Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You can create a personal website with a no-code editor such as Google Sites or by publishing website files with a service such as GitHub Pages. Choose based on whether you would rather avoid code or have more control over your files. Start with a clear purpose, build only the pages you need, preview them, then publish and check the live address.
Choose what your website is for
Write one sentence describing what visitors should learn or do. For example: “This site introduces me to potential employers and shows selected design projects.” That purpose will help you decide what to include and what to leave out.
A small personal site commonly needs an introduction, an about or résumé page, examples of work, and a way to make contact. You do not need all four: a profile may need only an introduction and contact details, while a portfolio should make its work easy to find.
Choose how to build and publish it
| Route | Good fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Google Sites | You want a visual editor and do not want to manage code or website files. | It is straightforward to arrange pages and content, but check the account and custom-domain limitations if you plan to use your own domain. Google Sites custom-domain guidance. |
| GitHub Pages | You can manage website files and a repository, and want to publish a static site. | A user site can use a username.github.io address. Availability depends on your GitHub plan and whether the repository is public or private. GitHub Pages quickstart. |
| Paid hosting and a domain | You want greater control over files and appearance and are prepared to choose and maintain services. | You will need to arrange hosting and, if desired, register a domain. Costs depend on the provider, plan, domain extension, and renewal terms; no single current price applies. Free hosted options can be enough for initial experiments. MDN: Publishing your website. |
For a simple site and minimal setup, start with a hosted visual builder. Choose GitHub Pages if you are comfortable working with files and repositories. You can begin on a service-provided address and decide later whether a custom domain is worth the extra setup.

Create the pages and add your content
Google Sites: build in the editor
- Open Google Sites and create a new site. Google’s Create your first site with Google Sites guide walks through the editor.
- Add pages for the content your purpose requires, then arrange them in a useful order. Add text, images, and layouts, and choose a theme that keeps the site readable.
- Give the site a clear title. Google notes that the title appears in the header and browser window title after publication; at least two pages are needed for the site title to appear.
- Use Preview to review the pages and available layouts before publishing. Check that the text, images, page order, links, and layout make sense for visitors.
Google Sites saves edits automatically, but saving is not the same as publishing: the site is not public until you publish it.
GitHub Pages: prepare a repository
GitHub Pages publishes site files from a repository. Follow the GitHub Pages quickstart to create and configure the repository and Pages settings; the user-site address follows the username.github.io pattern. GitHub’s eligibility rules depend on plan and repository visibility: GitHub Free supports Pages from public repositories, while private-repository availability depends on specified paid plans.
Publish and check the site
Publish from Google Sites
- In the Google Sites editor, select Publish.
- Review the web address and the audience or sharing settings shown in the publishing flow, then confirm publication.
- Open the published address as a visitor and check that the pages and links are visible as intended.
Later edits save automatically, but changes do not become public merely because they have been saved; publish the updated site when you are ready for visitors to see them.
Publish with GitHub Pages
Complete the repository and Pages setup in GitHub’s quickstart, then visit the published address to confirm it loads. The setup depends on the repository configuration and platform processing, so follow the current instructions rather than assuming a particular file or setting is already in place.

Decide whether you need a custom domain
A domain is the address people type or click; hosting is the service that stores and serves the site’s files. Registering a domain alone does not create or host a website. A service-provided address is often adequate for a first profile or experiment.
If you want a custom address, follow the host’s instructions for connecting it and configuring DNS. For GitHub Pages, GitHub recommends verifying domain ownership before attaching the domain. Its guidance distinguishes subdomains such as www.example.com, which use a CNAME record, from apex domains such as example.com, which use an A, ALIAS, or ANAME record through the DNS provider. Check that both the address you intend to share and any alternate version, such as the www address, behave as expected. See GitHub’s custom-domain and Pages guidance.

GitHub warns that leaving DNS pointed at GitHub after disabling a Pages site can expose a domain to takeover. Remove or update DNS records when you stop using the site, and follow the host’s security guidance.

Google’s custom-domain instructions describe importing a consumer Google Site into a Workspace account before connecting a custom domain. The documentation also notes that some account-dependent features may not work on a mapped domain. The site must be shared with the world for published viewers; otherwise, visitors may be redirected to its sites.google.com address. Review Google Sites’ custom-domain help before choosing this route, especially if public access or account-specific features matter to you.
