Quick verdict
| Tool | Best for | What it checks | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| GlockApps | Teams that need placement evidence across mailbox providers and filters | Seed-inbox placement, SpamAssassin, additional commercial filters, SPF/DKIM/DMARC and 50+ blocklists | Seed results are directional; they do not guarantee performance with your real audience |
| Mail-Tester | A quick pre-send sanity check | Message spam-score analysis plus authentication, blacklist and related diagnostics | It is not a substitute for broad, provider-by-provider seed testing |
| ZeroBounce | List hygiene and address-risk reduction | Invalid, temporary, disposable, catch-all and suspected spam-trap addresses | It does not replace message-level inbox-placement testing |
| Mailgun | Developer-led teams and SaaS products | Deliverability functions integrated with sending workflows | Not positioned in the comparison as a general-purpose standalone spam-score checker |
| EasyDMARC | Authentication and deliverability monitoring | DMARC-focused monitoring and related controls | Choose it for authentication visibility rather than assuming it provides every placement test |
| Mailtrap | Pre-send development and QA | Controlled testing during application development | Development testing does not show how a live campaign will perform for every provider |

What a “spam score” can—and cannot—tell you
Score analysis
A score is an assessment of message characteristics such as wording, formatting, links and technical signals against one or more filters. It is useful for finding obvious problems before sending, but it is not a universal pass/fail rating. Different mailbox providers apply different models and policies.
Inbox placement
Placement testing sends the message to controlled seed addresses at providers such as Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo or AOL and reports whether it appeared in the inbox, spam folder or was not delivered. GlockApps’ Inbox Insight also reports results from SpamAssassin, Barracuda, Microsoft Exchange Online Protection, Proofpoint and a Google filter. These tests show how a message behaved under the test conditions, not how every recipient will experience it.
#1 Best Overall
Authentication and reputation
SPF authorizes sending servers, DKIM signs the message and DMARC tells receiving providers how to handle messages that fail alignment. A checker can confirm whether these records and signatures are present, while blocklist checks look for a listed sending IP or domain. Neither result, by itself, measures recipient engagement or the reputation that providers have assigned to your sender.
List and address risk
Invalid, temporary, disposable, catch-all and spam-trap addresses can increase bounces or harm reputation. Address validation addresses that risk before a campaign is sent; it does not test the content or placement of the message.
Detailed tool guide
GlockApps: best for placement depth
GlockApps says its free spam checker shows inbox placement across Gmail, Yahoo, AOL and Outlook, analyzes the message against the SpamAssassin filter, checks the sending IP against more than 50 blocklists, and verifies SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Its Inbox Insight test adds seed results from SpamAssassin, Barracuda, Microsoft Exchange Online Protection, Proofpoint and a Google filter.
Choose GlockApps when the question is, “Where did this message land at each major provider and filter?” It is the most suitable option in this group for teams that need comparative placement evidence and ongoing monitoring rather than a single score.
- Use the free checker for an initial technical and content review.
- Use Inbox Insight when a campaign, product launch or reputation issue warrants seed testing across several providers.
- Compare the result with your own Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo and other mailbox-provider data before changing a campaign.
Mail-Tester: best for a fast one-off check
The 2026 comparison evaluates Mail-Tester and similar services on inbox placement, spam-score analysis, SPF/DKIM/DMARC checks, blacklist monitoring and email validation. It positions Mail-Tester as the quick-check option. Send a draft to the address it provides, then use the resulting report to catch authentication failures, obvious content issues and reputation warnings before launch.
Mail-Tester is efficient when you need an answer in minutes and are not yet investigating provider-specific placement. Escalate to seed testing if the campaign is high-volume, revenue-critical or already showing spam-folder delivery.
Rank #3
ZeroBounce: best for list and address risk
ZeroBounce says its verification detects temporary and disposable addresses, spam traps, catch-all domains and other invalid or high-risk addresses. The vendor advertises “99.6% guaranteed accuracy”; that is a vendor claim, not an independent benchmark.
Use it when bounce rates, old lists, purchased data or suspicious sign-ups may be the underlying problem. Remove or suppress risky records according to your sending policy, then test the actual message separately. A clean validation result does not indicate that the message will reach the inbox.

