If Print Screen seems broken, first press Windows + Shift + S to check whether Windows can capture the screen without that key. Then press Ctrl + V in Paint or another editor: the usual Print Screen behavior copies an image to the clipboard and may not save a file. If the shortcut works but the key does not, check the laptop’s key labels, Fn behavior, and Windows’ screen-snipping setting.
First, identify what is not working
“Print Screen not working” can mean a few different things: the key produces no capture, the capture goes somewhere unexpected, or the key opens a snipping overlay instead of copying the whole screen. These checks help separate those cases before you change settings or assume the keyboard is faulty.
- No capture: test Windows + Shift + S, which opens the Snipping Tool overlay without using the Print Screen key.
- No file: Print Screen commonly copies a full-screen image to the clipboard rather than creating a file automatically.
- Different result than expected: Windows may be configured to make the Print Screen button open screen snipping.
The menu names below are for Windows. Settings labels can vary by Windows release, and laptop Fn-key behavior depends on the make and model.
Use Snipping Tool to capture without the Print Screen key
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- When the Snipping Tool overlay appears, select the area you want to capture.
- To paste the capture into another app, open that app and press Ctrl + V. You can also select the notification that appears after a capture to open it in Snipping Tool.
This is a useful first test because it bypasses the physical Print Screen key. If it works, Windows’ capture feature is available and the issue is more likely to be the key’s layout, its configured behavior, or where you expected the image to appear. If the overlay does not open, continue with the keyboard and clipboard checks below.

Check whether Print Screen is set to open screen snipping
Windows can assign the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. If pressing the key now brings up a selection overlay instead of copying the whole screen, inspect this setting.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility > Keyboard.
- Inspect Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Turn it off if you want the key to stop opening the overlay.
Windows 10
Microsoft’s documented route is Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard. Look for the Print Screen option there. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s clipboard documentation; check Microsoft’s current Windows lifecycle guidance when deciding whether to keep using that version.
With the setting enabled, a snipping overlay is expected behavior rather than a failed key. If you want to make a whole-screen capture, try the ordinary Print Screen clipboard test or use Windows + PrtScn to save an image where supported.

Find the Print Screen key and try the laptop’s Fn behavior
Laptop keyboards do not all place or label the key the same way. Look for PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn, including smaller or differently colored legends that indicate a secondary function. On some laptops the key needs Fn; the correct combination is device-specific, so use the laptop maker’s documentation or keyboard markings rather than assuming one Fn shortcut works on every model.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If your keyboard has no Print Screen key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative. If you have a suitable PrtSc key but it appears to do nothing, try the manufacturer-indicated Fn combination and then test the clipboard as described next.
Check whether the capture is on the clipboard
Print Screen commonly copies the full screen to the clipboard without saving a separate image file. To test it, press the key (or the laptop-specific Fn combination), open Paint or another app that accepts images, and press Ctrl + V. If the capture appears, the key worked; the mismatch was expecting an automatically saved file.

You can also press Windows + V to inspect clipboard history. Clipboard history is optional and is not on by default; Windows prompts you to turn it on the first time you use it. It is distinct from ordinary clipboard behavior: a Print Screen capture can be pasted with Ctrl + V even if clipboard history has not been enabled.
Look in the Screenshots folder when using Windows + PrtScn
If you used Windows + PrtScn, check File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. Microsoft documents this as the save location on supported hardware. This shortcut differs from pressing Print Screen alone: one normally copies a capture to the clipboard, while Windows + PrtScn saves it as a file.

Choose the shortcut that matches the result you need
| Method | Uses the built-in Print Screen key? | Capture | Where the result goes | Hardware needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Print Screen | Yes | Usually the full screen | Clipboard; paste with Ctrl + V | Working key or device-specific Fn function |
| Windows + Shift + S | No | Selected area using Snipping Tool | Clipboard; paste or open the capture notification | No additional hardware |
| Windows + PrtScn | Yes | Full-screen capture | Pictures > Screenshots on supported hardware | Working PrtSc key or laptop-specific key behavior |
| Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar | No dedicated PrtSc key required | Screenshot alternative documented by Microsoft | Use the resulting capture in Windows | A compatible laptop keyboard |
| USB keyboard with a Print Screen key | No; uses the external keyboard | Depends on the key behavior in Windows | Usually clipboard, as with Print Screen | External keyboard |
The external-keyboard option is a practical workaround when the built-in key is missing or physically damaged, not a requirement for Windows screenshots. Verify the keyboard’s layout and that it includes a dedicated Print Screen key before buying; Windows + Shift + S is the no-purchase alternative.

Troubleshoot by symptom
Pressing Print Screen appears to do nothing
- Try Windows + Shift + S. If the overlay opens, use it while you check the physical key’s label and any device-specific Fn behavior.
- Press Print Screen, then paste into Paint with Ctrl + V. The image may be on the clipboard even though no file appeared.
- Inspect Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard in Windows 11, or Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard in Windows 10, for the option that assigns Print Screen to screen snipping.
The key opens a selection overlay instead of taking a full-screen capture
Check Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping in the keyboard settings for your Windows version. If the option is on, the overlay is the configured action. Turn it off if you prefer the key’s ordinary clipboard behavior.
The screenshot was not saved as a file
Press Ctrl + V in Paint or another editor to check the clipboard. For a file, use Windows + PrtScn and check Pictures > Screenshots on supported hardware.
The laptop has no Print Screen key or the key is damaged
Try Windows + Shift + S, or, if the keyboard lacks a PrtScn button, try Microsoft’s Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar alternative. For a physically damaged key, consult the laptop manufacturer for model-specific repair or replacement guidance. An external USB keyboard with a dedicated key is another optional workaround; confirm its layout before purchasing.

If you need a website screenshot rather than a screenshot of your laptop desktop, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. Its capture options include cookie-banner acceptance and removal of more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.
For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP. Replace the example URL with the site you want to capture and use your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These website captures are separate from Windows’ built-in desktop screenshot shortcuts.
