LinkedIn Maximum Image Size in 2026: Pixel, File-Size and Format Limits

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single LinkedIn maximum image size. The limit depends on where you upload the image. A personal profile photo can be up to 7,680 × 4,320 pixels and 8 MB. A personal cover image is recommended at 1,584 × 396 pixels and must be under 8 MB. LinkedIn Page and Career Page images have a 3 MB maximum, with dimensions that vary by placement.

LinkedIn image limits at a glance

“Maximum size” can mean the pixel canvas, the file size in megabytes, or both. LinkedIn applies different rules to personal profiles, Pages and Page post previews.

Upload surface Dimensions or ratio File limit Formats Important behavior
Personal profile photo 400 × 400 through 7,680 × 4,320 pixels 8 MB maximum PNG or JPG Usually displayed as a square and may be cropped
Personal profile cover 1,584 × 396 pixels recommended Less than 8 MB JPG or PNG Display changes with browser window and screen resolution
LinkedIn Page or Career Page image Placement-specific; see table below 3 MB maximum PNG or JPEG LinkedIn may crop horizontally or vertically on different screens
Page post URL image 1.91:1 ratio; 1,200 × 627 pixels is the stated example Page-image 3 MB ceiling applies PNG or JPEG Under 200 pixels wide may appear only as a thumbnail

The personal profile-photo upload range and 8 MB ceiling come from LinkedIn Help. LinkedIn’s Page specification says all Page and Career Page images must be PNG or JPEG and no larger than 3 MB. The cover dimensions are recommendations where LinkedIn labels them as such, not universal canvas maxima.

Personal LinkedIn profile photo: 7,680 × 4,320 pixels and 8 MB

For a personal profile photo, LinkedIn accepts images from 400 × 400 up to 7,680 × 4,320 pixels, with a maximum file size of 8 MB. LinkedIn’s accepted formats for this upload are PNG and JPG; GIF is not supported on the profile-photo upload page.

What to export

  • Use a square source when possible, such as 1,200 × 1,200 pixels, so the face or logo survives LinkedIn’s circular presentation.
  • Keep the saved file at or below 8 MB. “Maximum file size is 8MB” is LinkedIn’s stated rule.
  • Leave space around the subject. A tightly framed face or wordmark can be clipped when LinkedIn applies its crop.
  • Use JPG for a photographic headshot and PNG when you need sharper flat graphics or transparency before upload.

The 7,680 × 4,320 figure is an upper upload boundary, not a recommendation to create a profile picture at that size. A very large image can take longer to upload and still be reduced for display.

Personal profile cover (banner) size

LinkedIn recommends 1,584 × 396 pixels for a personal profile cover. The file must be less than 8 MB and should be JPG or PNG.

Design around the crop

  • Keep names, URLs and logos away from all edges.
  • Do not place essential text where the profile photo and interface controls overlap.
  • Check the result at both a wide desktop window and a narrow mobile view.
  • If the banner looks blurry or pixelated, LinkedIn suggests using a larger source file; the displayed result varies with browser-window size and screen resolution.

LinkedIn publishes the 1,584 × 396 canvas as a recommendation rather than a separate larger maximum canvas. Staying below 8 MB remains the practical upload requirement.

LinkedIn Page and Career Page image specifications

Company Pages use a stricter 3 MB maximum for every image. Files must be PNG or JPEG. The official placement recommendations are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Page placement Recommended dimensions
Page logo 400 × 400 pixels
Page cover 4,200 × 700 pixels
Life tab main image 1,128 × 376 pixels
Life tab custom module 502 × 282 pixels
Life tab company photo 900 × 600 pixels

These are placement-specific recommendations, while the 3 MB figure is the Page and Career Page file ceiling. LinkedIn warns that images can be adjusted to fit different screens and may be cropped horizontally or vertically. Keep critical branding inside a generous safe area rather than flush with an edge.

