Choose the right kind of screenshot
Use a full-page capture when you need one image containing the entire document, including content that is currently below the fold. A visible-area screenshot is appropriate only when you want what is on screen right now. Full-page capture is different from taking several overlapping screenshots and stitching them: the browser renders the page as one capture and saves or copies the result.
- Static article or document: choose full-page capture.
- A single chart, panel or image: capture the visible area or the specific element if your tool supports it.
- Long-term or repeated work: use a browser automation workflow or an API so the same URL and settings can be captured consistently.
Firefox: save the entire page
Menu method
- Open the page in Firefox and wait for its initial content to finish loading.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and select Take Screenshot.
- In the screenshot toolbar, select Save full page. Do not select Save visible; that option captures only the current viewport.
- Choose the download option to save a PNG, or choose copy to place the image on your clipboard.
Mozilla describes Firefox screenshots as supporting both visible parts of a page and full web pages, with options to copy or save the image. The exact appearance of the toolbar can vary slightly by Firefox release and operating system.
Keyboard shortcut
Open the same screenshot tool with Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS. Select Save full page, then download or copy the result.

Microsoft Edge: use Screenshot and full-page capture
- Open the target page in Edge.
- Open Screenshot from the page context menu or from Edge Settings. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Choose the full-page capture option rather than the visible-area option.
- Copy the result or save it to a file.
Edge’s full-page mode is intended for content that extends beyond the window. Microsoft notes that Screenshot availability and functionality can vary by device, market and browser version. If the command is absent, update Edge if your organization permits updates, then check whether the feature is enabled for your particular installation.
Firefox DevTools: a developer workflow
DevTools is useful when you need a command-line-style capture or want the control available beside other debugging tools.
Enable the whole-page button
- Open Firefox Developer Tools.
- Open the DevTools settings and find the screenshot controls.
- Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Click the new camera or screenshot button in the toolbox.
Use the Web Console helper
- Open the Web Console in Firefox DevTools.
- Run
:screenshot --fullpage. - Firefox captures content outside the current window bounds and saves the image using its screenshot workflow.
This route is convenient for developers who already have DevTools open, and it avoids hunting through the page context menu.
Chrome and other browsers
The evidence for this guide supports a Chrome extension route rather than a verified, current first-party Chrome menu workflow. The Chrome Web Store listing for GoFullPage records version 8.9 dated September 24, 2026. Install an extension only after reviewing its permissions, publisher, update history and your organization’s policy; extension behavior can vary with page security settings and browser updates.

Current first-party steps for Safari and Chrome are not established here, so menu labels and keyboard shortcuts should not be assumed. If your browser does not show a full-page command, use Firefox or Edge for a built-in workflow, or use an approved extension or automation service.
Before you capture: make long pages predictable
Load content that appears on demand
Some pages load images or text only after you scroll near them. Scroll through the page once before capturing so that content visibly triggered by scrolling has a chance to load. This is practical troubleshooting, not a guarantee: infinite-scroll feeds may continue adding items indefinitely, and a browser may stop at a page-defined limit.
Check nested scrolling areas
A page can contain a smaller panel with its own scrollbar. Full-page browser capture generally follows the document, not every independently scrolling panel. If the important content is inside a nested container, capture that panel separately or use a tool that can target an element.
Watch sticky headers and overlays
Sticky navigation, cookie dialogs, newsletter forms and chat widgets can cover content or appear repeatedly in a long image. Dismiss overlays before taking the screenshot. If a consent dialog returns after navigation or reload, accept or reject it as appropriate before capture.

Resize the browser to a sensible desktop or mobile width before capturing. Responsive layouts can reflow dramatically, changing line breaks and page height. Keep zoom at a known value if you need comparable captures.

Troubleshooting full-page captures
Only the visible viewport was saved
In Firefox, reopen Take Screenshot and choose Save full page, not Save visible. In Edge, select the full-page mode in Screenshot. A normal operating-system screenshot cannot include content outside the current screen.

The full-page option is missing
Check the browser and version. Edge explicitly qualifies feature availability by device, market and browser version. Firefox users can try the DevTools control or the :screenshot --fullpage helper instead.
Images or sections are blank
Scroll through the page first to trigger lazy loading, wait for network activity to settle, and capture again. Check whether the page requires a login, blocks automated rendering or places the missing content in a nested scroll container. A browser screenshot cannot overcome content that never loads or that your account cannot access.

There may be no fixed end. Capture after loading the specific range you need, or use a selector- or length-controlled automation workflow. Record the URL and approximate scroll position so another person can reproduce the boundary.
Sticky elements cover text
Dismiss consent, newsletter and chat overlays. If a sticky header still obscures content, change the viewport or temporarily hide the element with developer tools where you are authorized to modify the page. For automated captures, use a hide-selector or custom-CSS option.
The result is extremely tall or difficult to share
Save a PDF when the reader needs pagination, or resize and compress the image after capture. For API workflows, choose PNG for lossless text and UI detail, JPEG for smaller photographic files, or WebP when the receiving system supports it.
