Getty Images is worth considering when you need professionally licensed creative or editorial content, reliable rights documentation and a catalogue built for corporate, agency or media work. It is not a free photo site, and an editorial image is not automatically cleared for commercial use. Your decision should turn on the assignment, licence scope and buying volume—not on the brand name alone.
What Getty Images actually sells
Getty Images sells licences to use photographs, illustrations, vectors, video and audio. You do not buy copyright ownership of a file. Getty Images’ purchasing FAQ explains that downloading a file means buying a licence that grants rights for specified projects. Its Content Licence Agreement states: “By downloading content from Getty Images, you accept the terms of this agreement.” Using a file without a licence can create copyright-infringement risk.
The practical question is therefore not “Can I download this image?” but “Does the licence I am buying cover this exact use?” Check the asset designation, permitted media, audience, territory, duration, modifications and any restrictions before publishing.
Royalty-free, rights-managed and rights-ready compared
| Licence model | How it generally works | What affects the price or scope | Important caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Royalty-free (RF) | A one-time licence fee generally permits worldwide, unlimited, perpetual reuse under the agreement. Getty’s fee is based on file size. | File size and the terms attached to the asset. | “Royalty-free” does not mean free, and it does not override the agreement’s restrictions. |
| Rights-managed (RM) | Licensed for defined uses rather than unrestricted reuse. | Factors such as size, placement, duration and geographic distribution. | Confirm the precise project, placement, term and territory; a different use may require another licence. |
| Rights-ready (RR) | Rights are granted for specified uses, commonly for footage and other content with defined conditions. | The use details set out for the individual asset and agreement. | Do not assume an RR file permits every future production or distribution channel. |
Getty’s April 2026 licence agreement describes these models, but the asset page and checkout terms control the transaction you make. Keep the licence confirmation with your project records.

Can you use Getty editorial photos commercially?
Not automatically. Getty’s plan information says editorial images licensed through prepaid packs cannot be used for commercial uses or print covers. Editorial content is intended to report or illustrate real events, people and places; it is not generally cleared to imply that a person, brand or organization endorses a product.
A commercial campaign, product packaging, advertising placement, paid social promotion or other marketing use should be treated as a rights question requiring explicit clearance. Read the individual image’s editorial designation and licence, and ask Getty for a quote or written confirmation when the proposed use is not clearly covered. Do not convert an editorial news image into an advertisement merely because you have downloaded it.

Examples of uses that need special care
- News article or documentary: often aligns with an editorial licence, subject to the licence’s media and term.
- Company blog discussing an event: may be editorial or informational, but confirm the licence and avoid promotional presentation that implies endorsement.
- Advertising, packaging or a print cover: requires a licence that expressly permits the commercial or cover use; a prepaid pack’s editorial allowance does not.
- Social posts: check whether the licence covers the account, audience, paid promotion, duration and territory rather than assuming all social use is equivalent.
Getty Images buying options in 2026
| Option | Best suited to | Known scope and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Individual purchase | A one-off assignment or an asset with unusually specific rights needs. | Terms and price depend on the selected content and licence. Review the checkout licence before payment. |
| Prepaid packs | Buyers needing multiple downloads of eligible content. | Getty’s UK plan page says packs combine creative RF photos, illustrations, vectors, royalty-free video and most editorial images. Editorial images licensed through packs cannot be used for commercial uses or print covers. |
| Annual Premium Access | Organizations and teams with recurring, substantial demand. | Annual access is an enterprise-style arrangement; obtain the current regional quote and verify seats, download rules, content scope, renewals and rights. |
| Single-seat Creative or Editorial subscriptions | Individual professionals with recurring image needs. | Getty announced these plans on July 9, 2026. The announcement describes AI-free creative imagery and editorial coverage in news, sport, entertainment and the archive, but does not establish price, download allowance, renewal condition or rights term. |
Prices and availability vary by region and can change. The plan information available for this review is from Getty’s UK page, so it should not be used as a US price. Check your local checkout or obtain a current sales quote, recording the currency, date, recurring charge, download limits, renewal terms and licence scope.
Is Getty Images good value?
Getty positions itself as a premium service for corporate, agency and media customers, with broad creative and editorial content, support and customized rights and protections. That positioning can justify a higher budget when a project has legal, reputational or deadline sensitivity. It does not prove that every buyer receives better service or that Getty is cheaper than another provider.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGetty is a strong fit when
- You need a particular news, sport, entertainment or archival image that smaller libraries may not carry.
- Your client requires documented, defensible rights for a defined territory, term and media mix.
- You buy enough eligible content for a pack, subscription or negotiated annual arrangement to reduce per-asset administration.
- You need professional account support or customized rights protections.
Look elsewhere or buy cautiously when
- You need a genuinely free image; RF still carries a licence fee.
- Your budget is small and the assignment can be served by an appropriately licensed lower-cost library.
- You intend to use editorial material in advertising, packaging or a print cover.
- You cannot yet specify where, how long or to whom the image will be distributed.
A rights-check workflow before you download
- Classify the assignment. Decide whether it is editorial reporting, internal communication, marketing, advertising, packaging, a cover, a film or another use.
- Identify the asset type and licence. Record whether the file is creative or editorial and whether it is RF, RM or RR.
- List every distribution detail. Include media, placement, audience, territory, duration, print run or impressions, paid promotion and planned edits.
- Match the purchase route. Check whether an individual purchase, pack or subscription actually permits that use. Do not assume a subscription has the same terms as a single-file purchase.
- Read exclusions and obtain clearance. Pay particular attention to commercial use, print covers, endorsements, recognizable people, trademarks and sensitive subjects.
- Save the evidence. Retain the invoice, licence text, asset ID, download date and any written permission or quote.
- Recheck expanded use. A new territory, campaign, placement, term or client can require an additional licence even when the original use was compliant.
Common mistakes that create risk
- Confusing a paid RF licence with public-domain or free content.
- Assuming “editorial” means commercial clearance.
- Using a pack download on a print cover or advertisement despite the pack restriction.
- Applying an RM licence bought for one placement to a different campaign, medium or territory.
- Letting a subscription renew without confirming that its current content and rights still fit the project.
- Failing to keep licence records after a freelancer, agency or employee downloads the asset.
Bottom line for 2026
Getty Images is a premium licensing service, not a stock-photo free-for-all. It can be worthwhile for demanding professional assignments where catalogue depth, timely editorial coverage and rights certainty matter. Buy it only after matching the asset and purchase model to the exact use. In particular, editorial images in packs cannot be used for commercial purposes or print covers, and RF still requires payment and compliance with the licence. For current subscriptions and pricing, verify your region’s offer at checkout because the 2026 individual-plan announcement does not establish complete commercial terms.
