To generate daily website screenshots, run a browser capture job on a recurring schedule, use the same page state and capture settings each time, then save each image under a predictable date-based key in storage you control. The screenshot tool handles rendering; a separate scheduler runs the job, and a separate storage policy governs how long archived images remain available.
What a daily screenshot workflow needs
A reliable archive has three distinct parts: a recurring job, a repeatable capture, and a destination that keeps the resulting image. Neither a screenshot API nor a browser library inherently supplies the complete daily scheduling and archival policy.
- Schedule: Choose a recurring scheduler in the runtime where the job will run. Configure its timezone and failure notifications deliberately; exact scheduler setup depends on your platform.
- Render: Open the intended URL or HTML, wait for the content you need, and choose viewport, full-page, or element capture.
- Store: Save the image with a stable site identifier and date, then set archive access and retention rules in the destination.
For example, a key such as pricing-page/2026-09-30.webp makes the site and capture date apparent. This is a useful naming convention, not a requirement of Playwright, Cloudflare, or a storage provider.
Choose what each screenshot should contain
Viewport capture
A viewport capture records what is visible within the selected browser dimensions. Use it when the comparison should show the first screen as a visitor sees it, such as a homepage header or dashboard view. Keep viewport width and height fixed between runs.

Full-page screenshot
A full-page screenshot includes content below the fold. It is useful for recording an entire landing page or article, but long pages can produce tall files and may expose differences caused by lazy-loaded content. Playwright supports full-page capture, and Cloudflare Browser Run’s screenshot endpoint provides a full-page option. Element capture
Capture a specific selector when only one region matters, such as a price panel or status indicator. This can make daily comparisons easier to interpret than comparing an entire page, but the selector must continue to identify the intended element. Playwright supports element screenshots; Cloudflare’s endpoint documents a selector option.
Make daily captures comparable
Changing capture conditions can create image differences even when the website itself has not materially changed. Set the conditions explicitly and keep them stable:
- URL and page state: Use the same URL and account or session state. Personalized content, geolocation, and consent state can change what renders.
- Viewport: Keep width and height fixed. Responsive layouts may otherwise show different arrangements.
- Capture scope: Choose viewport, full page, or a selector and do not switch modes between archive entries.
- Wait condition: Wait for the specific content that matters when possible. A page-load event alone may occur before late-loading images or data appear.
- Timing: Run at a consistent local time if time-sensitive content matters. The scheduler’s timezone and daylight-saving behavior are platform-specific.
- Consent and overlays: Cookie banners, newsletter prompts, and chat widgets can alter screenshots. Decide whether the archive should record them or suppress them, and apply the same policy every run.
These are implementation choices rather than settings that fit every site. Dynamic advertising, rotating promotions, animation, and personalized content can still produce legitimate day-to-day differences.

Playwright can write a screenshot to a file or return image bytes for another system to store. The following Node.js example captures a full page, waits for a page-specific selector, and saves the image to a date-based local path. Install Playwright and its browser in the job’s runtime, then supply a URL and selector that exist on the target site.

}The example uses an ISO date in UTC because toISOString() is UTC-based. If the archive date should follow a local business timezone, derive the key using that timezone intentionally instead of assuming the machine’s local clock. To capture only the visible viewport, omit fullPage: true; for one element, use the locator’s screenshot method after waiting for it to appear. For downstream storage rather than a local file, keep the returned image bytes and pass them to your chosen object store or database client. The destination’s SDK, authentication, key rules, size limits, and lifecycle configuration are specific to that service and should be checked in its current documentation.
Use a hosted screenshot endpoint
Cloudflare Browser Run’s screenshot endpoint accepts a URL or HTML and returns an image. Its documented controls include viewport, full-page capture, waiting, and a target element. This is a request/response path rather than a daily scheduler: your own recurring job still needs to call the endpoint and persist each returned image.
Cloudflare’s getting-started material distinguishes stateless Quick Actions from browser sessions used for scripted browser control, and includes an example that navigates to a URL, captures a screenshot, and stores data in KV. Review Cloudflare Browser Run’s getting-started guide for the current setup and integration details. Confirm separately that the chosen destination fits your archive’s retrieval, capacity, access, and retention needs.
Store, retrieve, and protect the archive
Use a key that makes the subject and date unambiguous. A hierarchical layout such as site-id/YYYY-MM-DD.ext is easy to browse; include a run identifier only if you need to preserve multiple attempts on the same date. Decide whether a retry should overwrite the original day’s image or create a separate key.

- Retention: Choose how long screenshots should be kept, and configure the policy in the archive destination. Do not assume the rendering service controls the lifecycle of a copy you store elsewhere.
- Access: Restrict reads and writes to the people and jobs that need them. Screenshots may contain account data or other sensitive page content.
- Format and size: Choose PNG, JPEG, or another supported format based on legibility, image size, and how you plan to compare files. There is no universally correct format for every page.
- Failure records: Log the date, target, outcome, and error separately from the image archive so a missing image is distinguishable from a successful capture that has not yet been uploaded.
- Comparison: Retrieve images for the same page and capture settings. A visual difference may reflect content changes, personalization, or rendering timing—not necessarily a defect.
Cloudflare’s Browser Run FAQ says content and generated output for Quick Actions (except /crawl), Puppeteer, Playwright, and CDP are processed ephemerally and not retained beyond what is required for rendering. The same FAQ says Quick Actions generated output is cached by default for five seconds, configurable up to one day or disabled. These statements concern Cloudflare’s rendering operations and Quick Actions cache; they do not define retention for a separate archive you create.

The screenshot is blank or missing important content
Check that navigation succeeded and that the page is not showing a bot challenge, error state, or empty shell. Wait for a selector tied to the content you need rather than relying only on a generic navigation event. If data requires authentication, ensure the job has the intended session or credentials without logging secrets into output.
Images or lower-page sections are absent
For a full-page screenshot, verify that full-page mode is enabled and that lazy content has had time to load. Where possible, wait for the relevant image or section selector to become visible before capture. Long or dynamically expanding pages may need a site-specific wait strategy.

Daily images differ unexpectedly
Compare viewport, URL, selector, wait behavior, timezone, and consent handling between runs. Then check for personalized content, rotating campaigns, animations, ads, or changes to the page itself. Keep capture configuration alongside the archive so a later comparison can distinguish a settings change from a site change.
The job runs but no archive file appears
Separate the capture step from the upload step in logs. Confirm the returned file or bytes are non-empty, the destination credentials allow writes, and the key uses a valid path. Record upload failures and use a retry policy appropriate to your runtime rather than silently treating the run as successful.
Two captures overwrite one another
Check whether the scheduler can start another run before the prior one finishes, and whether the key omits a date, timezone, or run identifier. Decide whether same-day retries should replace the day’s canonical image or be stored separately, then encode that rule in the key format.
The archive grows faster than expected
Estimate the number of pages, runs, and average output size for your own workload, then configure lifecycle expiration or deletion in the storage destination. The capture documentation does not establish a universal archive retention duration or storage cost.

Does Playwright schedule a screenshot every day?

Can I use the same workflow for PDFs?
