A dedicated IP is an internet address reserved for one customer, account, or organization rather than being used concurrently by many customers. It is commonly configured to remain the same, giving websites, firewalls, and business services a predictable address to recognize. “Dedicated” describes who uses the address; “static” describes whether it changes. The two often come together in VPN and cloud products, but they are not identical.
What does a dedicated IP address mean?
An IP address identifies the apparent source of internet traffic. With a dedicated IP service, the provider assigns an address exclusively to your account or organization. External websites see that assigned address instead of the address shared by a pool of customers.
In a consumer VPN, the dedicated address is usually the VPN server’s exit address. Your device still connects through an encrypted tunnel, but online services see the reserved VPN address. In business networking, a cloud provider may supply a dedicated egress address for an organization’s outbound traffic. Neither example necessarily represents your home internet provider’s address.
Dedicated is not the same as static
A dedicated address can be exclusive without being permanently unchanged, while a static address can remain unchanged even when it is shared or used by more than one customer. Providers frequently sell both properties together, so check the service terms for a specific guarantee that the address will remain stable.

Dedicated IP versus shared VPN IP
| Characteristic | Dedicated IP | Shared VPN IP |
|---|---|---|
| Who uses the address | One customer, account, or organization | Multiple customers using the provider’s shared service |
| Recognition by websites and firewalls | Provides a consistent source address that can be recognized or allowlisted | Many unrelated users appear from the same address |
| Privacy blending | Less blending because activity repeatedly comes from one reserved address | More blending among customers using the same address |
| Reputation effects | Less exposure to another shared user’s misuse of the same address, but no guarantee of clean reputation | May encounter friction caused by another user’s activity on the address |
| Best fit | Allowlists, remote business access, and services requiring a predictable source | General-purpose privacy and greater user anonymity through shared use |
What is a dedicated IP address for a VPN used for?
IP allowlisting
Organizations can tell a firewall, hosted application, or third-party service to accept connections from a known address. A dedicated VPN exit address makes that rule practical for remote workers who need to reach company systems without adding every employee’s changing home address.
Remote business access
An administrator can configure access policies around one predictable VPN source. This can simplify connections to internal dashboards, administrative panels, or other services that restrict access by IP address. The organization still needs to secure user accounts, devices, and the VPN itself; an IP rule is not a substitute for authentication.

Reducing shared-address reputation friction
Websites sometimes challenge or block traffic when many accounts appear from one address or when another user has abused it. A dedicated address removes the risk of being directly affected by another customer on that same shared IP. It may reduce some login friction or security challenges, but it does not guarantee fewer CAPTCHAs or uninterrupted access.
Does a dedicated IP reduce privacy?
It can reduce one form of anonymity. A shared VPN address blends activity from many customers, making it harder for an outside service to distinguish one subscriber by IP alone. Repeated use of a dedicated address creates a more consistent identifier, and the provider associates that address with your account. A website may therefore find sessions easier to correlate than when you use a busy shared pool.

That does not automatically make a dedicated IP unsafe. Privacy depends on the provider’s account-linking practices, logging and retention, tunnel design, protections against leaks, and your own account and browsing behavior. A provider’s privacy claims cannot be generalized to every VPN or cloud service. Read the provider’s current privacy and logging documentation before treating a dedicated address as a privacy feature.
What a dedicated IP cannot guarantee
- Streaming access: A service may recognize and restrict VPN addresses. ExpressVPN says its dedicated IPs may work less well for streaming and in countries with high internet censorship.
- Banking access: Banks can still require additional verification, block VPN traffic, or apply their own risk rules.
- Fewer CAPTCHAs: A cleaner address may help in some cases, but challenges depend on the site, browser, behavior, and address reputation.
- Permanent availability: A provider may change locations, app support, allocation rules, or account limits.
- Complete anonymity: An exclusive address is easier to associate with one account than a shared address.
Consumer VPN and business offerings are not interchangeable
Consumer VPN add-ons
A VPN provider may sell a dedicated address as an add-on to an individual subscription. Check whether the address is exclusive, which countries or cities are offered, whether it works in every app or protocol, and how reassignment works if you cancel or change plans. Private Internet Access, for example, documents location and account limits for its consumer dedicated-IP option; those terms are provider-specific and can change.

Enterprise cloud egress
Cloud networking products target organizations that need controlled outbound addresses for allowlists and integrations. Cloudflare documents dedicated egress IPs as an Enterprise Zero Trust add-on and notes that some traffic types do not use those egress addresses. Confirm which applications, protocols, and traffic paths are covered before building firewall rules around the service.

- Identify the requirement. If a service explicitly asks for a fixed source address or an IP allowlist, a dedicated or static egress product may be appropriate. If your goal is ordinary VPN privacy, a shared address may be the better fit.
- Check exclusivity. Ask whether the address is reserved for your account or merely selected from a provider pool.
- Verify stability. Look for a written promise that the address remains unchanged, and note exceptions such as cancellation, relocation, or service changes.
- Confirm geography. Make sure the required country or city is available; availability varies by provider and date.
- Test allowlisting compatibility. Confirm that the target firewall or service accepts the address type and that all required traffic uses it.
- Review privacy architecture. Read how the provider links the address to accounts, handles logs, and protects traffic. A dedicated address should not be presented as an anonymity guarantee.
- Check product limits. Review supported apps, protocols, devices, streaming behavior, censorship conditions, account limits, and reassignment rules.
Dedicated IP versus a home ISP address
A home ISP normally assigns an address to your internet connection, subject to the ISP’s dynamic or static-address policy. A dedicated VPN IP is instead the address presented by the VPN provider’s network. A cloud dedicated egress IP belongs to the organization’s cloud networking setup. All three can appear as “your IP” to an external service, but they are controlled by different providers and serve different purposes.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Bottom line for VPN users and businesses
Choose a dedicated IP when a predictable, account-specific source address is more important than the anonymity gained from sharing an address with many users. It is most useful for allowlists and remote business access, and it may avoid reputation problems caused by other customers. Keep expectations narrow: it cannot guarantee access, eliminate verification, or preserve as much user blending as a shared VPN IP.