Mailgun, EasyDMARC and Mailtrap
The comparison places Mailgun with developer-led teams and SaaS, EasyDMARC with authentication and deliverability monitoring, and Mailtrap with pre-send development testing. They are useful category alternatives, but they are not interchangeable with one another or with a dedicated placement test. Select them based on whether your primary need is sending-workflow integration, authentication visibility or application QA.
A practical pre-send checking sequence
- Confirm the sending identity. Verify that SPF includes the services actually sending mail, DKIM signs with the intended domain, and DMARC is published with the alignment and policy you expect. Check the visible From domain against the authenticated domains.
- Run a fast message diagnostic. Use Mail-Tester or GlockApps’ free checker to inspect content signals, authentication, blacklists and obvious configuration errors.
- Validate the recipient list when risk is plausible. Use ZeroBounce if the list contains old, imported, role-based, disposable or otherwise uncertain addresses. Suppress invalid and high-risk results instead of repeatedly mailing them.
- Run seed placement tests for important sends. Use GlockApps Inbox Insight or an equivalent placement test with addresses at the providers your audience uses. Record inbox, spam and missing-message outcomes separately.
- Check your real mailbox-provider data. Compare seed results with bounce codes, complaint rates, engagement, Google Postmaster or Microsoft sender data available to your organization, and provider-specific delivery reports. Seed tests are directional, so your own traffic remains the deciding evidence.
- Fix one failure class at a time. Correct authentication or blocklist issues first, then address list quality, content and engagement. Retest after DNS, template or sending-infrastructure changes.
How to read common results
Good score, spam-folder placement
This usually means the score did not capture a reputation, engagement or provider-policy problem. Review recent volume changes, complaint and bounce rates, authentication alignment, domain and IP history, and the provider-specific seed results.
Authentication failure
Check the exact sending service, DNS record, DKIM selector and DMARC alignment. Multiple platforms may send for the same domain, so an SPF record that covers one service can still fail for another.
Blocklist listing
Identify whether the listed IP or domain is actually used for the campaign. Investigate the listing operator’s delisting process, stop the behavior that caused the listing and avoid assuming that one clean checker result proves the issue is resolved everywhere.

High-risk addresses
Suppress invalid, disposable and suspected trap addresses. For catch-all domains, treat the result as uncertain rather than automatically safe; use confirmed engagement or an explicit opt-in process before mailing.
Mixed provider results
Do not average the outcomes into one score. A message that reaches Gmail’s inbox but Outlook’s junk folder has a provider-specific problem worth investigating separately.
Why no checker can promise inbox delivery
Placement depends on sender reputation, recipient engagement, complaint behavior, message and link history, sending volume, infrastructure, mailbox-provider policy and campaign behavior. Controlled seed addresses cannot reproduce every recipient’s history or mailbox configuration. A clean score or seed report therefore means “no issue detected under these test conditions,” not “guaranteed inbox placement.”
Which checker should you use?
- Choose Mail-Tester for a quick check immediately before a routine send.
- Choose GlockApps when you need provider-by-provider placement evidence, filter diagnostics, blocklist checks or ongoing monitoring.
- Choose ZeroBounce when list quality and risky addresses are the likely source of bounces or reputation damage.
- Add Mailgun, EasyDMARC or Mailtrap when your main requirement is developer sending integration, authentication monitoring or development-stage QA.
The Bottom Line
Use Mail-Tester for speed, GlockApps for placement evidence and ZeroBounce for address risk. For consequential campaigns, combine the tools: authenticate correctly, check blocklists and content, validate the list, run seed tests, and judge the final result against your own provider data.
