If screenshots are not working on your Asus laptop, press Windows + Shift + S first. Windows opens the Snipping Tool overlay, where you can select a region and then save, annotate, or share the image. This method avoids the laptop’s Print Screen key, so it is the fastest way to tell whether the problem is the key or Windows capture itself.
If that shortcut does nothing, open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and choose New. Before assuming the capture failed, check the clipboard and the app’s save location: a Print Screen image may exist only in memory, while a Snipping Tool capture can be saved as a file.

Microsoft documents these capture paths for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its Snipping Tool instructions. The external keyboard is a diagnostic, not a normal repair: it can indicate a damaged built-in key, but it cannot fix a Windows or Snipping Tool problem.
Step 1: Use Windows + Shift + S
- Press and hold the Windows logo key and Shift, then press S.
- When the overlay appears, choose rectangular, window, full-screen, or freeform snip.
- Select the area or window. Windows places the capture in the Snipping Tool workflow and clipboard.
- Select the notification or open Snipping Tool, make any edits, and choose Save or Save as.
This is the best first workaround when the laptop’s Print Screen key appears unresponsive. Microsoft’s documented wording is: “Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the snipping tool overlay to capture an image snapshot.”

If the overlay does not appear
- Try the shortcut again after clicking the desktop or another ordinary application window.
- Open Snipping Tool from Start and test New. If that works, the app is present and the issue is likely the keyboard shortcut or key path.
- If neither route works, continue with the save-location and app checks below before changing drivers.
Step 2: Open Snipping Tool directly
- Select Start.
- Type Snipping Tool.
- Open the app and select New.
- Choose the capture mode and make the snip.
- Use the app’s save control to select a filename and location.
Direct launch separates a shortcut problem from an application problem. A working direct capture means Windows can take screenshots even if a particular Asus key or shortcut is not responding.
Step 3: Find a screenshot that seems to be missing
Print Screen may have copied, not saved
Microsoft distinguishes the ordinary Print Screen behavior from Snipping Tool’s editing and saving workflow. Press Print Screen, open an image-capable application such as Paint, and press Ctrl + V. If the image appears, the key worked; no image file was created automatically by that action.
Save a Snipping Tool capture explicitly
After a snip, open the capture in Snipping Tool and choose Save as. Review the app’s Settings for automatic-save behavior and check the Screenshots folder if automatic saving is enabled. Clipboard content and a saved file are different results, so check both.
Check the notification
Select the Snipping Tool notification that appears after a capture. It opens the image for annotation, copying, sharing, and saving. If notifications are dismissed, open Snipping Tool from Start and look for the recent capture workflow there.

Step 4: Determine whether the Asus key is the problem
Test the two non-Print Screen routes first: Windows + Shift + S and Snipping Tool > New. If both work but the laptop’s Print Screen key does not, focus on the keyboard path rather than reinstalling screenshot software.
Check the exact keyboard and model documentation
Key labels, Fn-layer behavior, keyboard layouts, and shortcut handling can vary by Asus model and Windows or driver version. Identify the exact model printed on the laptop or shown in Windows, then use the model’s documentation before assuming the key is defective.
Use an external keyboard only as a test
Connect a basic USB keyboard and press its Print Screen key, then paste into Paint or another image-capable app. If the external key works while the built-in key does not, physical damage or a model-specific keyboard issue becomes more plausible. This test does not repair the laptop; arrange model-specific support if the built-in key is damaged.
Step 5: Use Asus support for model-specific help
Search the exact laptop model on the ASUS Support page for Microsoft Snipping Tool and open the model’s Support or driver area. ASUS notes that operations can differ by model and software version. Use the drivers listed for your exact device rather than installing a package intended for another model.

ASUS also publishes a separate Perfect Screenshot introduction. That page concerns an advanced feature, not the ordinary Windows screenshot workflow. Its requirements must not be treated as prerequisites for Windows + Shift + S or Snipping Tool.
Do not confuse Perfect Screenshot requirements with ordinary screenshots
ASUS’s Perfect Screenshot feature is for eligible Copilot+ laptops and certain other systems with the required processor and neural-processing capability. ASUS’s 2025 documentation lists a minimum NPU performance of 40 TOPS, Snipping Tool version 11.2504.38.0 or higher for the Windows Insider preview context, and minimum NPU driver versions of 32.0.203.240 for AMD and 32.0.100.3717 for Intel. These figures apply to Perfect Screenshot eligibility and its preview/software context. A normal screenshot does not require an AI-capable laptop, an NPU, or those driver versions.
Troubleshooting by symptom
“Nothing happens” when I press Print Screen
- Press Windows + Shift + S instead.
- Press Print Screen, paste into Paint, and check whether the clipboard contains the image.
- Try an external USB keyboard to distinguish a physical key problem from a Windows problem.
The overlay opens, but no file appears
- Open the notification or Snipping Tool window.
- Use Save as and select a known folder.
- Check the Screenshots folder and Snipping Tool automatic-save setting.
Snipping Tool will not capture
- Launch it directly from Start and select New.
- Confirm whether another capture mode works, such as full screen instead of window.
- Record your exact Asus model and Windows version, then consult Asus model-specific support.
Only one application refuses to capture
Try a desktop or another ordinary window. Some applications can display protected or specially rendered content; the supplied Microsoft and ASUS documentation does not establish a universal fix for every application. Avoid assuming the laptop keyboard is defective until ordinary windows capture correctly.
The laptop has an Fn key or unusual Print Screen label
Check the exact model’s keyboard documentation and layout. Do not apply a key combination from a different Asus model as though it were universal. Windows + Shift + S remains the model-independent test for the standard Windows workflow.

Reliability, privacy, and workflow tips
- For repeatable work, use Windows + Shift + S and save immediately with a descriptive filename.
- Paste clipboard-only captures into an image editor before switching tasks; clipboard contents can be replaced by the next copy operation.
- For long pages, capture in sections or use a tool designed for full-page output; the standard snipping overlay is a screen-area capture, not a guaranteed webpage archive.
- Do not upload private screenshots to an online service unless its handling meets your organization’s requirements.

Why can I paste a screenshot but cannot find a file?
Print Screen normally places a full-screen image on the clipboard. Paste it into Paint or another image-capable app, then save it yourself.
