Bing may be reachable: GreatFire’s latest cited measurement found https://bing.com reachable on 27 September 2026, but that is a dated, address-specific observation rather than a guarantee for every network or Bing service. Baidu is the main domestic alternative, although search results and suggestions operate under China’s content rules and may be filtered.
Hong Kong and Macao have different network environments, so do not assume that a mainland-China result applies there.
Which search engines work in mainland China?
| Service | Reachability evidence | Language and local coverage | Filtering and result availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search | Reported blocked in China since 2012 by the UK Home Office’s January 2026 country note. | Strong multilingual and international coverage where available. | Blocked access prevents normal use from mainland networks. |
| Yahoo Search | Reported blocked in China since 2018 by the same UK Home Office note. | International coverage where available. | Blocked access prevents normal use from mainland networks. |
| Bing | GreatFire reported https://bing.com not blocked in its latest test on 27 September 2026. Its measurement is protocol- and URL-specific. |
Useful for English and international queries; Chinese local coverage can differ from Baidu. | Citizen Lab’s comparative study found filtering on Bing; a reachable homepage does not mean every result or feature is available. |
| Baidu | Domestic search option available within China’s internet environment. | Usually the strongest choice for Chinese-language queries and mainland services. | Citizen Lab reported filtering on Baidu. China’s search regulations cover results, snippets, autocomplete, related searches and recommendations. |
What to try first
For Chinese-language or mainland-local information
Start with Baidu. Its domestic indexing and Chinese-language focus can make it more useful for local businesses, government services and China-specific terminology. Availability does not mean results are unfiltered.
For English-language and international topics
Try Bing at https://bing.com. The 27 September 2026 GreatFire result indicates that this exact HTTPS address was reachable in its test, not that every reader, network, country gateway or Bing endpoint will behave the same way.

#1 Best Overall
For Google or Yahoo-specific results
Normal mainland access should not be expected: the UK Home Office’s January 2026 note reports Google Search blocked since 2012 and Yahoo Search blocked since 2018. A search engine being blocked is a network-access condition, not a statement about the quality of its index.
Why two people can see different results
Reachability changes by network and address
Filtering can apply differently to HTTP and HTTPS, to a main domain and a particular subdomain, or across networks and dates. GreatFire publishes URL-level measurements, so its Bing observation should be read narrowly: it tests the specified HTTPS address at a specified time.

Filtering can happen inside the search service
The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) regulates internet information search services. Its 2016 rules define these services as collecting and processing internet information for users to retrieve, and apply to covered services operating in China. The related official explanation says providers must not supply legally prohibited information through links, summaries, snapshots, suggested terms, related searches or recommendations.
Search engines do not filter identically
A 2023 Citizen Lab comparison found filtering by both Baidu and Bing, with differences in how that filtering affected results. That study is a comparative snapshot, not a live audit of every query today, so it should not be used to predict the response to a particular search.
How to check access on your own connection
- Connect to the mainland network you actually intend to use, such as your hotel, office or mobile connection.
- Open the exact HTTPS address you need, beginning with
https://, rather than assuming that a related domain or app will behave the same way. - Run several ordinary queries in the language you plan to use. Check whether the page loads, results appear, and links open.
- Compare Bing and Baidu for the same neutral query. Differences can reflect language coverage, indexing, ranking or filtering.
- Recheck when the result matters. A measurement from 27 September 2026 cannot guarantee availability later or on another network.
What China’s search rules mean for users
The CAC regulation identifies the Cyberspace Administration of China as the nationwide regulator for internet information search services. In Article 3, the CAC states in Chinese: “国家互联网信息办公室负责全国互联网信息搜索服务的监督管理执法工作。” This can be translated as: “The Cyberspace Administration of China is responsible for supervision, management, and law enforcement of internet information search services nationwide.”
A separate CAC notice dated 28 April 2026 says internet news-information services require a license and reports 3,633 approved service entities as of 31 March 2026. That figure covers the regulator’s news-information-service category; it is not a count of search engines or search users.
Rank #4
Can a different search engine remove China’s restrictions?
No. Switching from Google to Bing or Baidu can change reachability, language coverage and the results you receive, but it does not remove network blocking or guarantee access to particular content. The evidence here does not establish a universally effective or legally neutral circumvention method. Treat any access method as subject to the network, service, date and applicable rules.

- Mainland Chinese names, addresses or services: use Baidu first, then compare with Bing when an international perspective matters.
- English technical documentation or global news: test Bing, while checking that the specific pages you need actually open.
- A Google-only workflow: expect normal mainland access to fail and plan for the possibility that Google-dependent links or tools will remain unavailable.
- Travel or temporary access: test before you need the information, because hotel, workplace and mobile networks can produce different outcomes.
The Bottom Line
For mainland China, use Baidu for Chinese-local searches and test Bing for English or international searches. Google and Yahoo Search are reported blocked, and no engine should be assumed to provide unfiltered or permanently reliable access.
