Pi-hole is worth setting up if you want DNS-level filtering for several devices and are comfortable maintaining a small, always-on network service. It can block domains associated with ads and other unwanted content without installing software on every client, but it is neither a universal ad blocker nor an anonymity tool. Its effectiveness depends on which devices actually use Pi-hole for DNS, and a host or network misconfiguration can disrupt name resolution.
What Pi-hole is
Pi-hole is a local DNS sinkhole. A device sends a domain lookup to Pi-hole; Pi-hole checks its cache and blocking lists, then forwards allowed requests to the upstream DNS server you configure. Blocked lookups receive a local response instead of being resolved externally. The project describes this as protecting devices “without installing any client-side software” (Pi-hole documentation).
Pi-hole supports a web interface, DNS caching, optional DHCP service, and IPv4/IPv6 operation according to its documentation. Its default and recommended NULL blocking mode returns 0.0.0.0 for IPv4 or :: for IPv6 blocked queries; other modes are available for particular network requirements (blocking modes).
How DNS filtering works in practice
- A client requests a domain, such as an advertising or tracking hostname.
- Pi-hole checks its local cache.
- If the name is on a blocking list, Pi-hole returns the configured blocking response.
- If it is not blocked or cached, Pi-hole forwards the query to the selected upstream DNS service, unless you have configured a local recursive resolver.
This is domain-level filtering. It can stop a hostname from resolving, but it cannot inspect every connection or remove advertising that is served from the same domain as the content you want. The official documentation does not provide a universal blocking percentage, so claims that Pi-hole blocks a fixed share of all ads or trackers are not justified.

What hardware do you need?
Pi-hole does not require a Raspberry Pi. The project explicitly says, “Despite the name, you are not limited to running Pi-hole on a Raspberry Pi” (prerequisites). Any suitable, reliable machine running a supported operating system can work.
| Requirement | Official guidance | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 512 MB RAM | This is a documented baseline, not a performance benchmark. |
| Storage | 2 GB free space minimum; 4 GB recommended | Leave room for the operating system, logs, updates, and list data. |
| Addressing | Stable IP address required | Use a static address or a DHCP reservation. |
| Supported systems | Alpine, Armbian OS, Debian, CentOS Stream, Fedora, Raspberry Pi OS, and Ubuntu; maintained versions only | Check that your exact release is still supported before installation. |
| Prebuilt FTL architectures | x86_64, armv6, armv7, armv8/aarch64, and riscv64 | Other architectures require compiling FTL from source. |
An old mini PC, virtual machine, home server, or spare Linux system may therefore be a better choice than buying new hardware. The machine should remain powered on and reachable by clients, and its DNS port must be available.

Bare-metal or Docker installation?
Pi-hole documents both a direct installation on a supported operating system and a Docker deployment. Neither is established as universally better; choose the model that matches how you already administer services.
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Bare metal | You want Pi-hole managed directly by the host operating system. | Fewer container-specific networking decisions, but host packages and service configuration are your responsibility. |
| Docker | You already maintain containers, compose files, and persistent volumes. | DNS and DHCP networking, port publishing, storage, and container updates require careful administration. |
The project offers a one-step shell installer as well as alternatives for downloading or inspecting the script first. Piping an installer directly to a shell is convenient but controversial; review the documented alternatives if you do not want that workflow (installation overview, basic installation).

Making your whole network use Pi-hole
Installing the software does not automatically redirect your home network. After installation, configure the network so clients receive the Pi-hole address as their DNS server.
- Give the Pi-hole host a static address or create a DHCP reservation on your router.
- In the router’s LAN or DHCP settings, set the DNS server distributed to clients to the Pi-hole address.
- Reconnect clients or renew their DHCP leases, then check Pi-hole’s query log for their requests.
- If the router cannot advertise a custom DNS server, disable its DHCP service and enable Pi-hole’s DHCP server instead, following the project’s post-install guidance.
- For a small test, configure an individual device manually before changing the whole network.
Some clients, browsers, VPNs, or applications can use their own encrypted DNS settings and bypass the router’s DNS choice. Those clients will not be filtered unless their configuration is changed or the network policy prevents the bypass.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
Pi-hole listens on DNS port 53 over TCP and UDP. Optional DHCP operation uses additional ports, so check for conflicts with existing services (documentation).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Upstream DNS and Unbound
Allowed queries normally go to an upstream DNS provider you select. That provider can therefore see those DNS requests. Pi-hole’s Unbound guide documents an alternative: run a recursive resolver on the same host and have Pi-hole query it locally (Unbound guide). Unbound is optional and does not require another machine.

Neither arrangement makes all internet traffic private. Pi-hole handles DNS decisions; it does not, by itself, encrypt every connection, conceal your IP address, or provide anonymity.
Important failure modes
Pi-hole host goes offline
Clients configured to use only Pi-hole may lose DNS resolution when the host fails. The documentation gives an additional warning: if the Pi-hole host itself uses Pi-hole as its upstream DNS and Pi-hole fails, the host loses DNS resolution, complicating updates or repairs (post-install guidance). Keep console or local access available and consider a second DNS service only if you understand the consequences of allowing clients to bypass filtering.
Clients are not actually using Pi-hole
Check the client’s current DNS servers rather than assuming the router setting propagated. A manually configured device, VPN, or private-DNS feature can continue using another resolver.
Port or address conflicts
A changing host address breaks client configuration. Another DNS service already using port 53, or another DHCP server active on the LAN, can prevent Pi-hole from serving correctly.
Is Pi-hole a good fit for you?
| Pi-hole makes sense when… | Look elsewhere or reconsider when… |
|---|---|
| You want one centrally managed DNS filter for many home devices. | You need guaranteed removal of every ad, tracker, or in-app promotion. |
| You can keep a supported host powered on and maintain its address. | You cannot tolerate DNS downtime from a single local service. |
| You are comfortable changing router DHCP/DNS settings. | Your network requires services or clients that must bypass local DNS. |
| You want control over lists and upstream resolution. | You are seeking full traffic encryption or anonymity rather than DNS control. |
The practical verdict is favorable for technically comfortable households: the hardware requirements are modest, the service can cover multiple clients, and repurposing existing Linux hardware avoids a dedicated purchase. The setup is not “install once and forget,” however. Addressing, DHCP/DNS configuration, list maintenance, and recovery planning determine whether it remains dependable.
