You can buy credit packs for occasional or unpredictable downloads, or choose a subscription for recurring use. Which makes sense depends on how many assets you expect to download, whether you need images, video or music, and the license rights your project requires. This review explains the trade-offs using Getty and iStock’s published information; it is not a hands-on assessment of asset quality or service performance.
How iStock works
iStock offers licensed creative assets through two purchase models: credit packs and subscriptions. Getty describes iStock as a value offering for creative stills and videos, and says its subscriptions include images, video and music. Available assets and download limits depend on the plan, so check the current offer for your market before buying.
iStock’s [official pricing page](https://www.istockphoto.com/plans-and-pricing) is dynamic: prices, plan details and promotions can vary by region and change over time. Compare the terms displayed for your location rather than relying on a price quoted elsewhere.
Should you get credits or a subscription?
| Factor | Credits | Subscription |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Occasional, one-off or hard-to-predict downloads; iStock says, “If you have one-off or hard-to-predict image needs, credits are a great option.” | Recurring downloads where the included monthly allowance and eligible assets suit your needs. |
| What to check | Credit cost for each asset and the pack terms shown at checkout. | Monthly download limit, asset eligibility, commitment period and any rollover or expiry terms. |
| Break-even guidance | Compare the cost of credits for the assets you actually expect to use. | iStock says a subscription may be better value at as few as four image downloads or two videos in a month. This is vendor guidance, not an independently calculated break-even point. |
Before deciding, estimate monthly downloads and separate image needs from video or music needs. Then compare the current price and allowance for a plan that covers the assets you want. Factor in whether the subscription is monthly or annual, what happens to unused downloads, and whether you need extended licensing or multi-user rights. The pricing page’s search listing has described rollover in some upgrade circumstances and a Premium + Video offer for first-time purchases redeemable through December 31, 2026; neither detail should be assumed to apply to every plan, market or buyer. Confirm the terms shown when you purchase.

Why pay for stock images if they’re royalty-free?
“Royalty-free” does not mean free of charge or free of restrictions. You pay to license an asset; under the applicable terms, you can use it as often as those terms permit without paying a separate royalty for every use. The license still governs what uses are allowed, and the price alone does not establish that a particular project is covered.
What does the iStock license cover?
iStock describes a standard license and options to add extended licensing or multi-user rights. These are not interchangeable: the rights you receive depend on the license and any additions purchased. Its pricing page also describes limits to legal protection, so do not assume every asset or use receives identical protection.
Check the current [iStock license agreement](https://www.istockphoto.com/legal/license-agreement) against the intended use before downloading, particularly for merchandise, redistribution, sensitive uses or access by a team. The available information does not resolve every permitted use or jurisdiction-specific legal issue; when the stakes are material, seek qualified legal advice.
What about iStock’s AI tools?
Getty describes Generative AI by iStock as a tool for creating ready-to-use generated content trained with Getty Images creative content. The iStock pricing page says AI-generated or AI-modified images remain separate from the visual library for others to license. These are vendor descriptions, not an independent guarantee that a particular output is suitable for every commercial, legal or editorial purpose. Review the applicable terms and assess the output for your use.
Can iStock fit into your existing workflow?
Getty says its APIs and integrations can connect content, metadata and search with tools including Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud and WordPress. That may help teams working in those environments, but the statement does not establish that every integration offers the same features or is available in every workflow. Confirm the specific connection and capabilities you need before choosing a plan.
What this review can—and cannot—establish
Getty’s 2025 Form 10-K says that more than half of Getty Images’ total revenue came from annual subscriptions as of December 31, 2025. This is a company-wide figure, not an iStock-only measure, and does not by itself show customer satisfaction or whether iStock is good value for a particular buyer.
Rank #4
The published plan information and regulatory filing support a comparison of iStock’s purchase models, licensing framework and stated integrations. They do not establish a hands-on quality ranking, current competitor price advantage, catalog-size comparison or customer-service performance. Judge the service against your download pattern and the exact rights and workflow you need.

- Estimate your use. Count likely monthly downloads and distinguish images from video and music.
- Check plan eligibility. Match the assets you want to the plan’s current download allowance and eligible content.
- Compare full terms. Check local-currency pricing, taxes, monthly or annual commitment, unused-download rules and any offer eligibility.
- Match the license to the project. Review the current license agreement, including any need for extended rights or multi-user access.
- Verify workflow needs. Confirm that the specific integration or API capability you rely on is available and works as required.
