If image files show generic icons in Finder, switch the affected folder to Icon view, open View > Show View Options, and enable Show icon preview when that option is available. Then test the same file with Finder’s Preview pane and Quick Look. Those checks separate a display-setting problem from a broader preview problem.
Start with the folder’s view and icon-preview setting
Finder does not show large image thumbnails in every layout. Icon view is the presentation intended to display files as large thumbnails; List, Column, and Gallery views use different arrangements and preview behavior. View settings can also be stored per folder, so one directory may show thumbnails while another does not.
- Open the folder containing the affected images.
- Choose View > as Icons, or press Command-1.
- Open View > Show View Options.
- Turn on Show icon preview if that checkbox appears.
- Close the options panel and allow Finder a moment to redraw the icons, especially in a folder with many large files.
The exact controls can vary by macOS release and by the folder’s current view. If Show icon preview is not offered, remain in Icon view and continue with the preview tests below rather than enabling unrelated display options.
Use Preview and Quick Look to identify what is actually failing
Small thumbnails, the Preview pane, and Quick Look are separate Finder surfaces. Testing all three tells you whether the image can be rendered at all or whether only the icon representation is missing.

Test Finder’s Preview pane
- Select one image file without opening it.
- Choose View > Show Preview.
- If Finder displays a larger rendition, use View > Show Preview Options to inspect the options available for that file type.
Preview options differ by file type. A working Preview pane demonstrates that Finder can read and render the selected file, but it does not by itself restore the small icon thumbnail.
Test Quick Look
- Select the image in Finder.
- Press the Space bar.
- Close Quick Look with Space again or the close control, then test another image.
If both Preview and Quick Look show the picture while the icon remains generic, concentrate on the Icon view setting and thumbnail service. If neither surface can display it, the issue may involve the file, its access location, or a broader preview failure; Finder’s controls alone may not identify the cause.
Restart the thumbnail service as an optional workaround
A commonly reported community workaround is to stop Finder’s Quick Look thumbnail process and relaunch Finder. It is anecdotal, version-dependent, and not an Apple guarantee that every thumbnail failure will be fixed. Save work in other applications before forcing a process to quit.
- Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor.
- Use the search field to find
com.apple.quicklook.ThumbnailsAgent. - Select the matching process and click the stop button in the Activity Monitor toolbar.
- Choose Force Quit when prompted.
- Open the Apple menu, choose Force Quit, select Finder, and click Relaunch.
- Return to the affected folder, switch to Icon view, and check whether previews are rebuilt.
The process may start again automatically after it is stopped. A reported improvement can be temporary, and a missing process or a refusal to quit is a reason to stop rather than repeatedly force-quit system components.

Compare the symptom across files, folders, and locations
Before changing more settings, test a small set of files. The pattern is more useful than a single generic icon.
| Check | What to record | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| One image versus several | Whether every image is affected or only particular files | A one-file problem points toward that file or format; a broad failure points toward Finder’s preview path. |
| One folder versus many | Whether another folder shows thumbnails in Icon view | A single-folder pattern makes per-folder view options especially important. |
| Local versus external storage | Whether files on an external, network, or cloud-synced location behave differently | Different storage paths can produce different access and loading conditions; the reviewed Apple guidance does not establish one universal cause. |
| Icon, Preview, and Quick Look | Which of the three surfaces can render the image | This separates an icon-only symptom from a wider preview failure. |
| After relaunch | Whether thumbnails return and for how long | Temporary recovery supports trying normal Finder settings first and documenting recurrence. |
Repeat the test with a few images that you know open normally. Do not infer a complete format-compatibility matrix from one success or failure; the available guidance does not provide a current, exhaustive list of formats supported by Finder thumbnails.
What to do when thumbnails still do not appear
Confirm the basic view again
Open View > Show View Options in the exact folder where the icons are wrong. View preferences can differ between folders, so changing the setting in another directory may not affect the problem folder.
Check whether the image itself opens
Use Preview or Quick Look on the same file. If it opens there, keep the troubleshooting focused on icon previews rather than treating the image as unreadable. If it fails in both places, note the file extension, where it is stored, and whether other images from the same source work.

Use the restart workaround only once as a diagnostic step
Stopping com.apple.quicklook.ThumbnailsAgent and relaunching Finder can be worth trying after the settings and preview tests. Because the workaround is community-reported, do not treat a temporary improvement as proof of a permanent repair.
Collect details before contacting Apple Support
If the problem persists, record the macOS version, the image extensions you tested, whether Icon view’s preview option was enabled, which of Preview or Quick Look worked, and whether the issue affects one folder or the whole Mac. Include whether the files are local, on removable media, network-mounted, or synchronized by a cloud service. This information lets support reproduce the symptom without assuming a cause that has not been established.
Common mistakes and safe recovery
- Looking for thumbnails in List view: Switch to Icon view before judging the result.
- Changing a different folder’s settings: Open View Options while the affected folder is active.
- Confusing the Preview pane with icon previews: A working pane does not automatically enable small thumbnails.
- Force-quitting the wrong process: In Activity Monitor, verify the exact name
com.apple.quicklook.ThumbnailsAgent. - Assuming one file proves a format rule: Test several known-good images and report the extensions instead of claiming universal compatibility.
- Repeating force quits: If Finder or the agent repeatedly fails, stop experimenting and document the state for current Apple support.
Or skip the browser setup
If your actual task is capturing a clean screenshot of a website for documentation, testing, or a report, ScreenshotNeo can do that with one request. It is a website screenshot API, not a repair for Finder’s local thumbnail service, so use it for web pages rather than files already on your Mac.
Its capture pipeline accepts cookie and consent banners before the shot and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result in headers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing the Finder icon size restore missing thumbnails?
Icon size changes how large previews appear but do not replace the per-folder Show icon preview setting. Check that setting first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does Quick Look work while Finder icons stay generic?
Quick Look and icon thumbnails use separate Finder surfaces. A working Quick Look narrows the symptom to icon-preview behavior without proving a specific underlying cause.
Is restarting ThumbnailsAgent an official Apple fix?
No. It is a community-reported, version-dependent workaround. Apple’s documented guidance covers Finder views and preview controls, not a guaranteed repair from restarting that process.
What information should I provide if I contact support?
Provide your macOS version, tested image extensions, affected locations, Icon-view setting, Preview and Quick Look results, and whether relaunching Finder changed the behavior.
