording before purchase, especially when a project involves merchandise, advertising distribution, resale, templates, physical products or other uses that may require enhanced rights.
Which side of Alamy is a better fit?
Contributors should consider Alamy if
- You can accept variable sale values and do not need a predictable monthly income.
- You are comfortable reviewing exclusivity and Novel Use permissions at the file or account level.
- You can tolerate payments accumulating until the contractual threshold is met.
- You are prepared to maintain accurate captions, tags, permissions and rights documentation.
Buyers should consider Alamy Open if
- Your team needs multiple users rather than a single-seat account.
- Your monthly demand benefits from rollover instead of expiring unused assets immediately.
- You primarily need standard commercial or editorial rights and can purchase enhanced rights when a project requires them.
- The catalog’s mix of photos, vectors, illustrations and 360 panoramas matches your work.
Neither audience can make a sound value judgment from the subscription name alone. Contributors need to model their own upload volume and rights preferences; buyers need to match expected image use and volume to the current plan and license language.

Trustpilot contains individual contributor and customer reports, along with replies from Alamy. One contributor complained about low sale value; Alamy replied that captions and at least five tags are required, that the displayed image price is not necessarily the final sale fee, and that balances below the payout threshold accumulate. A separate customer described a disputed infringement demand and was invited to contact support.

Checks to make before signing up or uploading
- Read the current Contributor Terms and Conditions, including commission, deductions, exclusivity and Novel Use language.
- Confirm the current payout threshold and how refunds, debit balances and currency conversion affect cleared funds.
- Verify current quality-control and mobile-upload requirements in contributor help rather than relying on an older PDF.
- For a buyer account, list the intended uses for each project before selecting standard or enhanced licensing.
- Check the current plan’s image allowance, rollover rule, seat policy, renewal date and cancellation terms.
- Save the license wording and order records for commercially important or legally sensitive uses.