Page post URL images

For an image generated from a URL shared in a LinkedIn Page post, LinkedIn’s guidance uses a 1.91:1 ratio, with 1,200 × 627 pixels as the example canvas. An image under 200 pixels wide can be rendered as a thumbnail. Export as PNG or JPEG and keep it within the Page image limit of 3 MB.

Why the ratio matters

A 1.91:1 canvas matches the preview shape LinkedIn describes. A different ratio may trigger letterboxing, cropping or a less prominent preview. Check the final URL preview after publishing because the source page’s metadata and LinkedIn’s rendering can affect what appears.

How to get a LinkedIn image under the upload limit

  1. Identify the surface. Decide whether the file is for a personal photo, personal cover, Page placement or Page URL preview. Do not apply the 8 MB personal limit to a Page image; Pages have a 3 MB ceiling.
  2. Set the canvas. Resize to 1,584 × 396 for a personal cover, 4,200 × 700 for a Page cover, or 1,200 × 627 for a Page URL image. For a profile photo, use a square canvas within LinkedIn’s stated range.
  3. Export in an accepted format. Use PNG or JPG for profile uploads and PNG or JPEG for Page images. Convert unsupported formats before uploading.
  4. Compress without destroying detail. Reduce JPG quality gradually, remove unnecessary metadata, or reduce pixel dimensions while preserving the required aspect ratio. Aim comfortably below the ceiling rather than exactly at it.
  5. Inspect the smallest screen. Verify that text and logos remain legible on a phone-sized view and that no important content sits at a crop edge.
  6. Upload and check the rendered result. If LinkedIn rejects the file, compress it further. If it uploads but appears soft, start from a larger source and export again.

Common upload problems and fixes

“The file is too large”

Check bytes, not just pixels. A 1,584 × 396 PNG with photographic content can exceed 8 MB, while a larger JPG may be smaller. For Pages, even a file below 8 MB fails if it is above 3 MB. Re-export as an appropriately compressed JPG or reduce dimensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The format is rejected

Use PNG or JPG for a personal profile upload and PNG or JPEG for a Page. GIF is not supported for the profile-photo upload page. Renaming a file extension does not convert its underlying format; export it again from an image editor.

The cover looks blurry

LinkedIn recommends using a larger source when a cover is blurry or pixelated. Start with the stated canvas or larger, avoid repeatedly recompressing the same file, and inspect at the browser width and screen resolution used by your audience.

Important content is cut off

Move text and logos inward, then preview on desktop and mobile. Page covers can be cropped horizontally or vertically to fit different screens, so an edge-to-edge layout is risky.

The image appears only as a thumbnail

For a Page URL image, LinkedIn says an image under 200 pixels wide may appear as a thumbnail. Supply a properly sized 1.91:1 image instead.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean reference screenshot of a LinkedIn page while checking how a banner or post preview appears, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; failed loads, bot checks, blank pages and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options. A direct call looks like this:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.linkedin.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://www.linkedin.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://www.linkedin.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

  • Company Page: use the placement’s recommended canvas and never exceed 3 MB.
  • Page URL preview: use 1,200 × 627 pixels (1.91:1) and avoid files narrower than 200 pixels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does LinkedIn have one maximum image size for every upload?

No. Personal profile uploads and Page or Career Page uploads have different byte limits and dimensions, so the correct value depends on the upload surface.

Is 7,680 × 4,320 the recommended LinkedIn profile-picture size?

No. It is the upper pixel boundary LinkedIn lists for the profile-photo upload range. A smaller square image is generally easier to frame and upload.

Can I upload a GIF as my LinkedIn profile photo?

LinkedIn’s profile-photo upload guidance lists PNG and JPG; GIF is not supported on that upload page.

The Bottom Line

For 2026, use 8 MB as the personal-profile ceiling and 3 MB as the Page/Career Page ceiling, then match the canvas to the placement: 1,584 × 396 for a personal cover, 4,200 × 700 for a Page cover, and 1,200 × 627 for a Page URL image.
